I was wondering what the consensus on this was and if there are any suggestions as to how to supplement it.

I don't know if stats really matter, but 21 6'2" 205 lbs

I try to do 2-4 w/ every meal if I'm getting less than 30g protein in that meal.

i hit up 2-4 every meal, no matter how much protein im already getting per meal.

Always rock 3 a meal. 7 meals aday. I know some guys are up to 6 a meal, and i know some it hurts their stomach. Find how you feel brother.

haha, i used to hit upwards of 5 per meal, then my staff complained about my Gas..... hahahahahaha. now i have toned it back to 4 lol.

This really looks like a great staple. An easy way to get extra, high quality protein, and it isn't EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!

It is a great staple! Get some. Simple enough. I like to take some before bed and in the morning with breakfast for a little kick start.

6 pills x 6 meals per day for me. The bottle lasts about a month, give or take. Some people go more moderate because of stomach pains and rancid gas, but its all subjective.

I've never gotten the gas, but I've heard some people have eliminated the gas from eating high calorie meals with lots of essential fats (i.e. during a bulking phase).

Best,
Chad

Start out low to access your tolerance. Work your way up as you see fit. I went from 2-3 per day and I started to have stomach issues. Everyone is different. See how it feels.

Hate to spoil the love but last year on T-Nation, Christian Thib said:

"Unless I was a diagnosed anameic or a menstruating woman, I wouldn't touch any liver supplement with a 10 foot pole."

If you have never heard of him, he knows his stuff, he has wrote a number of great books and many many articles. I bought some of these and was taking quite a few of them, then came across this and have really cut it back.

Care to elaborate on that post or at least link that article from T-Nation?

yes. please do elaborate on this.

I don't have the knowledge to elaborate. He said it in a Q&A last year. If I remember correctly someone asked if he recommends liver supps and that was his exact response, nothing more nothing less.

I assume it has something to do with Iron?

What are your thoughts on Liver Tablets to aid in getting sufficient daily protein intake?

thanks

Not a good idea... they sre too high in iron for men. While a small daily amount would be fine, ingesting a lot of them could lead to problems down the road.

another poster asks about uni liver...
Good question. What about Universals Uniliver Tabs?I use them during workouts. Is the Iron mentioned bad? (Uni-Liver ? is a rich source of heme iron)

to which he responds...

Unless I was a diagnosed anameic or a menstruating woman, I wouldn't touch any liver supplement with a 10 foot pole.

so his argument is that too much iron is bad for men...

According to the office of dietary supplements:
the suggested intake of iron per day for an average male is 8mg but the tolerable upper level is 45mg....

soo now the question is.... how much iron is in a tab or Uni liver?

Here is another paragraph supporting Thib's argument...
Who should be cautious about taking iron supplements?
Iron deficiency is uncommon among adult men and postmenopausal women. These individuals should only take iron supplements when prescribed by a physician because of their greater risk of iron overload. Iron overload is a condition in which excess iron is found in the blood and stored in organs such as the liver and heart. Iron overload is associated with several genetic diseases including hemochromatosis, which affects approximately 1 in 250 individuals of northern European descent [67]. Individuals with hemochromatosis absorb iron very efficiently, which can result in a build up of excess iron and can cause organ damage such as cirrhosis of the liver and heart failure [1,3,67-69]. Hemochromatosis is often not diagnosed until excess iron stores have damaged an organ. Iron supplementation may accelerate the effects of hemochromatosis, an important reason why adult men and postmenopausal women who are not iron deficient should avoid iron supplements. Individuals with blood disorders that require frequent blood transfusions are also at risk of iron overload and are usually advised to avoid iron supplements.

but... Uni liver isn't an iron supplement... sooo.....

The iron in Uni-Liver tabs is Heme Iron fellas. NOT the same stuff that is being discussed in articles where they talk about an excessive iron intake for men. Couple that with the fact that all of your best known body builders over the years used them and swear by them and even after retirement will still tell you they are gold to the body builder. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Dave Drapper, there is a list as long as this continent. Not much to worry about here in the way of this topic.

Also a common misconception or over sight is this: when looking at dietary needs vs the RDA of anything the fact is that a body builder/power lifter/athlete is going to use, burn and need more than what has been set up on the baseline. In fact, in some cases, so much so that it may be hard to believe but just looking at the caloric needs of a body builder vs that of the average man should give you a basic understanding of this.

The point is that bodybuilders are burning up a lot more of what we put into our bodies than the average person and if you couple that with the fact that Heme is used by the body as needed with any excess being discarded then you can see where the error in thinking is here.

3 to 4 decades of well accomplished body builders can't be wrong about something they have proven over and over again to work fellas.

My personal advice is to not worry about it but if it concerns you, do further research until you are comfortable or avoid use of any such product. In this later case however, you are going to want to reassess many of the sports supplements you take right down to your daily multi. There are plenty of things more than just iron to consider.

The average couch potato would be advised to use caution in this case. The guy in the gym throwing his guts out trying to build muscle mass needs much more nutrient base to cover his needs and provide for growth.

I don't want to offend, but I myself am going to go with the advice of people like Arnold, Dave, Frank, Dorian, etc... vs the advice of the author mentioned above who I have never heard of.

This is just how I think. So far, it's been working very well for me. I've never been healthier, stronger or more muscular than I have been since I started doing all this and I used Uni-Liver tabs, 4 with every meal, every day of my life.

I hope I've helped calm some of the concerns posted in here but if not, I encourage anyone looking for more information to research "both" sides of any fence you are straddling before making a decision so that your decision can be a quality one.

Thanks for the response! I wrote to Thib to see if he wanted to clarify what he said, I will write if he responds. In the meantime I think I might pop a few more than usual today. :)

Anyone with gout have issues taking this? I have to avoid foods high in Purines and Liver is near the top of the list. This does intrigue me though. Are the pills pretty big?

They are about the size of Adam tabs.

Nice post Hg. Very informative - i've been using uniliver for well over a year now. Will always be a staple in my arsenal regardless of whether i'm bulking or cutting.

Uni-Liver is...liver.I'd stay away if you have gout.

A great thing for Gout is Celery.Celery also has a good amount of vitamins/minerals and can lower blood pressure.

Uni-Liver is good stuff though.I like to take it in between meals for a protein boost.I usually take 4 pills 3 times a day.
