thoughts,

man, i never had my head in the game today. i was confused all day. yesterday jj told me to take a couple warmups w knee wraps, but warmups didn't really turn out that way. there were 20 guys to a flight, and only our two monos in the warmup area. i took my opener (325) w no wraps and smoked it. when i came off, clay said he wants me to have a light wrap. i'm like, i've never had a wrap on and now my second is gonna be w one. tbh, i don't even remember the 340, but jj said it flew up. clay told me at least 365 for my third. i was like, i came into this as a tune up for the achilles, and wasn't planning on pushing it. i woulda been happy w 355. well, after looking at the film, today was the day i had 4 plates in me. the 365 looked like a warm up, and the judges told me so.

bench, the number in my head today going in was 265. opener flew off my chest and i think i made a tactical error here, that started yesterday. thursday, i had planned on opening w 235, but went w 240 when jj asked what it was gonna be yesterday. i got a little cocky i think, yeah, 5 lbs, but i think that 5 lbs cost me 15 today benching. if i woulda opened w 235, my second woulda been 260-265, and i.........would.......like......to think i woulda got 260.

i would like to point out that after i missed my last two attempts, jj came up to me and (jokingly) said "don't embarrass my gym."

so what do i do?

deadlift, god i'm stupid. i was really running a little hot after missing 2 bench attempts in a row, RAN up to the bar, ripped it up and it was like sunday at the gym, i paid no attention to tony's down command and looked like an ass.

at this point, i just went off by myself for a few, came back and could have bit a nail in half i was so pissed. shane said he saw the look on my face and just grabbed me by the head, and said just do it. i stuck to the plan and took 405 for my second and it was perfect. here i wish i woulda took a minute and looked at some film, but i was still pretty pissed. stuck to the plan and went w 425 for the third, but i'm pretty sure i left at least 10 on the bar.

in the end, i easily left ~30 for my squat, and ~10 for the deadlift. w/o my tactical error on my bench, there's another ~10 lbs

what could have been...
And that's gona be 50+ you pick up at the next meet man. No shame. Learn from it, improve and come back better. We all make mistakes. But not everyone learns from them. Make the best out of this and look forward not back.

Sorry you are disappointed with performance, but that squat was exceptional, and the DL very solid. Given where you've been injury wise, I think there is plenty here to be optimistic about. I am impressed.

Sorry to hear of this possible snafu re qualifying for worlds.

Hang in there, "Daddy."

txs jinxie, i told myself i had no expectations going in, but apparently i did. i'm excited about using wraps, too bad the apf/wpc doesn't allow them raw. i'll figure out a way to get to worlds. shyt, i could prolly get an invite just from winning in prague last year. i'll shoot amy at the apf an email this week.

And that's gona be 50+ you pick up at the next meet man. No shame. Learn from it, improve and come back better. We all make mistakes. But not everyone learns from them. Make the best out of this and look forward not back.
thanks brother, i know what to expect from the wraps now. and jake told me he put a medium wrap on me, i could prolly get 50 w a tight wrap. the wraps didn't bother me at all for my first shot w them. i plan on pulling 450 the end of may/first week of june. squat and bench have yet to be determined, but i think i'm putting the shirt away until june. i think i'd be better off training everything raw, since i haven't even put my squat suit on yet. my mind would have exploded trying to learn them both at the same time. plus, i want to try a different shirt.

so, the 30 ft moving van w the entire contents of detroit barbell broke down in the parking lot of the high school last night. we've got a few cops that train w us and one of them called a towing company and got it towed for free. only problem was, it was like 30 yards from the door at the gym. we got big mike to pull it w his excursion to about 15 yds from the door and that was about as close as he could get and still get his truck out.

3 monolifts, our 2nd best platform, every bar/bench/plate/rubber mat/weight tree in the gym had to be carried from the van into the gym. as the new guy, it was pretty much expected that i be there. it was a lot of fun after competing yesterday :( 100 lbs plates feel heavier than they normally do. we got it all in, closed the door and said fck it, lets go home...

Ahh, the joys of moving gym equipment....

I'm the guy in the white with my back facing the camera all the way to the left beside the guy in burgundy

The only thing worse than that jungle gym were the mats. Those f'ers are awkward and heavy.

lol, the stupid truck's lift wouldn't work cause it wouldn't start, so everything was 4 feet down to begin with.

there were like 12 of us and tracey, she counts as a guy since she's prolly stronger than 95% of the men in this country, and she's 148 lbs.

the experience and knowledge at dbb is both intimidating and inspiring. we had a 710 bench, 750 pull, one of our 181'rs pulled 585. shane, the dude in my last dl vid did like 1540 raw, no belt in his first meet. he's from out in farmland outside detroit. yeah, farm strong. 5'10" 220, just a beast. the big dude in the middle of the pic w the huge beard is kevin, he's total'd 2350 or something like that at 275. he was judging yesterday. we also had a raw 1600 at 220.

pssh, marc, the filipino w the light blue jacket on is the strongest 148'r in the history of 148'rs, totals 1750. amazing.

there was a dude from flint yesterday, black dude about 20, pulled 700 w/o a belt. it was incredible. i think that was more impressive than chad's - the monster on the far left in our pic, 750 pull.

