Emergency Room- will they perform varicocele surgery at the hospital?

You know, I just don't understand the me, me, me mentality. Do your nuts hurt? sure, no doubt, does that make you an emergency situation? no.

Hell while I was in germany, I had two visits to the ER. One was ordered cause I broke my hand on some dudes face... I was in some bad pain, but still had to wait in the ER for awhile. Another time I went there because I started pissing blood. Guess what... I had to wait. But I guess I didn't complain because the guys they were wheeling in with their leg blown off, in my mind, took priority over my non life threatening pain.

Doctors have to make a judgement call... ESPECIALLY in the ER. If you are capable of going home, or even an urgent care center, then they need to send you on your way. This is because there are probably people behind that curtain that needs real emergency care. It's not because they don't care, but there are never enough doctors to take care of so many people. If you want to change the way things are, quit b!tching, and become a doc... or nurse... or SOMETHING to contribute.

All in all, if your nuts hurt, I sympathize, I really do. But you are not the only person on this earth, ER is a triage environment, and you just are not in that situation. The definition of Emergency in medical terms is "Loss of Life, Limb, or eyesight."

Well said D.

I have a link that explains the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment And Active Labor Act) guidelines for those people here that have never heard of it. This Act addresses the specific responsibility of an emergency room when a patient presents with a medical complaint.

Every hospital IS required to medically screen that patient for A MEDICAL EMERGENCY, and it NEEDS to be treated if deemed so immediately. If the complaint is found to be of a non-emergent nature, they wait like everybody else. This is where triage takes over sorting out the acuity levels of the current patients present, and they are treated accordingly with this 5 Tier Triage System.

There are many private hospitals now that will perform the primary medical screen(which covers them under emtala), but if your complaint is deemed non-urgent (Or NOT and emergency and can wait) you have to pay up front to be treated. If not, they won't see you in the E.R.

You could be the first person to sign in to the E.R., but if people are continuously coming in that are of a higher acuity complaint/condition.....you'll continue to wait. Most hospital triage areas now have the definition of triage written on the sign in sheets, and posted in the triage area.. This was due to many people treating the emergency room like a drive through mcdonalds.

In a nutshell, E.R.'s are not first come/first served. They are worst case/first served. Even if I bring you to the E.R. in an ambulance because you called 911 for your swollen/painful nuts...you're still waiting in triage for the more severe patients to be seen first. You're condition is NOT one that was diagnosed as a true emergency (perhaps it was to you, but not in the grand scheme of all the other patients in the E.R.) The treatment for your condition is not one that would be given in the E.R. or require admission. Hence, your referral to a urologist. Perhaps they could have given you something a little stronger for pain, but frankly, repeated visits for the same problem is a behavior associated with drug seekers which could explain why they didn't. (I am in no way implying you are a drug seeker)

To be brutally honest, there is not much more annoying to an E.R. doc/nurse/tech firefighter/paramedic than someone who comes to an E.R. or calls 911 with a complaint of having pain for an extended period of time. (days or weeks) The E.R./911 system is for acute onset of emergency situations. Your situation would be more suited to an urgent care or minor emergency care center. Either way, you would still be referred to a urologist. I certainly sympathize with your pain and discomfort. My advice to you is to find a urologist more sympathetic to your condition. You as a patient have a right to find a practitioner that you feel comfortable with. You are the customer in this situation not the urologist.

That's all I have on this one. I certainly hope it was not offensive in any way.

I think that was very well stated J! :D

for most men a injury to the tesicle which may result in sexual dysunction is on par with a loss of life and truthfully I would rather lose an arm then go through what I am going through between this varicocle and these other problems

And in medical terms an injury to the tesisticle may result in loss of life of the man can no longer produce sperm of function sexuall

You're clearly generalizing "testicluar pain" as an emergency. Sorry, but it isn't true in the majority of cases. Not all issues of that nature are an EMERGENCY by any means what-so-ever. Could it be? Absolutely, testicular torsion being an emergency, however that's why there is a MEDICAL SCREENING.

QFT!

Not much useful, objective info being given here.... and nearly any quality info that is being given is laced with insults and an arrogant attitude. Just because someone is asking a question on a web forum and not in an hospital room does not mean you should proceed to excessively berate them. He's not a healthcare professional, but you are, so act like one.

You're directing this at who exactly?

He said "health care professional".

I'm seriously done with the bickering in this thread. We'll all just have to agree to disagree on certain points that have been made. This thread has wandered way too far off the beaten path....

Uptempo, i sincerely hope that you are able to find a urologist that is able to give you effective medical management in your eyes, as well as peace of mind.
