What's Up With These Huge Gut Photoshops (Ronnie Coleman)?

Pushofabutton said:
I have meet him in person 2x's. Look at the distortion in his legs. It is a photoshop. If it isn't find me the photo under an IFBB webpage. You won't.

The first pics are screen captures of Mr. Olympia 2004. So I went to download the video highlights of Coleman vs. Cutler to confirm, and his gut really is that huge.

Yes exactly. Well, if it is possible to get that big, then it sure is possible for someone with average genetics, proper nutrition, training and assistance to get to the physique level of, say, Frank Zane...

Even the Arnold-era pros used *some* gear - but their awesome physiques were due, for the most part, to extreme dedication, diet, and training. When I was a kid and I'd watch Arnold movies, I'd think to myself "I want to look like him!" - before all this insane drug use the 'big' guys served as motivation. Maybe you couldnt look just like Arnold, but you could look pretty close if you were dedicated enough, trained long enough, used a little gear, etc.

But today, I just look at these 300+ lb freaks and just shake my head.

Hmmm, probably not:

But maybe this guy could:

Either way, personally I would rather look like Zane than Coleman.

I disagree with this. Many people (Rick Wayne foremost among them) have claimed that Arnold used to chow down on d-bol like it was fruit loops.

So in Arnold's day those guys used heavy as well.

However, their usage was obviously nothing compared to what is going on today.

Yes....Zane or Nubret, fo sho. Looking at Coleman makes my stomach upset. I mean yeah its dedication, but wow. I'm cool with with Cutler, but o well...

No doubt he did his share - but how do you know what kind of doses he was taking back then? And what was considered a 'large dose'?

I wasn't saying the old pros didnt use - but the majority of their strength and size came from their training and their diet. Ill bet you even if Arnold never touched an anabolic he'd still have been a ripped 225 or so. He definately had the genetics for that.

How big would Cutler or Coleman be if they trained without chemical enhancement? Not saying its 'wrong' - just saying its gone way too far.

I agree it has gone waaaaaaaaaaay too far.

IMHO the mid/late 80's were the peak of bodybuilding.

Since then it has gone from fascinating to freak show.

Synthol is just one example.

My big problem with your post was that I read it as saying Arnold and his peers didn't rely on juice. I say that they did. No doubt that Arnold's genetics were awesome...but I think that it was the juice that made him the Austrian Oak.

I think using steroids were a big part of him getting to a ripped 240, but I think even without them he would have been a jaked 220 or so. Old tales of people saying '..he at D-Bol for breakfast' are just that - old tales. Im sure he did his share of drugs - but he wouldnt be what he was if it werent due in part to genetics, diet, training, motivation, etc. Drugs alone did not make him the Austrian Oak, nor were they the only reason why he got to that point.

I agree with you to a point, but look at it this way:

Say a good 20-25 lbs of LBM on Arnold's frame in his peak condition were due in part to anabolic enhancement. Assume at ~5% BF his total LBM was 228. That's about ~9% of his LBM gained through steroid use.

Now, assume Ronnie Coleman has an LBM of about 270lbs. At 5'11" compared to Arnold's 6'1", we'll even give him the genetic advantage and assume he could also attain a natural physique of 220lbs at 5% BF. That's about 19% of his LBM attained through drug use.

I dont know what Im trying to prove with all this math:), but my point is the only thing separating the pros of today from the pros of the 70s and 80s is well more than double the drug use. Im sure that the anabolics involved in going from 240 to 280 at the same bodyfat does not follow a linear path.

Exactly. And from "fascinating" to "freak show" is right, too. And what about Ms. O? Yikes!!!!

Dammit, you look at the fitness competitors they're all bigger than Corinna Everson at her Ms. O. C'mon... Where's it all gonna stop?

Cory Everson was the limit at what I would still consider an 'attractive' female. Some of the other women I've seen...my god...

I think we are really saying the same thing.

Back to the topic of guts and guts as a result of huge meals:

If anyone has "Pumping Iron", I believe it is in the bonus footage that they show the bodybuilders all go out to eat. They eat steaks with burgers, etc. They all order 2 or 3 meals. I don't know if they ate this way daily, but as I recall from the commentary, it seemed to have been a regular ordeal.

I tend to think it had more to do with drugs then anything else, based, as I referred to before, on ALR's statement that we have a high density of IGF-1 receptors in the abdomen, I believe on the intestines.

I'm with ya' BV, I've been hitting the vacuums too

I remember from the special features on the Pumping Iron DVD, Arnold said that the scene where they're stuffing their faces was staged just to get the reactions of the people sitting next to them. Ill try to find it next time I watch the film...

You know, ever since Ive read this thread Ive been hitting them every day. Pulling in my abs as tight as I can for as long as I can...Ive actually noticed that my belly pokes out a little less when Im completely relaxed. Now when I can look like Frank Zane doing vacuums that will be the day:)

BV, I just watched that bonus footage again. He doesn't say it was staged; he says he loved that type of scene when people would just be totally shocked watching their tremendous intake of food, 3 hamburgers, etc. There was nothing staged about it.

Really? I must have been mistaken then. I know a lot of stuff in Pumping Iron was 'done up' for dramatic effect...

Even if they did pound down their food this way all the time - you're right, none of the old pros has huge, distended abdomens like they do today.

It was things like the T-Shirt theft, the rivalry, etc., that was made up . They were one big, happy, heterosexual family :D
