VARICOCELE...can it effect testosterone?

I think a lot of people worry too much about these things.

Look - ballz are connected to your body with tubes and viens and stuff - they feel like "worms" to some ... but those would be normal "worms" and not the abnormal "worms" that you get with vari. Don't self diagnose - see a doctor on this.

Second - size ... my right one is the "work horse" ... it's lower, and bigger than the left. This is a normal condition. My left one is about 75% of the mass of the right. Having one "small" one doesn't necessarily equal atrophy.

Third - I'd like to see some more info on this - because I think that one nut can supply all your testosterone needs. :D

Honda, I think you're right in most cases. For those with varicocele (if unilateral) I think even if you look at it like you've got 1.5 balls working for you they've got to be able to put out decent T if things like LH/FSH are in order.

In my opinion noticeable varicoceles should be fixed in almost all cases, if there is still an issue with T you owe it to yourself to check other hormones to confirm primary or secondary failure. Just doesn't make sense to me that with 1.5 working balls T could be in the toilet.

More news on my surgery recovery, close to a month after the microsurgery...recovery is going well, I'm lifting again, will run soon. However, the varicocele persists when standing and deflates when laying. I'm going in this week to get a referral to a radiologist for him to check the veins and schedule an embolization. Unfortunately the surgery was almost a complete failure...

After some research on why they persist, there are collateral veins that often supply 2nd and 3rd sources of blood to the varicocele. When operating they cut the big veins but often leave the smaller veins, allowing the varicocele vein that may be cut above to still fill up with blood (slightly slower) and live on.

The great thing about the embolization is they can inject dye and see all the pathways that are filling those veins and block them all. Therefore, as long as the coils hold their position (schlerosing agents help) you'll know when you walk out of the hospital whether the procedure was a technical success or not...seems to me the embolization from a skilled doc isn't as bad as this forum would lead you to believe.

I'm really wishing I would've done the embolization first as it would've saved me a scar and I'm going through it anyway...

Science,
I believe it takes them months to die, but they shouldn't inflate/deflate anymore. More like a hard mass of clotted blood shrinking over time. Blood flow indicates veins still connected to a blood source...I think.

I'll know more after seeing the radiologist. Worst case scenario he embolized the missed veins.

Hey guys, I am new here. The reason I joined is actually cause i have had a grade 3 vericocele and low testosterone accompanying it, this site helped me learn more about the issue and helped alot. Anyway I have alot of experience to share.

I am 22 years old, i had a grade III bi lateral vericocele and a benign tumor on left nut.
BEFORE SURGERY (9 months ago)- my testosterone was at 490, though I had started getting MAJOR erectile disfunction, and also starting shooting blood instead of cum (Result of tumor). So since i had both vericocele and tumor, the doctor at Weil cornell decided to split it up into 2 surgeries. He prescribed me Cialis, and 8 pumps of Androgel after surgery 1.
I put on 20 pounds in 4 months of muscle cause of androgel and lifting ( I lost weight, I was 142, and got to 165), and the third month I had a second surgery.

Now its about 5 months since my second surgery fully completed, and I have had multiple testosterone tests. I came off androgel 2 months ago snce my levels declined to 390....Without androgel, 2 months later I am at 345? My estrogen is at 36 aswell...The estrogen could be since iam takin 100 DHEA.

Nyway, my T-levels stayed the same so far and my doc wants to put me back on the adrogel with also arimidex...Im feelin reeli ****ty about having HRT at 22 after the surgery and after I stopped HRT...Guys pls comment on my situation, if anyone has questions pls feel free to ask...btw life is ALOT better without those veins

...btw life is ALOT better without those veins

In what ways? Your testosterone before surgery was 490 (where most men can function quite normally) and 345 after the surgery. I understand the tumor HAD to be removed, but how has repairing the varicocele improved your life or health if test levels are lower and you may need HRT for life anyway?

