I believe the Jews took bartering to new heights when they introduced the concept of borrowing on time and its companion concept of lending for interest. Wow, generating new capital based upon "no actual work", but a "promisary" notion of "feduciary" renumeration! This was pure genius...It really caught the Romans off guard,as their "real" monetary system was usurped, as fiat money systems became more profitable than real coin. It eventually collapsed under the weight of its own defaults... This really pissed them off!!!

Actually, having made a fairly distinguished career as an economist myself recently, I feel entitled to state that the theory of capitalism and the underlying main concepts originate in Adam Smith but the act of capitalistic trade originates much much before him, as you put it, in the days of the Romans. But no matter WHEN we put the birth of capitalism, it was born much before Smith, who was only the first person to observe and theorize on capitalism. Even in pre-industrial times, capitalism had been present, to a degree.
