GUT health vs. Rhinovirus

NutraPlanet Fanatic
As you may or may not recall, I have been fighting my yearly winter illness off successfully for a few weeks. Unfortunately I missed my GUT Health doses for around 4 days. Wednesday after the gym it came on me like a tsunami...runny nose, shivering, coughing, general malaise.

So, right away I grabbed a new bottle of GUT Health and dropped 2 in the middle of the night, 2 the next morning, 2 mid afternoon, 2 in the evening, and another 2 this morning. I can already feel this cold breaking up and body-wise I feel SO much better.

My colds usually go for a strong 5-6 days before they start diminishing. Could be coincidence, but the effect has been pretty dramatic. I won't be skipping by GH doses again.

I found this study that tested the use of probiotics in treating common cold(rhinovirus), and influenza. More evidence to support one of the many amazing health benefits Gut Health provides.

Probiotic bacteria reduced duration and severity but not the incidence of common cold episodes in a double blind, randomized, controlled trial. [My paper] Michael de Vrese , Petra Winkler , Peter Rautenberg , Timm Harder , Christian Noah , Christiane Laue , Stephan Ott , Jochen Hampe , Stefan Schreiber , Knut Heller , Jürgen Schrezenmeir

To investigate the effect of long-term consumption of probiotic bacteria on viral respiratory tract infections (common cold, influenza), a randomized, double blind, controlled intervention study was performed during two winter/spring periods (3 and 5 month). Four hundred and seventy-nine healthy adults were supplemented daily with vitamins plus minerals with or without probiotic lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. The intake of the probiotic had no effect on the incidence of common cold infections (verum=158, control=153 episodes, influenza was not observed), but significantly shortened duration of episodes by almost 2 days (7.0+/-0.5 versus 8.9+/-1.0 days, p=0.045), reduced the severity of symptoms and led to larger increases in cytotoxic T plus T suppressor cell counts and in T helper cell counts.

I get sick once a year in the winter. It always comes. I just up my water intake x2 and it usually goes away in a day or 2. GH seems great for someone with a weak immune system though.

If anything Gut Health's probiotic effects of immunity boosting and preventative measures can benefit anyone in the long run.

L reuteri is made by Nature's Way and sold everywhere. Here's a product description but if you pubmed this particular strain, you will see it generally outperforms many other strains of bacteria as far as immunity goes. The "pearls" allow for intestinal release.

"PRIMADOPHILUS REUTERI PEARLS - Broad spectrum, enteric coated live probiotic, 100% stable at room temperature. Formulated for all ages. 1 billion organisms. No refrigeration required.

Only live probiotics can successfully colonise the intestine, yet these beneficial bacteria are sensitive to air, heat and light, and many strains cannot survive the stomachs acidity. New encapsulating techniques now allow live probiotic bacteria to be coated in a triple layer shell to give you a 100% stable and enteric coated probiotic supplement that does not require refrigeration. Whilst there are other probiotics that do not require refrigeration, they do not guarantee that the probiotics are live once the product gets to you, as Nature’s Way does. Nature’s Way guarantee the volume of live colony forming probiotics listed on the label of all Primadophilus products until expiry; this includes the Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls.

Usage: Primadophilus Reuteri Pearls are designed to deliver the clinically proven dose of L. reuteri and other beneficial microorganisms to the gut in a convenient go anywhere 100% stable form. Reuteri encourages gut healing and uniquely contains the specific protein "AGGH" that encourages lactobacteria to cluster and colonise in the intestinal tract. Diarrhoea, constipation, intestinal infections and certain medications can reduce the number of beneficial bacteria leading to gastrointestinal ill health. Reuteri Pearls are Ideally suited for any time a probiotic is recommended or being used and refrigeration is not practical – holidays, business trips, hospital stays etc.

Dosage: Maintenance: 1 pearl daily with or without food. Acute need: 2 – 3 pearls daily with or without food.

Ingredients: 15mg Proprietary blend of bacterial cultures – (1 billion colony forming units (CFU) Lactobacillus acidophilus Lactobacillus longum Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lactobacillus reuteri (100 million CFU)"

Maybe ill take it in the winter for a sick free year!

I would encourage you taking it year round actually to gain its overall health benefits and preventative measures :). Gut Health.......Prevention and treatment at its best!

UPDATE: Majority of my symptoms went away 1 1/2 days ago. There is only some dry coughing /residual phlegm coming out of my lungs.

I feel 1000% better.

i noticed the same thing this year... got my usual cold right after new years...

but this year ive been religious on antioxidants, gut health, and other general support vitamins and supplements... i had a cough and some phlegm, but i never felt the impact of the cold.. i never 'felt' sick, or missed a workout. energy was up the entire time..
definitely beats being out of commission for a few days for recovery

When i first started working in the e.r. 7 years ago, the first 2 years i was sick all the time. The good thing about it was in the end you build up a very good immunity/ immune response that is very effective. People could be very sick all around me all day/everyday and i'd be fine.

I didn't get sick for many years until i went back to treating kids in the pediatric e.r. We mix adults and kids where i currently work now, so overall its good in keeping up your skills in both areas. I had forgotten how bad a cold/viral syndrome could be until all the little sick kiddies reminded me.

Needless to say i've been taking my probiotics and antioxidants everyday since to maintain a more consistantly strong immune state, but with the stress on job potentiating a lowered immune response and constantly being exposed to different pathogens, it can be easier said than done at times. However, thusfar everything has been smooth sailing since enhancing my immune support(probiotics, antioxidants) and i honestly feel much better overall.

I think immune system boosting and formulating an overall anti-pathogenic, especially with the new mutant strains becoming more and more of a threat to humanity, will be one of RPN's priorities around mid-year. This will give us ample time to make sure we have an unbeatably potent formula ready to go by end of Fall/early winter.

Awesome, I think it's a great idea matt! I think a potent formula like this will be a godsend for many.

Paractin all the way. Loads of vitamin D and IP-6.

I seriously think that children are the prime breeder reactors for mutating viruses. Now that I have a one year old..I have been sick 2x this year which is very unusual for me and both times it was freakin awful and hard to shake even with all the best supps, probiotics, anti-ox's, vit D and calcium in the world.

I'm a big fan of both IP-6 and Vitamin D...especially during winter.

IMO, nutrient signaling and hormone levels are both potent immune indicators.

Also looking at some mushroom extracts, and a few other goodies.

True bio they indeed are. Especially school age children as their constant close contact/interaction with each other exposures them to different pathogens all the time.

There really have been many studies in recent years that promote/encourage vitamin D supplementation for its many overall benefits....especially with prevention/treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. I just had mine checked in a recent physical(35ng/ml) which wasn't bad, although the encourage optimal levels at 45-50ng/ml in serum blood tests. One of the many benefits of the florida sun imho haha :D

Along with that awesome suntan of yours!!!

Yes true, but currently i'm back to being my old white untanned self haha. It's cold down here right now.....it's only in the 60's during the day.......:D