so sorry, honest error my t was 290 b4 surgery, and whilst on 8 pumps of androgel it raised to 1000 something (dont remember exactly)
Other negatives of vericocele...those veins were massive (Grade 3, Bilateral)...it looked like i had a bag of fkn blue worms in my ball sack (Grosses **** u ll ever see)...my t levels were low, n I couldnt get hard ever...literally. I remember a sad moment where i was drunk at 10 pm and had 2 girls ready to go, n it stayed flaccid, they were both like wtf dude, one of em asked me if i was even attracted to girls lol
N THE SAD THING IS EVEN WHEN I WAS SOBER i could barely get it 80 percent hard.
The reason was the veins cut of circulation, And it lowered my T score to 290, it correlated with ED, and other low t symptoms. BTW, i once again apologize for writing 490, honest error.

With HRT for life...maybe I might need it for life, I dont know, that hasn't been confirmed. Plus why walk around with massive veins, its sensless, unless its lower then a grade three i believe its definetly alot free'r down there without the veins.

"2) sever worry and sleep loss and poor diet also have a major impact on T levels and libido. The more I worried about this the less libido I had until I thought I was broken. Finally I told myself I was acting crazy and I was having sex again within a couple days"
STM

There’s a lot of truth to what you’ve said here. I’ve had a visible left sided grade 2 varicocele since I can remember. My libido didn’t take a hit until about 2-3 years ago after getting through 2 extremely stressful events in my life. Before that getting wood was never a problem. Stress and worrying are HUGE factors for libido which I still face today. I got through college but am now in an extremely stressful job which isn’t helping. I can noticeably tell my libido comes back after a long weekend not worrying about my job. Of course a proper diet, exercise, and sleep are key as well.

I personally think forums like these do more damage than good for varicocele sufferers. I honestly didn’t think having a varicocele was that big of a deal until I read testosterone could be affected. After that discovery I started developing a lot of negative “self talk.” The varicocele topic was on my mind all day and a constant source of worry. I remember always thinking that if I didn’t do the surgery my nut would shrink away and decrease t levels at an exponential rate. Finally I went ahead and did the surgery to bring me some peace of mind.

It’s been about a year since my surgery and my focus has turned to my overall health and happiness. I’m trying to stay dedicated to keeping fit, improving my diet, and removing stress from my life. Friends and hobbies are a big help and keep you from being depressed and feeling sorry for yourself. My 2 cents on this topic right now..

Not guaranteed to lower anything, but can in some people. In my opinion you're likely to be fine with a small/medium sized varicocele, maybe for life, maybe not. I think they're worth getting fixed if covered by insurance because they can have an effect and the longer you've got it the more chances you're giving it to affect you.

Having said that, I wouldn't sweat having one, as long as you get it checked out.

My loads don't seem as large or as powerful as before. To the people that have had the surgery, does that improve?

I'm not sure if I want to go through with the surgery. I've heard so many bad stories...

I mainly just want to get rid of the occasional aching and my saggy scrotum :(

Have had a varicocele since I was 12 years old and am 20 now. I'v been worried for years about it effecting my testosterone and finally decided to have it tested. And guess what? My total T came to 850 ng/dL. So before you convince yourself that you have low T bc of a varicocele, get your **** checked

you may want to get it repaired anyway, things are good now, but you dont really want to be 36 years old with a 20+ year old varicocele and test levels at 320...just high enough that no doc is willing to help you. to compare my 34 yo brother with hepatatis b, and no varicocele has double my test levels.

You who are worried about your testosterone levels, i suggest you check out the studies i posted earlier. You have nothing to be worried about.

In fact here is a study that was conducted just last month

Serum FSH (10.42 +/- 10.84 vs 9.11 +/- 18.81, p < 0.001) and Testosterone (5.73 +/- 5.97 vs 5.21 +/- 2.43, p < 0.001) levels were significantly higher in patients with varicocele compared to patients without varicocele.
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21341585

It may just be a coincidence in this case, but the other studies i posted showed zero correlation between varicocele and testosterone. In fact most people experience they have lower testostorne because they believe they do, due to the varicocele.

