MMA and supplements: My recommendations

I've tried Geranium with caffeine, but I have not tried Core ZAP. I would use a lower dose of Ephedrine without any stim just to promote bronchodialation.

In high school I took sudafed before hockey games. I also experimented with vick's vapor rub. Helped me breathe a little better.

I was wondering Rodja, do you use any multi's? I figured it would have been part of your staples. I use now foods ADAM, was wondering of throwing a second multi in as well....Orange Triad. I double dose my multi, but figure just to add Triad because of its additional benefits.

And lastly it looks like i'm kinally gonna get to see what MMA is all about first-hand. The town an hour away is holding amateur fights. The loser even gets paid, not that i'd lose. haha

Technically, that's not an ammy fight. Once a purse is involved, it becomes professional and you might get in a lot of sh!t if caught doing this.

Back to the question, though; I seldom use a multi-vitamin anymore, but Poseidon takes care of 2 key minerals: zinc and magnesium. Plus it gives a ton of the B's, Vit C, and potassium.

True, i guess if you don't belong to a fight league your an amateur to the fight organizers there.

Thnx for the response

i have been training for some time now. your list of sups looks very similar to mine.

i made a home brew batch of extend, 7 parts bcaa and 2 parts Citrulline malate. i take about 20 mgs of that preworkout.

i have also been taking 8 grams of beta alanine a day. this seems to make the most difference in performance/cardio

eco green multi vitamin by NOW. it doesnt have ZMA like their Adam multi which pisses me off cause i like to take ZMA to help me get to sleep.

of course protein powders

creatine. however this might have to change once i have to start cutting to make weight

fish oil

2 different joint complexes. one contains celedrin and MSM. this stuff is a freaking dream. i thank god for it. and another one with glucosamine and chondritin.

our lists are very similar. i wish i could have afforded this stuff when i wrestled in school. i am sure it would have helped me big time.

I'm taking Body Octane now, works great! i'm seriously poor, so I'm just take a scoop pre-workout 3 times a week. Stingy bastage i am. :D

what have you experienced with the body octane? the stuff interests me. i too am i stingy bastard and that is why i am asking you what your thoughts are instead of just buying it and trying it myself.

rodja, sweet writeup, question tho... do u do any sort of weights training? whether on a seperate day to training or not.. or you just do mma training?? and if so, the main thing im interested in is if u use that RPM as pre-workout for weights training as well as mma training?? and have u tried any other pre-workout supp that u reckon was just as good or better in certain aspects?? as in like cardio or strength or strength endurance

It feels like my heart is going to explode, I can't get enough air, and like I'm working very close to my VO2 max for an extended period. Like I was in someone elses body. Ugh.

poison, wouldn't that breathlessness feeling be a bit of anxiety?

I have had that feeling before and it is usually associated with too much stimulation from what i've taken. It's not a nice feeling at all and it really affected my training.

I actually got it a bit when i cut out stims and started my current stack of Rhodiola, L-Tyrosine and Green Tea Extract. I did some further research into Rhodiola and some sites recommend that those prone to anxiety should not use it.

I persisted though and a cuppla days later i was fine with it.

Now i absolutely love it.

I was going to add Citrulline and Beta-Alanine to this. Any problems with taking all these together an hour or so before a workout? Empty stomach of course.

Hmm, Rhodiola certainly reduces anxiety for me, and most other people. However, I believe if you take too much it can have the opposite effect.

Yep. 400-600mg of rhodiola gives me that chill feeling, but when I go over that consistently, I get sleeplessness.

Increased endurance, decreased 'perceived' exertion, shorter recovery time, less DOMS. That's on one scoop daily.

Yes it does with me now to. I've been using it for a few weeks and my wife has noticed a big increase in mood and i've noticed consistant energy levels that last all day.

I use the NOW Foods brand 500mg and have it around 4:00 or 5:00am. I'm still in awe at how 1 tiny capsule can have the effect it does and it gets better the longer i take it. I'm not even intereseted in adding a second dose so at that low price it is very cost effective.

Rodja, which brand are you using?

I just get the bulk standardized to 3% rosavins.

i have a question... has anyone been training while on cycle or fought while on cycle? whether its a AM or Smoker fight?

Maybe..only done a VO2 max test once and my #s 69 ml/kg/min. I don't get tired too easily so I love the feeling of getting there.

