We Need More Selenium in Our Diets

Evening Standard - London

LACK of the chemical selenium in British diets could be causing a rise in cancer cases and harming people's immune systems, scientists warned today.

They called for research into the growth of selenium-enriched vegetables and grain crops.

Selenium is a micronutrient that has an antioxidant-effect when combined-with vitamin E. High levels can be found in meat, fish, grain and Brazil nuts.

The researchers found that people's immune systems were impaired by the lack of selenium in the British diet. "We have seen levels drop by 50 per cent from 25 years ago when a lot of our bread was made from selenium-rich grain from Canada," said Dr Malcolm Jackson, from the University of Liverpool, who led the research.

" There is a range of things we can do but we need to do this soon."

Farmersare testing seleniumenriched plants, including garlic, onions, leeks and broccoli, and seleniumenriched bread is available in some areas.

Separate research has shown that selenium supplements can cut the risk of some cancers.

Interesting you brought this up... seems the FDA now recomends 1 cup of fresh blueberries a day.. which I have been eating for years now. Blueberries are one of the better sources of selenium as well..

I have blueberries n cream muscle milk does that count? haha I drink this certain type of orange juice now its an immunity defense or something like that and it has selenium in it.

I've been taking selenium for years as deficiency also has a link to depression and mental illness as do folic acid and chromium.