Personally i do not want a surgeon cutting near my balls, there is too much space for human error. I will stand by and await medical help to regenerate collapsed valves

Had the embolization done. Will report back on recovery. Procedure was painless, feel no pain now and its 3 hours later. Cost me $1000

I had decreasing testosterone before i even knew what a varicocele was. I am bilateral as well, and this is the first study i have seens that claims men with varicoceles have HIGHER testosterone levels. THe ones I have read indicate that starting in the mid to late 30s will see lower testosterone levels due to long term leydig cell damage. If i was not on a crappy work computer i would dig up the references but this computer nearly freezes up with multiple tabs open.

Testicular torsion of left testicle when I was 17; after surgery a varicocele formed. I am now 30 and recently became concerned about low testosterone. Had levels checked by a local anti-aging doctor a couple of weeks ago. My TSH is at 10.693 uIU/mL and total testosterone is 289 ng/dL. Still waiting on other results from Genova Diagnostics for serum levels. He just sent me a script for .75 mg of synthroid and said that I have "additional hormone imbalances" to address at next visit. Has anyone had success raising testosterone levels by treating hypothyroidism with synthroid? Also, would it be alright to take synthroid for hypothyroidism while on testosterone replacement therapy?

Yes you can take T4 along with HRT, but you may not need it. Hypothyroid conditions cause hormone imbalances including low testosterone. Raising thyroid may very well raise your test levels.

My varicocele developed when I was 17. It was fairly noticeable at that time. But over the years, it seems that the varicocele has shrank along with the testicle. Could the varicocele get smaller as the testicle it feeds atrophies? Also, it feels like the varicocele vein goes up into my body.

If someone with any kind of knowledge please help. ok ive been dealing with chlamdyial prostatitis for awhile now. its giving me a small varicocele and the varicocele has caused damage in the area to the left testicle and veins in the area. im suffering from ED semen watery sprem and months ago i had chronic pain in my scrotum. the pain in the scrotum is not been bad anymore i really dont even feel pain down there anymore to be honest. but some times when i try to do something heavy lefting wise or strain my abdomin i can feel the pain come back. i just recently had an ultra sound and the docter said i have a small varicole. and damage in the area i been kind of new that so it wasnt anythang. new from my own knowledge of doing research on this situation, then i just got my semen anaylis back and that came back normal, but showed that i did lose some sprem count. i know im suffering from infertility i really dont think that test was not accurate cause just from going thru. this situation for months now ive had so much liquid watery sprem. the only reason why on te test for the semen might not have been that bad is cause. i been dieting better with alot of furits and giving my body better nutrints so i think thats been helping. the urologist i was seen tells me that the embolization procedure, wouldnt be good for me cause where the damge. is i can mess up an artery.

I personally know that the embolization procedure is 100 percent artery certified the urolgist i was seen just dont care and im see a new doc soon and i want that procedure done to help with the infertility. and i want to know if i got a prostate msg would it help with the prostatits i dealing with, another thang is the blood flow in circulation from the testicles to the heart is a problem cause im strating to have chest problem. i know blood flow and circulation is a big problem probably the main no flow down there if some one has any knowledge please help thank you names ray.

The bottom line...

Hello everyone,

Last month, I realized that I had not been experiencing morning woods or other woods that I had normally had during the day. I became a little bit doubtful about myself but I tried to keep my mind away from these negative thougts and I told myself that I am as good just as I was a few days ago. Then I began to do some search on the internet why I was like this and a lot of things came up. Then I decided to see a doctor to get an exact result. I had my nuts examined by a urologist. As soon as he touched the testicles, he told it was grade 2 varicocele, which made me really upset:( He also wanted me to do semen analysis and doppler ultrsond. My varicoceles turned out to be true during doppler and the doctor told that my semen parameters were normal; he also added that I did not need to go for an operation because of normal semen parameters. I told the doctor that I had been experiencing low sex drive and asked why I was having this, he knitted his eyebrows and said that it was not because of varicocele. Then he prescribed me a depressant drug and asked me to come back and have myself checked the following moth. Anyway.. I have been reading through forums, articles, scientific stuff about varicocele and from all the things I have read so far, a blurry picture occured in mind:

1. Unfortunately, varicocele is a disesase that has not an exact way of treatment.

2. Surgery does not guarantee success.

3. Not having operation might have neither bad nor good effects.

4. Not having operation might have bad effects.

5. Even if successful, surgery might not help hormone levels increase.

6. Doctors know little about varicocele.

7. There is no concensus about how to treat varicocele.

8. Doctors do ignore our symptoms; almost everyone has experienced some sort of decreasing t levels, doctors constantly keep saying varicocele has nothing to do with these symptoms. I dont understand how they dare ignore and not listen to us.

