Apartments

So I'm getting ready to finally move out on my own. I'm 23. I finally have my finances down to where I could afford a studio apartment by myself. Actually, I could afford one before, but I was not discplined with my spending. Now I just need to save up first last security and head out.

It would be nice to get a bigger place, but roomates are hard to come by (especially ones you wouldn't want to kill.) Apartments around here (Massachusetts) are pretty expensive. The cheapest studios around here are 700, and even then you could get a 1BR for 800. I'm hoping to find a studio for 5-600

Anybody have any advice for me? ty

My only advice would be to drive around and look , check the papers and see what prices you can afford. And don't do it until you are ready. After that just enjoy having your own space.

While you are waiting I might buy the things you will need to furnish a palce so you have it all when you make the move.

I would recommend that you look for a house to buy. The Fed/Lender rates are so low right now that you can lock in at an extremely low rate and have something to show for your money in the long road. A apartment will just have you handing money away that you will never see again.

Regardless, Good Luck!

That's another option I suppose. Even with the low rates, its still really expensive up here though. A 1 story house would go for at least 200

I just figured it out,but it sounds like you are saying that you will buy him the stuff.I was going to say i think your married/engaged,but he's a loser and you will be much happier with me.I have plenty of things you could buy me:)

my advice to you:

budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget budget

check out mint.com

factor in the rent payment to your monthly earnings for the past few months, adn do this for the next few weeks while you are looking... it will save you the shock when you have to part with that much money each month

you input all of your financial accounts and it lets you track your spending habits... im trying to but a house or condo soon, and mint.com has been a lifesaver. really got a solid picture on how much i spend on gas, food, entertainment, etc.

would it be possible to find a roomate? not all are worth killing!

i wouldnt recommend buying unless you have close to 2k a month to use... sure rates are low and the market is great right now... but owning a home is expensive... maybe check out condos in the area .. but to buy something.. you either need money down, or STELLAR credit these days

LOL Uhm... I was trying to say get the things that you need to furnish an apatment before you move out. Otherwise its imposssible to budget, couches, tv's, etc in and pay all the bills.

My advice is to not rent from a real estate company. Rent from a private owner. You are way better off and will have nicer neighbors. If you can't meet that landlord and personally shake his hand, do not rent from him. Also if you don't like the looks of the guy don't rent from him. Your first months rent is usally rent+security deposit. A lot of the time the rent per month is the security deposit, some of the time it is less. Check the windows and doors at the apartment make sure they are secure. Open the refridegerator just to check the condition. Open and close cabinets....I know these things I have rent apartments since I moved out years ago.

I completely understand, but even after figuring out what you meant,it still sounds like you are offering to buy the things for him.My jaw hit the floor when i read that the first few times.Besides,he's a dude, hell be eating tv dinners off the floor with his hands using the box as a napkin and thinking it's perfectly normal. And don't you :rasp: me,i'll :rasp: you:)
To the thread starter, one thing that has always helped me is to figure how much money you need to save a week to pay monthly bills and put it aside.Act like you realy truly do not have that money. If you fall behind weekly it's easier to catch back up as opposed to doing it at the end of the month.I lived on my own since the day i turned 17,looking back i don't know how i did it then.

Lookn at gettin my own place too..looking at neighborhoods before i settle in anywhere though, dont want my shyt gettn stolen

Where in MA?
I lived in Fall River and had a pretty nice two-bedroom for $500/month. This was back in '03-'05.

Why not move out of Boston to NH bud. Chepaer rents for sure. Go somewhere like Nashua right over the border

Or look fo a condo to buy, they are giving them away right now

Long commute to work.

Fall River has some cheap places, but it's not the nicest place. I'm looking in Abington, Whitman, Rockland, some parts of Brockton

my only real input is to scout out the areas before, IME you have to get a balance between cheap rent and a relatively low scumbag population in the surrounding area. i had an experience where i went ubercheap and ended up living in a grimy neighborhood