Thanks guys, I'm not sure when my next meet is tbh. I need to call Amy and see if I can get an invite to worlds based on my win last year.

Just really bad timing this year: we go to the Philippines in a month for three weeks, and that will just play hell in my training. We get back and one week later I'm supposed to be off to Texas to qualify for worlds. There's just no way I will be ready, I always lose 10 lbs in the jungle, and I'll be weak as fck I'm sure.

I need to get a hold of Amy this week,
In MY mind, a win last year at worlds should get an invite..

ok, look. 81% of the guys going for a billion went out w the ohio state loss. you gotta figure, of the remaining 19%, 90% of them went out w the cincy loss. so, how many are left right off the bat?

nobody will pick a perfect bracket unless it's some kind of computer generated random pick kind of thing

first training day since the meet last week

bench

warm up, blah blah blah

clay had everyone doing sets of 5, with a comp pause

205x5x5 (81%)

4 board presses

275x3x3

vbar pushdowns

80x5x10

thoughts:

left bicep tendon is officially a problem. it felt meh going into today, but by the 4 boards it was cooked. i was thinking the 6 days off would help it, but it didn't. i was planning on getting in the shirt next week, but that has been aborted. i have ice on it now, feels a little better but it's still screaming. work sets were fast though. clay was yelling 'row the bar down.' i'm still trying to process that. i was talking out loud to myself, tracey heard me and said 'lower the bar w your back, bring your tri's down and into your lats' i tried it my last work set and it felt weird. that chick is so awesome...

<---took 800 when i got home, and i'll prolly take 800 more before i go to bed. i think the ice is best right now, just got done w round two. if there's one thing i know about on this earth, it's shoulder injuries. i don't think anything is structurally wrong w it, i just think it's pissed. minimal volume or time off is the only answer, and i'm leaning towards minimal volume to keep strength up as best i can.

yeah, learning at dbb is baptism by fire, there's so much experience there it's intimidating. example: i'm getting ready to do my last set and tommy, a world class bencher who's at relentless next week was doing his opener, 640. everything in the gym stopped until he was done. by the time he had it racked, jacob was yelling at me it's my turn and my wrist wraps weren't even tight yet. it's that fast.

i had a feeling we were gonna do lock out work today and i was right. i was looking forward to the 4 boards but by that time my shoulder was cooked...

it's pretty cool big shot, but i think my ego is getting in the way of my body at the moment. the shirt destroyed my bicep tendon - didn't plan on that, went into a meet, tweaked it a little more, now it's time to back off a little. i think i can focus on pulling and squatting raw for the foreseeable future, and put the bench on the back burner for now. just keep things status quo...

i can be ready for oct...

Ehh I'd say you're doing the right thing.

Taking the pússy way out would involve crying about your bicep tendon, and not competing at all.

decent day, squats were all fast. a little high on my last 335 set, but that's ok. 315x4 felt great. deadlift didn't feel too strong today, bar wasn't moving fast and the last couple sets were a struggle.

lots of shyt talking today at dbb, testosterone levels were running high. one of the youngsters came at me, saying when i'm stronger than him i can talk shyt. i came back w 'if you look at our totals from the last meet, lb for lb i AM as strong as you. how's it feel to be as strong as a 50 yr old man?' he was quiet after that. :)

if you get butt hurt easy, this ain't the place for you!

Fck yeah napalm. Squatting and deadlifting in the same day makes it a badass day any way you slice it. I learned the hard way. Also, I've learned throughout the years that if I wanna shït talk a 50-70 year old man, I better bring it, because they've been talking shït longer than I've been alive.

i try not to even think about doing both on the same day, because in the end, that's just an excuse.

that said, it's still pretty hard. i was squatting w marc the freak of nature, and was trying to keep up w him as long as i could rep/weight wise - that ended at my 315x4. he's still warming up at that point, so well, yeah...

i still had one card to play w the youngin talkin smack: a circle from the WPC that says world champion, he ain't got any of those

Awesome pulls man.

Also I love when people say that ****

My buddy is 250lb bragging about his wrapped 500 barbell squat and I told him the exact same thing. Me squatting 420 on the SSB wrapped at 180# is stronger pound for pound than 500 @ 250#.
He still didn't get it.. I don't think he's good with math

I've found that the only people that talk about pound for pound are smaller guys.

I'm stronger pound for pound than some of the guys I know, but it doesn't matter because they move more weight. Period.

Pound for pound has its uses but it's not everything. Some guys you just can't compare so pound for pound is a good starting point. No one is questioning whose stronger. I prefer to compare how strong you are to guys your own weight class. If you're at the top of your weight class and someone else is at the bottom of theirs...
