When to take a week off

Just looking for some opinions on the frequency that you guys take a week off. When i first started training i hated taking time off, but i have no doubt that working out for 15-20 weeks without a week off definatly hurt my gains. I have been taking a week off every 7-8 weeks and have been liking the results. Also during your weeks off what do you guys do to pass the time?
 
i go 6weeks heavy 1 week off then 2 weeks some kind of shock. i have been training this way for some time now and things are goin well for me
