What to tell your doctor...

Hey guys,

Just went to the doctor today to get a referral to a dermatologist. I have Acne on my back, shoulders, and a little on my arms. My doc asked my if I took any "protien suppliments, hormones, test., or steroids" I said no, because I have had this type of acne on and off since I was like 14. He said they would probably give me an antibiotic. I wonder if this will screw with my test levels or if next time I should tell him I take ph's....
Oh and another thing, what the hell was he talking about "protien suppliments"......If I eat to much steak am I gonna break out :icon_lol:
Please, that doesn't sound right.

Any comments?

I let my dr know I'm on ph and he did not know what they were. after I explained them he lumped them into one catogory with supplements and said not to take any supplements. the nurse was clueless also. I'm getting a new dr. I dont know if an antibiotic would mess with you test levels but I would not think so?
 
He probably asked if you're on any protein supplements because he's seen idiot patients who were on PHs & didn't know they were taking exogenous hormones. I'm sure legions of teens have no idea that m1t is any worse for them than muscle milk.

You should be honest with the doc though, for the best assessment of your health.

True, it is only for acne though and I didn't feel like having the doc not tell me to do this and that you know what I mean?

He's a very good doctor who is wise to the world of bodybuilding so I didn't want to tell him things that would make him think that supps were causeing my acne, because I know they are not. Ill tell him at my physical because I think I will weigh a little more....

long courses of antibiotics will halt protein synthesis within your body, meaning they can be quite catabolic.


If you have had that type of acne since the age of 14 he shouldve opted to put you on a regime of accutane.
 
If he is a very good doctor who is wise to the world of bodybuilding, you should have been honest with him upfront and told him that you do take prohormones, but the acne came beforehand due to puberty. Now if you try to change your story, he may have doubts. Whenever you hide something from a doctor lol, you should reply "no, why?" lol so he can tell you what it would have meant if you did do the stuff,etc..

Well I only went to see this doctor so I could get a referral to see a dermatolagist. This doctor is just the dude who does my physicals so he might know about bodybuilding but he doesn't know squat about the skin so I did't want to have a convo about the use of steroids with him. I just wanted my referral and to get the hell outta there. I will tell my dermetologist though when I see him on october 12. I can't wait to get rid of this friggin acne.

Yeah man, it sucks. I have backne scars, and acne scars on my shoulders from puberty.. it sucks.
 
Pirate, Word of caution;

If you are using any kind of med insurance, and they find out they might drop you. Insurance Co's can be dicks and if they think that you are taking anything that will affect your health so that they have to pay clames...

Just be cautious

Thanks for the advice, but it is illegal for doctors to communicate with insurance companys. The only way they could find out information of pro hormone use would be to read notes on physicals. 99% of doctors will just write down, "Lifts weights" if you tell them that you take suppliments. Most doctors will not write down that you take steroids on your physical form. This is a good word of caution though. Thanks alot.

Confidentiality, yes. But if an insurnace co. wants to know whats going on they will get the story one way or another. In this case its extremely unlikely though cause lets face it lots of ppl get acne and get scrips for it.

Anyway like others have said you should inquire about something more effective than an antibiotic if you've had acne for a long time. Retin-A, tazorac, differin and of course accutane are all good for chronic acne.
 
yeah I was at the doc yesterday and they wrote down that I took vitamins, creatine, and glutamine. The nurse asked me that. When the doc came in we had our talk about "what if" I were to take this. He got the picture and gave me some good advice.

What was funny was after our "what if" talk I defenitely let him know when I asked if he could check my test, t4, estrodiol, and liver values.

Dr's can and do communicate w/ins co's all the time and it's perfectly legal. When they submit a claim it has a diagnosis code # and a treatment code # on it that tells why they are treating you and what procedures they are doing. Normally the ins. just pays the claim but if there is any question about a certain procedure they can request treatment notes. The intake form you sign when you first see a Dr. has some fine print right near the signature area that allows them to release any information necessary to get a claim paid. If it's not an emergency, I'd be a little careful about giving too much information.
 
if you get put on accutane you may want to curb your prohormones, accutane is very very hard on the liver, when i took it when i was a teenager, i remember getting liver values checked weekly for precaution. accutane worked very well, it just sucked being on it with the dry skin, but the end result was great
