Who owns a gun?

Well, if you want something for home protection that is most effective and safer, then a 12 ga. pump action shotgun would be my choice. The spread pattern is much more effective, as stated by the other bro's here...just aim in the general direction. The pump action is less likely to fail then if you used a semi-auto. Double barrel would also be nice, but only holds two rounds.

Make of handgun to decide on. If you are looking into a handgun, make sure it's from a quality maker. Glock, H&K, Smith & Wesson, Walther, Sig Sauer, Springfield, Colt are all respected makers. Don't settle for a Saturday night special. Remember, you get what you pay for.

Now, caliber. You want a caliber that has good knock-down power. For this, I suggest .45 cal, .357, 44 mag, etc. I like the way a 9mm and .40 cal feels when firing. They are much more controlable, and hold more rounds, but the knock-down power is just not there. I know it matters where you hit your target, but there have been many documented incidents where a target has been shot multiple times with a 9mm or .40 and survive. Remember...deadmen tell no tales, therefore, they can not sue you, or come back for you.

Now, action. You need to decide between a revolver and a semi-auto. Revolvers are the most reliable. If you decide on this type, make sure it's a double action. The downfall is they only hold six rounds and are more difficult to load while in a confrontation. You can purchase speed loaders, but they can be difficult at times

Semi-auto's are a more popular choice. They hold more rounds, their magazines are easier to keep on you, and they are easier to load during a confrontation. The downfall is they can jamb. To avoid this, make sure of the quality of gun you purchase, keep the gun clean and functional. If you decide on a semi-auto, I would suggest one that has a safety. Some brands do not offer this. But, for home protection, I would highly look into this. Less likely to have an accidental discharge with a safety...as long as it is used properly.

Now, ammo. A quality ammo can also make a huge difference. Practice ammo is usually lead ball, or covered lead ball. This type of ammo will gum up you barrel. Make sure you clean the gun good after using this. You will want to carry a quality ammo when using it for protection. Black Talons were kick ass rounds, but I don't think they are available anymore. I just recenlty got rid of a **** load of 9mm Talon rounds. I wish I would have kept them now. HydroShock rounds are what a lot of law enforcement agecies carry. Very reliable, and I have not had a problem with them jambing or misfiring.

If you purchase a gun, make sure you become very familiar with it. Practice with it, know how it works, know how to take it apart and put it back together with no problem. Also, most local law enforcement agencies offer a new program where they provide gun locks to the public for free. I would look into getting one of these and lock it up when you are not home, or when family, especially children, come to your home. If you, or any other bro's here need one of these locks, I can probably provide them to you for free. You'll just need to cover the shipping cost. PM me if when you need one, and I'll check my dept.'s stock.

Hope this info helps.

How come most people seem to be into foreign makes like H&K,glocks, sigs? They cost a pretty bundle too.
Reputation is probably a big reason. Plus, most of these are now made in the U.S. I am still a sucker for a good old fashioned Smith & Wesson. Remember...you get what you pay for.

You serious? Glocks are actually pretty inexpensive. I got my NIB 3rd generation G22 with Trijicon night sights for $400-something.

Well I bought a Mossberg 12 gauge 500A cruiser this weekend for 300$ it has a heat sheild front and rear pistol grip and a flashlight on the front of it. Holds 7 in it and one in the chamber. pretty intimidating looking gun I am looking forward to shooting it.
