Gas - $4.00/gal - What Day?

$4.00 national average right? I am pretty sure that in some places gas has already broken the $4 mark, at least temporarily.
I voted for July 4th, if gas is going to be $4 a gallon it would most likely be during the mid summer.
Perhaps though the oil speculators will back off a bit on the news of poor consumer confidence, add that to the fact that people have cut back their driving a bit and hopefully prices will fall.

My guess is late June/early July for the national average.
As mentioned some parts are already there - if not close.
But - that could come sooner if the dollar continues to weaken and people pour money into commodities (crude/mogas).
Or later if the dollar strengthens relative to the Euro.
The summer blends for gasoline will be required shortly - refineries are gearing up to lower RVP (Reid Vapor Pressure) blends. This means a smaller mogas pool - because you can't blend something like butane (too high of an RVP for summer).

I voted by September, but I believe it'll be more around the beginning/middle of August as that will be the peak of summer traveling. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see it hit 4.50/gal in the more expensive states this summer.

I don't think people don't care, I think people don't understand. They think of it as a big credit card balance. They don't realize that within the next decade or two foreign countries like China will own more of America, than Americans will. Because its other countries, and large financial institutions that the gov't borrows from.

Yeah the price of gas is definitely a sensitive subject for me to discuss...I'm currently looking into a 35+mpg CAR and still in college so not like I can go out and get a Hybrid for maximum fuel efficiency...

The government already does seriously tax cigarettes and gasoline, both the fed and state. If I am not mistaken we already pay 60 cents on a gallon federal tax on gas.
Here is a better idea.
You want to cut the deficit? How about the government stop spending so much of my ****ing tax money?

What I hate about how the price of gas fluctuates is that if the barrel price increases gas prices go up that same day...if the price per barrel decreases (like it did the other day by $10 dollars I believe)...it takes a day or two for it to drop...(which was 1 cent in my area...)

gas only goes up about 10cents and at around 3.50 now so itll be late this year.

Yup, it's outrageous. I wonder how many billions the oil companies made this past quarter. I bet it exceeds last years. Probably 15 billion.
$4/gallon or close to it by memorial day would be no surprise. It's already over $4.50/gallon for diesel so it's only $100 to fill up my truck which subsequentally I'm not driving as a result.

I'm paying $3.25 a gallon right now. And that's at SAM's where there is a discount for members. The average here for non-discount pumps is $3.35R / $4D.
Thankfully, I am pretty close to the major area's that I travel in town. I live 1 mile in toward the country in a private community, but the Expressway is close.
I think they should raise the cost for things like smokes to combat high fuel cost, then pay the oil companies the difference. Tax the sinners! LoL!

In Alberta canada here were paying about 1.20 a litre so thats 4.80 a gallon so i wouldn't complain yet.

nope, i voted not in 2008 as well (my vote assumes the national average will not exceed $4). my speculation is that it is a price bubble that will eventually burst. once our economy rebounds, and its supposed to bounce back with a vengence in Q3 and Q4 of 2008, people will start investing in domestic stocks again and the whole commodity index will decline.
Recent economic data is much closer to Wall Street estimates with a lot of the reports being favorable. It looks like the bottom has been realized and we are turning the corner.
Also, i think there is a lot of misinformation about why gas prices are high. India and China are consuming much greater amounts of crude oil causing the recent spike in international demand. if our war efforts are successful, a stable iraq will actually allow for greater producton driving costs down. its all economic law. there is a threshold that people are unwilling to pay for gasoline, and when as prices rise, more people are ditching their SUV's, taking the bus, carpooling, etc. even with the seasonal demand approaching, i dont think the average will top $4.
Light sweet crude oil currently trades for $116.16! Who wouldn't sell that! greedy bastards...

I dont think the Us economy is going to bounce back by Q3/Q4 2008. Wether it enters "recession" or not doesn't really matter but i'd be very suprised if there aren't some more major rightdowns from the big banks still to come. Citi just announced a further $15Bn on Friday and there wil be more to come. There is no confidence in the market, i also wouldnt be listening to the analyts on wall st, afterall they're the idiots who didn't see this coming in the first place. House prices may have bottomed out, especially with the low interest rates. I do feel sorry for the hardworking people who took out big mortgages last year who are now paying off a house worth $100k less then what they paid for it.
As for gas prices, people WILL pay whatever the price is available, they won't like it but they will pay it.

Cigarettes, gas & alcohol are all highly taxed already. I don't know the current millage rates or percentages, but cigs & adult beverages have been subject to heavy "sin taxes" for decades - with the intention of discouraging smoking & drinking by driving the prices up. Gas has perhaps dozens of federal & state taxes on it, most of which is *supposed* to be earmarked for bridge & highway construction & maintenance.
It wouldn't surprise me if the taxes on these things ran around 30-35% of the final price - or even higher.

Memorial Day is my pick for the national average... most refineries are in a transition mode from winter gas to summer blend so there's lots of down time right now which will push prices higher at a faster rate, but once all refineries made the change expect gas prices to come down by early summer.
