I'm still reading through all the linked studies but I think this is pretty interesting stuff.

So called vitamin D is not actually a vitamin, it's a hormone which I did not know until today.

I've been wanting to supplement with it for some time but local sources of this hormone are pretty expensive for what you get. I ordered some from the link he suggested since the price is insanely cheap and I'll likely receive it in 2 weeks.

Do you live in an area where you can't get a lot of sunlight?

Sort of. I live in southern Ontario Canada, inside most of the day in an office. Plus there is the possible risk of skin cancer from too much sun. The article is not all about supplementation, but actually talks more about the benefits of getting adequate vit. D in whatever means you can, either through sun or supplementation.

Also, one thing is that as you get older, your skin loses the ability to make vit. D due to the loss of cholesterol in your skin.

Getting D from the sun can take from ten minutes to three hours depending upon just your skin type. If you are naturally darker , it can take up to three hours in direct sun light to get your daily dose of D. Also, D3 is the best form to take.

There are multitudes of people who live in areas with vast amounts of sunlight available and are still deficient in vitamin D when they get their bloodwork back. The sun isn't as effective as people make it out to be.

You need whole body exposure..ie be practically naked to get the most benefit from sunlight. Being clothed in the sun provides next to no benefit.

Very true. I think it's pretty safe to say that most people are deficient in vitamin D. In the last few years we are learning that a level considered deficient may be higher than what we previously thought as well.

one of the most over looked vits/hormones for sure. I started supplementing it about a year ago. I never noticed anythign specific but just let it do whatever it was doing and if nothign then oh well. I always drank/drink alot of milk but not Vit D only Skim.

Which is why people exaggerate the degree to which 'sunlight exposure' helps with vitamin D levels. You have to understand what is entailed when referring to the 'exposure'.

I take the NOW brand 5000 iu's during the winter and sometimes boost my dose to 25,000 iu per day as per the Vitamin D Council's recommendations. I can feel the difference at that dosage range.

For perspective on Vit D from sunlight...one square centimeter of skin can produce 400 iu of D in one hour (depending on skin type, strength of UV etc) which is the current FDA RDA.