9. I believe that a few years later, researchers will prove that varicocele directly affects t levels and it should be treated as soon as possible.

10. I think I should go for an operation and but I should not expect much from the op.

11. I think the key to fighting with varicocele is that we should feel confident and not lose hope. Stress is the most dangerous ilness and I believe stress gives much more damage than the varicoce veins themselves. We should tell ourselves that we will be better and recover from these veins.

Hello everyone,
6. Doctors know little about varicocele.

8. Doctors do ignore our symptoms; almost everyone has experienced some sort of decreasing t levels, doctors constantly keep saying varicocele has nothing to do with these symptoms. I dont understand how they dare ignore and not listen to us.

6. This thread has 1422 posts. At the very least that points to how common varcoceles are among healthy males. Doctors know quite a bit about them.

8. I have had (still do) a varicocele for 40 years. I have 3 children and absolutely no sexual problems until I reached 40. Varicoceles have very little to do with the symptoms you describe and you will not find many men who have had a SIGNIFICANT increase in testosterone levels from getting their varicocele repaired. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but then the exceptions aren't the rule.
There are many men who function quite normally with only one testicle after one was removed due to an accident or cancer.

Varicoceles usually come along during puberty. The one thing that is not common among men with varicoceles is short stature, undeveloped sex organs or lack of facial and body hair. I'm 6' tall and weigh 240 and have more hair than I care to. IF varicoceles affected testosterone levels, everyone who had one would be short, hairless and have baby penises.

I'm not saying your symptoms are not real. I'm just a firm believer that the doctors know what they are talkng about (in this case) and they aren't caused by your varicocele.

If your doctor didn't already do it, you need to get some blood tests to determine what your test levels are, what your estrogen levels are and where your thyroid numbers are at. Any of these could explain your symptoms.

Numbers 2 and 3 are definately true and if number 10 is even a remote possibility, then why have the procedure done?

I just recently had an ultra sound and the docter said I have a small varicole and damage in the area. I kind of knew that from my own knowledge of doing research on this situation, so it wasn't anything new.
I just got my semen anaylis back and that came back normal, but showed that I did lose some sprem count.
I know I'm suffering from infertility. I really dont think that test was accurate because just from going through this situation for months now, I've had so much liquid watery sprem.
The urologist I was seeing tells me that the embolization procedure, wouldnt be good for me because of where the damage is I can mess up an artery.

Another thing is, the blood flow in circulation from the testicles to the heart is a problem because I'm starting to have chest problems. I know blood flow and circulation is a big problem probably the main no flow down there if some one has any knowledge please help thank you names ray.

What you know and what your results show are diametrically opposed. If you don't trust your medical tests, how can you trust anyone here?

Blood flow and circulation may be a big problem, but there is no way your varicocele is affecting your heart.

I have bilateral V-seals for a long time now. I used to be very constipated as a child and the straining may have caused it. I had it confirmed 10 years ago on ultrasound

@DragonRider: Didn't want to quote all that, but solid stuff man -- I agree with essentially all of your rationale.

I've also had this **** bilaterally for about 8 years or so, but you'd never know by looking at my bloodwork or swimmer analysis (had both a couple years ago).

It's kind of weird to feel, but that's the extent of it's impact on my life and livelihood.

