Why take a protein supplement?

is it because you can't get enough protein through a normal diet?

is it because its too expensive to eat lean protein?

convenience?

how many grams of protein in a normal shake in comparison to say a can of tuna, which would have greater amount of protein?

Well, it's partly because of convenience.
But it's also a simple way of increasing the protein in the diet. This is useful when cutting because a pure protein powder does not contain much carbs or fat making it easier to hit your macronutrient goal. During cutting I also feel it's nice to have something sweet like a tasty protein shake to look forward to instead of just tuna, chicken etc.
It's also useful when bulking, an easy way of adding more protein to your diet even when your stuffed with lots of regular food. It's much less satiating to drink protein than to eat the equalient amount in for example beef.

Apart from making life easier whey protein and EAA powders have the ability to raise MPS beyond baseline when taken on an empty stomach.

the diet of the bodybuilders in the 1950 s and 60 s relied on eggs and milk plus other protein sources from food and if you look at the photos of them , their physiques are quite impressive.
OK they may not be as cut so you can see every vein , but their physiques were more wholesome if you like and looked healthier imo

I simply cannot eat large quantities of food all day. My GI is too sensitive. Whey and almond/rice milk shakes help me make up the difference. Otherwise I waste away. I don't really use bulk carbs anymore. Try to get those from oats and brown rice and make sure the meals I do eat are impactful and well balanced.

The liver is not stressed by a large protein intake, the kidneys could be but that's not likely even if the protein intake is huge. If you're healthy there's no need to be concerned about how the kidneys reacts to protein supplements.
And by the way, the body does not care if the protein comes from a supplement or food, it's the same and they have the same effects.
