So I've been training for 30 years now (yikes), often sport specific, but have never strayed from the basic big 4 outside of some variations and of course auxiliary work. Embarrassingly at this point, I have never done Zercher squats until recently in hopes to add some variation now that I am not training for sports or competition anymore and I will say- DAMN. I feel like I missed out on a crazy effective movement all this time.
I added these in about 6 weeks ago and I will say that the transformation in a short period of time has been crazy. I've always had sizeable medialis (teardrop) in my quads but struggled with lateralis aesthetically. In 6 short weeks I can see visible improvement and feel stronger with lunges now. Quads feel like they are going to explode, even more than a good hypertrophy range of front squats. Not to mention the added benefit of an upper body pump in traps and biceps as a side effect.
I rarely hear about these and never seen anyone in the gym doing them, but I found a new favorite move and it would be worth looking at for anyone that hasn't done them.