My varicocele appears to be the most common type from everything I read (left side only).
I didn't know if this rational would apply for bilateral varicoceles, so I appreciate you weighing in.

it may not be effecting my heart but i know sense i been dealing with this i been feeling pulling and straing in my chest and every one knows that you are supppose to produce a certain amount of blood flow from the testicles to to the heart sense i have damage in my testcles i know im not producen the right blood flow strain and pulling in my testcle area is the damge from the variocele that why i hope to god i can get this embolization procedure so i can get some justice for this situation along with me rehabing on my own tryn eat healhty realax my muscles and workout get my self back on track

and every one knows that you are supppose to produce a certain amount of blood flow from the testicles to to the heart

What are you basing this on and how do women survive without this ability?

I have had a varicocele since I was 13 and I am now 25. My total test is 753ng and my free test is 22.89. It hasn't affected me.

Varicoce vs. Viagra?

Since I was diagnosed with varicocele grade 2, I have been trying to console myself saying like: you are gonna be okay, you are already good and so on. But even if I am not bad and do my job as I did in the past, I cannot be sure about tomorrow; so I am looking for something that I can rely on to balance my performance or even increase it. One of the most reliable ways of increasing performance is using viagra or cialis, as far as I know. And I know that these drugs do their job changing the blood flow which I think is directly related with variocese veins.

Here is my question;

Is there any relationship between viagra and varicocele? Is it safe for me to use viagra?
Is there anybody with varicocele who has used viagra or cialis? If yes, what were the effects on you?

I have had a varicocele since I was 13 and I am now 25. My total test is 753ng and my free test is 22.89. It hasn't affected me.
Most medical literature that I have seen says that test levels are going to be normal, though bilaterals will have a greater chance of seeing a drop in total test in their 30s...

If you have had chlamydia long enough to have prostate issues I would focus on that rather than the other nonsense you are spouting.

fix prostatitis first, as is probably the cause.

you need to realize that modern medcine plain sucks at treating prostatitis. it seriously harder to treat than cancer.

There is a doctor in Kos, Greec...Manilla, Phillipines....and Tuscon, Arizona that knows how to properly treat this.

Wow this thread is huge and just what I needed to read up on similar stories.
I'll try and keep this as short and detailed as possible otherwise it would be a huge post.

okay here we go...

Since 2008 I have started going round to doctors that I am not feeling well. Weak, fatigued, strength not increasing as it should from the training etc.. So started having some blood tests.

Test was at the low end already around 10nmol/L range 8-30, I was 31 at the time.

Fast forward 3 years and I have started to try and get something done. Back then every doctor said I am fine etc... so I let it be.

2011 results:

February -

Free T4 - 16.6 (10-19)
Free T3 - 5.1 (3.5 - 6.5)

Free T4 - 21.9(10-19)
Free T3 - 5.0 (3.5 - 6.5)
TSH - 4.40 (0.5-4)

Doctor prescribed me 100mcg T4 daily.

T4 meds kind of worked at the start as I did feel an improvement. But after the initial 2-3 months I have started feeling worse than ever before.

June 2011 - Now in Czech Republic (so maybe their ranges or scaling is different) as before I was in Australia. Suddenly Ft4 is in range still on 100mcg, surprising.
Free T4 - 14 (7-16)
TSH - 1.83 (0.34-5.6)

July 2011 - Saw Endo

Free T4 - 23.02 (9-25)

DHEAS - 1.58 (4.3 - 12.2)
SHBG - 30.1 (15.4 - 63.8)
E2 - 107 ( 28-156)

Doc gave me 90mcg T4 and 10mcg T3. Been taking that ever since and I am feeling probably even worse than before!
LH and FSH are way high compared to tests in February which I don't understand.

Feeling a lot worse than at the start of the year so contemplating stopping Thyroid meds for a while and see what happens.

Endo sent me to have an ultrasound and there they found ( I already knew something was there) a Varicocele on the left side 3.8mm in size.

So I am now confused why all of a sudden LH and FSH levels are so high compared to start of year ,I assume I have had this vein for quite a while. Could this Varicocele be the cause of all my issues and I am taking Thyroid meds unnecessarily and making me feel even worse? I have also been diagnosed with Hashi's. ( could be DHEA-s related)

Had my 1st child last year so had no problems with fertility. I have some pain only if I am sitting badly, also sometimes I get this spontaneous pain in the groin region for a couple of seconds or so but this is very infrequent. Gonads size wise look the same and cannot see any atrophy.