But you're right. I wouldn't want to stay up there too long. Just enough to get me started hehehe.

It's a completely different feeling than reaching your VO2max and having to deal with the nastiness of Y-HCl. I have hit my MHR on several occasions and did not feel nearly as affected as I have going for a normal run with about 5mg of Y-HCl.

When I'm lifting weights I take a ton of supplements but if training for a fight I never do. I only take multivitamins, Vitamin C, 15g of BCAAs and 8g glutamine a day (my cheap version of an Animal Pak lol..) and maybe 1g/lb. of protein.

It's hard to trust supplements when your brain's on the line..I loaded up on ECA once before a fight and I almost passed out after because I didn't realize how drained I was.

I tried a Leviathan reloaded sample pack about a year ago and had the same bad stim effect. I just bought some and redusced the doseage to half but more frequently. I have to say it made a huge difference. I t gives a smooth focused feeling and I have more energy than before. I was skeptical but now Im hooked. I love RPM as well. Great job Rodja. Kick some ass and let me know when and where your fighting. I'll check out one of your bouts. Im in Austin. Good luck bro.

Great write up!!! I currently take Xtend by scivation just during my workouts and trainning sessions I t has BCAA in it and what not.. I try and not take PWO shakes and try and get some brown rice in chicken or something similar.

I have been doing HIIT along with some wrestling type drills and suicides and my mat endurance had improved somewhat.. really tryna to focus on loosing weight and gaining strength.

Anything you can suggest for strength gains and weight loss will being an athlethe? A friend suggested to take hemadrol and Propadrol but wasnt sure how it was gonna effect me. Any suggestions?

Accomplishing that goal is 100% diet and training. The best supplements for that would be Xtend, AP, Activate Xtreme, and, if you can handle it, Arachidonic Acid. The AA will exacerbate any acute inflammation you may encounter, but it is a hell of supplement for a recomp. As I wrote in the write-up, do not use this during a contest/competition prep because it will do more harm than good.

can you forsee any negative side effects from using the hemadrol and Propadrol for a cycle being I try and stay so active? Reason I ask because I have heard alot of pills like this can make your joints hurt or body tight and so on... would taking these affect my performance?

Thanks for the info on AP, Activate Xtreme, and Arachidonic Acid... all new to me so ima google them and read a bit about them..

thanks for the advice!

I am not a huge fan of using any AAS without a solid supplement base. In fact, I highly recommend against it. If you did not know that these where AAS, then do not touch them (or if you don't know what AAS stands for).

honestly I dont kno what AAS stands for but I did some reading on them when my friend was hyping them up to me... some sort of pro hormone and i read through forums where people debated back in forth if it was a steroid or not..majority of the ppl in that forum said it is a hormone that encourages the production of steroids by the body... but by no means do I claim I kno thats why I ask questions. My main concern was the side effects... I eat pretty healthy and take supplements but not the supp base you are reffering to

nice writeup...

I was curious about your AA comment... why is it exactly you do not recommend using during competition? It makes you feel pain more, or recovery from injury slowly?

It stands for 'Anabolic Androgenic Steroid' and yes, i believe those are AAS. I would do some heavy research first and keep in mind they may show up on a test if that is a concern for you... good luck bro

AA is a pro-inflammatory. Don't think I need to explain why that is a bad thing while prepping for a fight.

Judojosh: For me when I'm "off" season (Ie. not training/sparring etc; just bodybuilding.) I take Anything and Everything like AAS, PH, etc.

When I'm training I never take anything except for BCAAs, glutamine and now NO. Only the proven stuff for athletic performance. So I would recommend you stick to the basics and avoid the AAS for now. You can always bulk up/buff up etc. later when you're not in competition.

NO is far from proven as is glutamine.

I disagree. Both of them have been disproven. Both have also been proven to do what they say. I would not consider glutamine to be a very "proven" supplement.
That didn't make any sense. You disagree, yet say they have been disproven (which is what I said).

Hey Rodja would you reccomend Poseidon over gatorade/pedialyte after cutting weight?
Yes, not only does it have the electrolytes that you need, but it also helps to replace the minerals lost during depletion.

