Frank Shamrock will defend his Strikeforce middleweight title against Cung Le on the second Strikeforce and EliteXC joint show scheduled for March 29 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. according to Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports.

The event is expected to air live on Showtime and include two Strikeforce bouts, two EliteXC bouts, and one bout featuring a Strikeforce fighter against an EliteXC fighter. Meltzer stated that a news conference announcing the event is expected some time next week.

Shamrock last saw action when he defeated Phil Baroni in the main event of the first Strikeforce/EliteXC joint event on June 22, 2007. He choked Baroni unconscious towards the end of the second round.

Le has built a perfect record of 5-0 since venturing into mixed martial arts in early 2006. In his last bout, fighting for Strikeforce in November, he defeated Ultimate Fighter veteran Sam Morgan by TKO early in the third round.

Also expected to fight on the card are Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and contender Josh Thomson. The bout had previously been announced for March 29 at Strikeforce’s November show in San Jose.

Melendez has since lost to Mitsuhiro Ishida on New Year’s Eve. It is not yet known if that will affect the status of his bout against Thomson.

EliteXC fighter Jake Shields is also expected to fight on the card.

This seems like a bit of a rush for Le. I can see Frank taking him down early and finishing it on the ground.

However, I am happy as this is on my birthday (a bit of self promotion never hurt)

Damn, this should be a solid card. Who knows how good either of these guys are today? I'd probably take Shammy by sub, though. Thomson-Melendez should be dope as well.

EDIT: I think there's an echo in here, lol...I agree completely with Reaper. For whatever reason, everybody seems happy to stand with this guy (I don't think I've seen all five of his MMA fights though). I doubt Shamrock will do so.

I look forward to seeing this fight. It will be fun to watch but I think Shamrock takes him down and wins via submission.

What happened to Frank and Ken fighting? I just read an article last week about it.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather watch Cung le Shamrock any day.

I trained with a group that did sanshou for a couple of weeks just to see what it's all about and I will say this, they train for any and every possible position and situation. I'm sure chung le isn't black belt bjj level, but you really don't have to be in mma if you're smart enough to stick to your strengths. I really am pulling for him against shamrock!

I hope that after frank beats him he figyts Ken, just for fun. Then Frank will beat him, and not fight for the next 3 years as usual

:frustrate

Josh Thomson (Pictures) will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a damaged shoulder, forcing the American Kickboxing Academy lightweight out of a Showtime-televised Strikeforce title bout against Gilbert Melendez (Pictures), Sherdog.com has learned.

The severity of the shoulder separation, which Thomson aggravated last week while training with "Razor" Rob McCullough (Pictures), is unknown. According to Bob Cook, Thomson's trainer and manager, doctors believe the 29-year-old lightweight would not heal in time to properly train for the once-beaten Melendez.

Thomson, whom Cook said has been bothered by the shoulder for several months, could face a minor scope if doctors don't find significant damage. However, there is a very real possibility that doctors will need to cut into the UFC veteran.

Winning six in a row since a five-round decision loss to Clay Guida (Pictures) nearly two years ago, Thomson (14-2, 1 NC) appeared primed to face Melendez (13-1) in the anticipated 155-pound showdown.