I have a referral for a urologist. So I wanted to ask the question should I pursue the removal of this Varicocele? Could it be the answer to all my problems? Been reading about all the different methods and Embolization is the most appealing to me.

Endo says I am fine and me feeling like crap is all in my head. I was advised to also see a psychiatrist in her summary after I see a Urologist.

Any advice or recommendations or experiences would be appreciated.

Can I do more harm than good getting the embolization procedure or do I have nothing to lose?

Right now I am experiencing cold sweat (feel very hot, and my sweat is cold feeling and feeling absolutely terrible almost like having a very high fever) which makes me think if the thyroid meds are causing this.
The only other logical explanation I can think of is this Varicocele is causing me to go Hypo to cool down, but by me supplementing with T4+T3 it is fighting against the body. So in effect these thyroid meds are causing a much greater issue and I am making it hard for my body. So is there any chance that with this Varicocele I went Hypo purely because of this and falsely think it is my thyroid?

I would like some help with some of the terms that are being used on this thread. What are the following acronyms?

1. TRT
2. HCG.

I.have seen.this.problem.many times. In Dr patients. .Your.getting hypothyroid at the tissue not in the blood. There are.factors which could be happening.

Plain and.simply.your well.(blood) is, but pump is broken (not pumping it to the tissues to.tell.tsh to lower
1 lack of.cortisol which could not.allow the thyroid to.be pushed to.the.tissues
2.low ferritin which can also be responsible for.cellular.deficiency.
3. Candida as there by products.may.disrupt.cellular response.to thyroid . I saw this.in a case with woman i.just had.

Next you.need.to look have these properly evaluated then.before jumping on some.unnecessary.meds.look.to.reason why.
ferritin levels < 100 in males may affect thyroid medication from working properly. I.have seen this.occupancy.many time

blood test for ferritin levels
cortisol saliva 4 point for adrenals function

I would like some help with some of the terms that are being used on this thread. What are the following acronyms?

1. TRT
2. HCG.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin

my suggestion and opinion

Wow.. what an amazing and interesting thread. i have read from page 1 -72 and i recommend doing so to anybody that has varicocele's. i have been diagnosed with bilateral varicocele. i am 24 years old and i started feeling a problem since the age of 17. my stiory starts off by me always being a very athletic guy. i had a girl witch i was with her for 6 years we broke up about 2 - 3 years a go. i remember when i was 17 it would kinda hurt when she suked my right testicle. but never paid any mind to it. so any guys feeling this pain dont just tell your girl suck the other one cuz that one hurts.. check it out it is a problem. i never did. well at around 18- 19 i started useing steroids so never notice pain in testicle as the got small and i felt awsome. i used for 2-3 years on and off. used pct about twice. at age 21 i got into a terrible accident (broke right femure) never used steroids after that. started losing muscle mass. nothing i did every got me back to being completly fit, basically lost all muscle mass. around 4 months ago started have ed and i was like f*** this thats the last draw. been seeking medical advise but no doc really knows whats going on.ive got a varicocele specialist that has told me he will operate if i have a fertility issue. but not for pain. i dunt know i would never take trt unless i see its last choice. my advise for all young guys that what to get big never turn to steroid as the bad side effects are very reall and you will mess your body up!. back to varicocele. i will be planning to get it operated micro surgery if doctor agrees to help. and will get on clomid and also will tkae natraul herbs to rais testosterone. there are many so look up 7 diffrent herbs and take one a day so body dosent get used to the same supplement and will always work when taken. my next thread will be when i getthis surgery done so have faith. my testosterne is 225 and last test was at 345 so its decreasing. i have dull pain on right groing. i also have gyno my endo which says theres npthing i can do exept get on trt sent me to see a surgeon about getting the gyno removed. (at least he did that for me) i hate the u.s heath procedure. they only work if they get all therepersonal bills paid for the month by your personal case. but lets have faith. i can say keep going to like 20 doctors set up alot of oppointments with the endos, urologist's andnuerologist, and every type. there opinions are very helpful to insurance. well ill see what post come up and maby i could help. i would like to thank mega zoid, (its the only one i remember) and there were 3-4 other guys that have kept us posted and have chimed in on us on the post expieriences.

