Jas's Strongman Training log

Thurs.

BW-221.2

DL from 4'' box:
405-3
455-2

good mornings:
185-10

pullups
wide grip - 19
narrow - 11

My hands still messed up so I didn't push too hard in terms of volume.

Sunday - Big Day!

It was too wet outdoors and there wasn't a schedualed strongman workout so I messsed around with the axle.

BW-221.8

2'' axle clean and press - (continental cleans)
272-1 P-R
292-1 P-R
302-1 P-R
312-failed on clean transition from on belt to shoulders

2'' axle press - assisted cleans
311-1 P-R
321-1 P-R
331-1 P-R

Double overhand DL with axle
331-1
346-lost it at top

This was my first time with continental cleans, and it went pretty well. I switched from a double overhand pull to the belly to an over-under grip at 302.

Tuesday

BW-220.2

Squat - belt+knee wraps
475-3 P-R

-box squats are helping a lot.

front squats - max speed at top
225-3
275-3

GHRs - 24, 12

Wed.

Standing Military
225-2 miss on third

Incline - pause on chest
265-3
285-3
305-1+1 forced

Standing military rack lockouts from nose height
225-2
235-0

That's weird that you can lift the same amount from clavicle level and from nose level. I would think you would be able to do a decent bit more. You don't really do a lot of volume, why?

I think my sticking point is right around nose level, but also I was more tired by then. I've felt for a while that the low volume, high intensity approach is best for me. I've been making solid gains with it so it seems to work. A lot of it's due to being a little beat up and not wanting to push it too hard on my lower back. I also like to be pretty recovered by Sunday's strongman workouts.

That makes sense. I can never decide what works best for me. I'm a confused individual. Was Schoondog a one time thing?

The date is set for NAS nationals, 9/13 in Provo, Utah. It's a two affair with the first day qualifying you if you are in the top 10 in your weight class. The events aren't set yet.

Thursday

DL
550-0 got stuck a few inches below the knee and I didn't try to fight it out - not sure what would have happened
495-3

Stiff legged DL from about 3'' box
405-6

Some upper back and core work with machines

Strongman stuff

BW-220

12 tire flips with 800# tire - 67s
6 tire flips with 800# tire - 25s

Log press on 8'' log
275-1
305-0 very close but crashed hard

I need to start doing some reps and stop trying for this.

farmers walk with 230 per hand - 120 ft
timed run of 120 ft - 26s

Atlas stones - 52'' platform
series 1 - 230, 265, 290, 330 fail (stuffed on the very ledge of the platform - failed on 2 retries)
series 2 - 330

Fun day but I was disappointed with my log performance.

Tuesday

BW-221.7

Box Squat (14.75'') with pause on box (belt + wraps)-
365-3
405-3
425-3 but spotter touched me on the third (not sure I would have made it)

Squat (very lightly wrapped knees since my right one is very sore from log pressing)
225-25 non-stop

heart attack - 1 rep

GHRs - 23, 13

I wasn't really sure what has been beating my right knee up for the last 6 months or so, but it's definitely push jerks. Catching the weight while dipping down seems to put incredible strain on my knees. I've ordered some Rehband knee sleeves to wear for these and hopefully that will help. If not I may have to go back to push pressing.

Wed.

BW-221.2

Standing military-
225-2 (fail on third)

rack standing mil press from forehead height
245-2
260-0

Paused incline press
275-2
300-2 (fail on 3)

dips - 38 PR

:goodpost:

BTW, I tried to make my avatar of that SSE guy Ross, but I couldn't get the file type to work.

Thurs.

BW-221.5

DL
505-3 P R
515-2

Good mornings
185-5
205-5
225-5

Pullups
BW+45 - 5
BW+90 - 1 + half rep + almost a zero rep (weak)
BW-15

My right hand is still hurting so I used straps on everything. My upper back seems to be a little weaker so I'll make sure to do rows more. Maybe this has hurt my overhead strength too.

Sat. - Strongman

axle clean and press
244 - fail on continental clean x 2
244 - 1 (power clean)
254 - 4 (1 power clean)
274 - Very close power clean but fail x 2 and fail on continental x 1
208 - 10

We were outside this week on grass which may have hurt my cleans a little but I don't what happened to me on those continentals after doing 302 a few weeks ago.

220 keg loads
-a few singles then a set of 5.

540 tire flips
8-24.7
15-1:07
8-22.2

I was expecting to smoke this tire after doing the 800 but forgot that grip is a little more iffy on this. I did pretty poorly on my 15 flips.

Sled pull with 226 for 80 ft.

Monday

BW-219.5

Squat (belt + knee wraps)-
485-3 P-R

Rack Squats (just above belly button with belt + knee sleeves)

585-1 P-R from this height
605-0

Squats
255-20 - need more weight this was a little too light

GHRs - 25 (time to start adding weight beyond BW)

Been busy tonight and slightly retarded. Yeah there aren't any that I know of at IM. Maybe I'll try them at bumper plate central sometime this summer but my squats have been going up steadily so I'd like to keep my current program up.

I never left - rather, I was lurking in the shadows like Alex waiting to pounce on whatever unassuming victim sees him the next time he leaves the house.

On a side note, I modified the 'ish' out of a DC routine and it has been working phenomenal for strength. I dropped DLs for the time being, but will reintegrate them soon. You absolutely smash me on pressing movements. My best standing military is 185 x 3, not even close.

Actually, that's very good on SM unless you gained a ton of weight. What do you weigh now? 175ish? A triple over BW is awesome. Good work.

Yeah, Alex is a creepy fvck. I could see him being some sort of weird stalker, capturing unsuspecting victims and forcing terrible jokes upon them.

Do you have any recommendations for strength building supplements (nonhormonal, of course)?

Honestly, I think our best product for strength might be ReCreate? I know it's a fat-burner, but it's out performed P-Slin for me in that department, which is hard to do. I have heard good things about Get Diesel's products. Though, I must say, good ol' Creatine is fan-diddly-dastic.

If I send one of you (Alex or Jas) a care pack (mostly for Alex, though) will you ship it to the other? That way I only have to spend so much $.

On the SM, I'm the exact same weight. I struggle with my lift off, as I'm doing a top-clean-and-jerk motion to get it off. Not sure if that's the right way? I do one working set per exercise, and the days look like this:

Day A - Chest/Should/Tri/Back

(eg.)

Incline BB
Decline BB (drop set)
Standing Military
EZ-Bar Overhead Extension
EZ Bar Row (drop set)
EZ Bar Shrug.

So both back and chest have more sets than they're supposed to, and I also implement drop sets. My bench has gone 20+, so I'm liking it.

Then the leg/bi day is primarily for Bis, with one huge movement like Squats, or Front Squats. I got a clean, clean, and loooow 215 front squat. My ass literally touches the heels so I'm proud.

WTF, you still haven't sent my pack. You told me you sent it 5 times now over the course of 4 months. Now you're gonna send this fag supps, perfect.

Monday

Squat - belt + wraps
495-1

515-1

530-0 should have gotten this one

530-0 tore something at bottom although it seems minor

Thanks to Poly for recording.

Do you think that the uneven spotting on the sides had something to do with it?

Edit: n/m, I hear you scream in pain before the bar goes down.

Had nothing to do with the spot. It seemed to tear right at the bottom, maybe even started on the deceleration of the descent. I might been subconsciously trying to shift a little of the stress off of my right knee which is bad, placing too much strain on the left. Oh well it will heal up soon from the feel of it.
