Viagra & Nizoral (Ketoconazole) Interaction

According to this link from John's Hopkins University, Ketoconazole, which is the active ingredient in Nizoral shampoo, should not be used with Viagra. Invalid Link Removed See section under Drug Interactions. Anyone else know of this? If so, what kind of drug interaction occur as a result? I've used them both, and other than the typical Viag headache/stuffy nose, I don't experience any adverse effects. Maybe Viag with a topical form of Ketoconazole is okay?

Ketoconazole is used orally as an anti-fungal to treat bad athletes foot:

Ketoconazole is used to treat fungal infections. Ketoconazole is most often used to treat fungal infections that can spread to different parts of the body through the bloodstream such as yeast infections of the mouth, skin, urinary tract, and blood, and certain fungal infections that begin on the skin or in the lungs and can spread through the body. Ketoconazole is also used to treat fungal infections of the skin or nails that cannot be treated with other medications. Ketoconazole is in a class of antifungals called imidazoles. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection.

That's why its used topically as a anti-dandruff shampoo. Used as a topical, it shouldnt have any systemic absorption. Especially if only used and the shower and rinsed off your head ~5 minutes after application.

Invivo, Ketoconazole is a strong inhibitor of the CYP 3A4 enzyme in the liver. This is why you should consult your doc if you're taking oral Ketoconazole and Viagra. The ketoconazole would inhibit CYP3A4, resulting in an increased concentration of viagra in the bloodstream This could lead to an increase in effects of the viagra, as well as undue liver stress.

I dont think you have anything to worry about using it as a shampoo.
