You are correct - it could work out that way. However, there are a few natural safeguards built in there.
1. People have to do a bit of legwork to get the rebate. They have to have their original receipt and return it to the store or e-retailer. Scammers usually don't want to do the work.
2. If they don't have the product to begin with, they can't do anything to prove it.
3. eBay is NOT an AX authorized retailer, so that eliminates turning a profit that way. That, and we know who the winners of contests are. No freebies then rebates.
4. When someone contacts customer service via the "contact us" link on our site, the e-mail gets sent to a very cunning yet caring individual who will go to great lengths to analyze their cycle, training, diet and anything else related to product usage before sending them off to rebate land. Oh, and that sly devil is me.
So yes, you can get around it. But would you really want to? The guarantee is completely legit, and AX will gladly uphold it. However, I honestly don't remember a time when we've had to do it - atleast through any of the contacts I've made. We win a LOT more folks than we ever lose. And should they ever get to that final "step" above, I have yet to see one person, no matter how adamant about AX's supposed "failure" for them, who has not turned around and said "ok, I guess I did screw up. I'll have to try this again and do it right next time."
That, my friends, is the value of having a strong online team.
