Are We All Crazy?

Guys,

Trying to keep and build up muscle is part of my psyche and I'll be doing it until the day I die. But sometimes I have wondered if we're not all a little crazy? This link really got me to thinking:

A lot of my weight lifting friends have struggled with health issues. Of course, it's hard to know whether or not it was due to the bodybuilding lifestyle or not.

But, anyway, I'd like to get your feedback as to whether or not you think us testosterone-males tend to go to extremes and this might cause us issues? Have any of you backed off a little for your long term health for example?
 
I am 6 ft 215 and am only 215 because my metabolism is still much too slow. My ideal weight would be 205, dropping down to 195 and maybe less as I get older.

I think anyone 6 ft who weighs 220 or more looks like a frog.....I want no part of that....sorry bodybuilders.

Maybe I misunderstand, but - at least in the context of this forum - I think restoring hormones to healthy, physiologic levels is the safest thing you can do. I'm no doctor, but I read enough studies about how low testosterone can eat a man alive. I mean seriously, how many disorders are no linked to low T? It grows by the day.

Personally, I was overweight, lethargic (profoundly), depressed, middling sex drive and TRT gave me back a life. It didn't make me a manic, crazed monster, but it restored my mental outlook (where myriad antidepressants failed), my physical composition (along with diet and exercise I lost 60+ pounds), dropped my cholesterol levels to where I no longer need a statin drug (with some help from fish oil Dr. Crisler recommended, which dropped my 400 something triglycerides down to 116).

Secondarily, it made me more aware of my health and living a healthy lifestyle and changed my perspective on my mortality. Before I had any structure, I felt as though no matter what I did I could not lose (much) weight or stay in shape. Now, I feel much more in control of my health and I take responsibility for it.
 
sometimes my mom gives me the talk about eating holistically or whatever.

lots of natural food that grow from the earth. With small amounts of meat and dairy. I think for general longevity and health this type of eating is better.

I also dont believe in 1g per lb of weight for protein. I knew so many dudes in high school that were jacked from the weight room and football. The only protein they got is what anyone would get from a typical diet. Most of their diet was fat and carbs, with half of those carbs probably coming from sodas....they never made an effort to eat extra protein. I think total calories is more important than total protein, as long as there is adeqate protein with each meal you would probably be fine.
 
usrda is .6g/kg, I think that most bodybuilders would do fine (without anabolics) in the range of .6-.8g/lb a day, remainder from carbs/fat
 
its not a question but a certainty! i am crazy and proud of it! i lift for me and though i am not the biggest guy at the gym i plan on it! i don't train for chicks, that horseshit. i think that was written by jealous critic. the medical blah blah was too generalized imo.

his last paragraph saved me from holding a grudge!

so lets say a 170lb guy should eat 140 grams a day. What percent of those grams have to come from whole sources (meat,dairy,milk).

lets say the person rarely eats beans and nuts....
 
So, according to this... naturally high IGF-1 = prostate cancer? So we all should want low growth hormone??

I totally agree with getting T (and other hormones) to youthful levels!

I've put on pretty good muscle in this range. don't know everyone else's experience of course...

What exactly do you mean by "us testosterone males"?

I'm not a weightlifter myself. I prefer endurance sports (running, cycling, rowing) that get me outdoors, maybe in part because I live on the left coast in an area with generally nice weather year round.

I work with a fellow about my age who was a major gym rat in college. He describes himself at that time as "freakishly strong". He didn't play football, but across the board he was stronger than anyone on his college football team at the time - - - and he went to a school with a very good football team. He stopped lifting after college, and now he's just a normal, healthy looking guy with joint pain and stretch marks. Come to think of it, I've never seen him wear a short sleeve shirt. He says the main benefits he realized from lifting were (1) easy acceptance into his fraternity because most of the members were gym rats and (2) getting a job as a bouncer in college and grad school.

Like most things in life, lifting weights should be done in moderation. The human body has design limits. Push yourself too close to those limits, and things tend to wear out faster or even break. Think of yourself as a truck. Will the truck last longer driving around empty, or towing a 1500 lb trailer? Of course the trailer will put a lot more wear and tear on the truck, although the extra wear and tear might not be noticeable until higher mileage is attained.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think either. He kind of goes back and forth. For example, on this thread he tells you how to raise your testosterone through diet

well, the more from whole sources the better, but if not from whole sources, i'd recommend that it be from milk concentrate/isolate or one of the caseins, not just whey. Its not too hard (other than potentially $ wise) to hit 140g though. a 4 egg white only omelete in the morning with a glass of milk, some low sodium beef jerky as a snack, full can of tuna for lunch, 4-6oz serving of chicken/fish beef for dinner, and some cottage cheese in the evening.

That is a good analogy. Those that have had high-mileage vehicles have probably also noticed that they run better when they are a daily driver. Things start going wrong when they sit.
 
The main thing is restoring hormones to normal levels. For me personally i dont even know what youthful levels feel like. Im 20 with low igf-1 and T.

I have used testosterone once in the past and that was probably the best i have ever felt... increased sex drive, more energy, more motivation to do things, better well-being, bettter concentration, less brain fog, increased aggressiveness (good thing), more strength, more muscle.

I plan to be on it permanently once i get my heavy metal issues sorted.

I dont think we're crazy but we are aiming for a ideal that we percieve as "looking good" when its actually quite difficult to achieve in terms of bodybuilding. Some people lose it and just focus on bodybuilding and throw the rest of their lives away but the important thing is to keep balance between all your daily activities and goals and friends/family.

My ideal bodytype would have to be a dexter jackson type physique - thick and shredded.