Rodja, have you tried Cre02 yet? It has creatine, cordyceps, ALA, and rhodiola, along with other great stuff, and so far has been the best supplement for ragged edge performance out of anything I've tried, including Body Octane, beta alanine, straight cordyceps, etc. Awesome stuff!

Haven't tried it and probably won't. Not a huge fan of creatine for MMA and the other supps are slightly under-dosed.

It looks that way, but the enteric coating must work. Also, it's not a ton of creatine, so the negative effects might not be there for you. It's the strongest, best endurance enhancer I've ever used. You could get a free sample:

I have gotten quite a few PMs regarding this and with the ever growing expansion of people training, I figured it was time to make something like this. I hope to clear out a lot of the bad advice that many MMAers receive as far as supplementation is concerned and to understand general do's and don'ts

I will divide this into 4 sections: staples, highly recommended, and peaking (amount in parentheses is my dosing).

Staples

These are the supplements that I take year round and are invaluable tools for recovery, strength, and cardio.

BCAAs-help to slow muscle catabolism from training or increase LBM if attempting to add some weight to your frame (20g).
Poseidon-this is for hydration and electrolyte balance. I could honestly go on for pages about how important this is to overall performance and it is a must after cutting weight to replenish (3-4 servings).
Whey Protein-helps for quick replenishment after training or to add LBM (40g post weights)
SuperCarb-slow digesting carb source that I add to my BCAA and Poseidon drink to avoid hypoglycemia and to add extra calories into my diet (25g)
Anabolic Pump-this is one of the greatest nutrient repartitioners I have ever used and is a vital tool for those are heavy for their weight class. This also helps out with recovery and strength gains due to it's ability to maximize glycogen storage within the muscle (3 caps).
Fish Oil-EFA source and anti-inflammatory are amongst the myriad of fish oil uses (6-10g/day).
Beta Alanine-lactic acid buffer to help push through those painful moments and maintain strength in the later rounds (6-8g/day).

Highly Recommended

These are supplements that I find to be great tools if your budget permits them. Not quite important enough to be a "staple," but I prefer to have them in my arsenal most of the time.

RPM-best pre-WO stim I have ever used. A clean energy without the crash and also adds a little more aggression into the system (3 caps).
Protein Blends (e.g. egg/casein/whey together)-I always have some sort of blend lying around if I am pinched for time or don't quite feel like eating a full meal. Helps to add sufficient protein and calories for the MMAer (40g per meal).
P-Slin-this is for pre-WO nutrient repartitioning. Similar in AP to it's action, but shorter-acting. Helps to utilize the pre-WO meal to the max and provides great energy during the long hours in the gym (1 cap ~20 minutes til pre-WO meal/90 minutes pre-training).

Peaking

These are the supplements I like to add 4-6 weeks prior to competition. These range from ergogenic aids to mood enhancement to sleep aids.

HEAT-great supplement for those that have to diet to make their weight. Great appetite suppressant and also helps with mood during those periods of carb-depleted crankiness (3+6 caps/day).
Ecdysterone-this helps out with VO2 and EPO production. For those that don't wtf that means, basically this is a great supplement for cardio (500mg active/day).
Rhodiola-mood enhancement, sleep aid, and helps with cardio. It's also very, very cheap (300-400mg @ 3% rosavins/day).
Activate Extreme-outside of the nutrient repartitioning, sleep aid, and strength gains, this supplement gives me the best, or worst, aggression. This combined with RPM makes me want to really, really hurt people (6 caps/day).
Drive-reduces BF, increases cardio and aggression, and great mood enhancer...enough said (6 caps, 5x/wk).

Avoid

These are supplements that I would avoid or minimize for various reasons.

Yohimbine HCl-BP and cardio killer
Clenbuterol-same reasons as Y-HCl
Arachidonic Acid-don't get me wrong, I love this supplement, but when gearing up for a fight, it does more damage (literally) than good; save this for periods when you have 3 months between fights or DC use ~5 weeks prior to event

That is my list, but remember, without a solid diet, these will not matter. Train hard my friends.

Would you take the supplements listed under peaking on the day of the fight?

Yes, but they should be taken a few weeks prior.

You mean to start taking them a few weeks prior? For example Drive/RPM/Activate extreme combo starting 6 weeks out and continuing all the way up until fight day?

Yes, most NHA supplements take some time to "build-up" within the system to have maximum efficacy.
