Wow, Fedor/Monson and Aleks/Antonio Silva!!!

Bodog has signed Fedor to fight on March 3 in Russia. Fedor will likely face Jeff Monson and his brother Aleks will likely face up and comer Antonio Silva. Fedor should have no trouble with Monson. Antonio Silva is no joke and hopefully Aleks will come in shape and put on a good fight(he looked like **** against Werdum). Bodog seems to be coming up quickly. What are your thoughts?
 
I love watching Fedor regardless. Monsons submission game is topnotch, but he better not stand long. That being said, I dont think Monson has a chance regardless, but hes strong as hell and can probably last a little while on the ground. I think Silva will destroy Aleks.
 
Yeah, I just saw this too. That's crazy news. It sounds like it won't effect his status with Pride, but I hope it won't delay the Mirko fight. I've never seen Silva yet, but it sounds like his style may be a bad matchup for Aleks given his performance against Werdum. This event already sounds better than some UFC events over the last year.


Edit: I thought Silva was more of a bjj guy, but it looks like he strikes more. Aleks should be able to handle him.
 
I still have not accepted the fact that Aleks' ground game/takedown defense is weak. I think he'll look better in this next fight and KO Silva. Uga, I agree I like seeing Fedor destroy someone almost as much as seeing him fight someone very competitive. Jas, when was Fedor/Mirko II suppose to take place? The first event after the Feb 24 Vegas show?

Not really sure. Mirko wanted it to be in Vegas, but it sounds like that can't happen now with this fight in March. There weren't any real solid rumors that I knew of for the date of the rematch.

Are these Bodog fights in a cage or a ring?
 
Bodog's fights are in a ring. Why is Fedor taking this fight is the question that I would really like to have answered? He has nothing to gain from this and the exposure in the US of Fedor/Crocop II is absolutley critical for PRIDE to gain a significant portion of the US market.

As far as Aleks/Silva, I think this could be a gateway fight for either of them to go the UFC. Aleks was is contract talks, but his loss to Werdum slowed down the progress and whomever wins this fight will probably be contacted by Dana White and Joe Silva.

I was wondering the same thing about Fedor fighting outside of PRIDE. I recall somewhere hearing that Fedor isn't especially well-known in Russia, so maybe he is more concerned with earning popularity in his homeland.

Plus, stomping Monson could serve a dual satisfaction for the Rusky public: Cold War revival--stomp the American; vengance for the oppression of communism in Russia--I think I read that Monson is a socialist.

Of course, I'm just babbling nonsense, and it probably has more to do with recognition in the homeland, and perhaps a favor for some friends in Bodog. As stated, there is a strong relationship between Fedor's team and the organization.

As for Aleks/Silva being a springboard to the UFC, wouldn't Silva have some sort of issue there b/c he weighs 300lbs. I thought there was a 265lb limit for the heavies.
 
I am pretty sure that Fedor is well known throughout Russia b/c of his achievements in sambo, but I am pretty sure that he signed for a huge payout. Monson is being fed to Fedor to establish his dominance in the US especially since he just fought with Sylvia. I like promotional competition, but I am afraid that this will lead to the corruption and splintering that is in boxing today.
 
People said that the stoppage was early on Sherdog, but he got dropped pretty easily apparently. Sounds like it was a bad show, presentation-wise. Anyone see it?
 
No I didn't see it, like you said I heard the presentation was horrible. I guess when your jaw is the size of a canteloupe its easy to hit.
 
Fedor is more than likely taking this fight because it is a chance to fight in Russia. How many opportunities will he have to fight in his homeland for the money he is worth? I don't believe he'll be leaving Pride. He has a clause in his contract that allows him to fight in Russia (although his contract is up after NYE). 2007 looks to be shaping up as an interesting year in MMA.
 
Fedor only takes single fight contracts. He can do whatever he damned well pleases :D I'm sure that Bodog is tossing an assload of money at him.

As for Monson/Fedor, it will be a beating I am sure. I am interested to see how Fedor plays this one, since monson isn't known to fight heavily from guard and I think Fedor will have a harder time tapping monson than he did coleman. This will probably stay on the feet, fedor might get taken down a couple times but when it comes down to it, jeff has no weapons that he can't deal with easily.