Hi guys,

I have been looking at this thread as I have a varicocele on my left side, and a smaller one on the right. I was diagnosed with this problem about 9 years ago. A testosterone test in about 2008 showed that I had pretty healthy normal levels for my age.

So I read that varicocele can have a progressively damaging effect on testicular function with time and I would be concerned about any damage that may have been done or is being done as I've had the problem.

Surgery scares me because I understand that there is risk of severing the testicular artery as well as no guarantee that the surgery will be effective. I hate to think I might have something done about it only to find that I am in a worse situation than before. I can't afford the premium healthcare that I have read is available in America, at Cornell, for example. I understand that the best approach is Microsurgical Varicocelectomy but that is not, as far as I know, available in the UK, and I don't have very much money, so it is not an option for me. But if I was going to have anybody snipping around in my scrotum, I'd want to use the best, safest techniques.

So anyway, I am hoping to get another blood test done in the new year. I'm in the UK, and our NHS is not so advanced and so the most I got last time was a test for total testosterone and prolactin. What I wondered is which blood tests you would need at a minimum to discern IF the varicocele is having an adverse effect on T production and male health in general. I asked for a total T and free T test last time, but I was only given a total T test. The nurses in the health centre were stumped when I presented myself for the test- it was as if they'd never taken blood for testosterone testing before since they did not know what container to use!

So I appreciate an help and advice you may be able to provide.

Cheers,

Dermot aka Leon

hi guys ...doctor told me that i have starting little varicocele on my left testicle ...i want to ask u ...can i lifting weights? Can my varicocele get worse when i am going to workout? Can it damage my fertility when i am going to workout with varicocele? thx for answers and sry for english.

ive had a left sided varicocele since i can remember and have lifted since i was about 15 (24 now) without any problems. As long as lifting doesnt cause any pain or discomfort you should be fine. As far as varicoceles being caused by lifting or worsened by lifting I cannot answer. Mine has remained the same size the whole time I have lifted so im not sure. I highly doubt working out can damage fertility, reguardless if the person has a varicocele or not.. But having a varicocele can impact fertility, you need a sperm test to verify this.

i think lifting causes my varicocele coz pain starts when i was doing deadlift :/ ...i am sure that i cant do deadlifts anymore ..neither squads :/ but thx for answer dude ;)

20+ years with grade 3 varicocele and I never had pain caused from lifting, but my deadlift only got to 475x3 and squat was no more then 420x5, so maybe when you get heavier it gets worse. What I found caused pain most often was wearing underwear that was not supportive, like boxers.

well i can handle pain...but i dont want to increase my varicocele or damage my fertility with lifting

I don't even care about the pain. If I knew that the thing was not adversely affecting my testicles, or at least not in a significant way, I would be a happy camper and I could accept pain for the rest of my life quite happily.

I am convinced that I caused the varicocele myself through straining with chronic constipation over many years during my late childhood and teenage years. The pressures caused by deadlifting, I am sure, would mimic the effects of extreme straining. I think that we can prevent further damage by being careful about what we eat and what exercise we do. I do a bit of weightlifting just using dumbbells but I watch my body and I listen to what it is telling me. I found that all the binge eating over Christmas made my varicocele worse, particularly stuffing my face with chocolate biscuits.

You should try taking bioflavenoids to strengthen your vein walls and eat plenty of citrus fruits, vegetables, pomegranate juice, cranberry juice, and a whole-foods diet. I eat brown bread and brown rice.

My question would be if a blood test for total testosterone is enough to establish healthy testicular function, or is a free testosterone test also essential? The NHS seem to only offer a total T test, and I don't know how I can have my free T tested. I have no private healthcare and can't afford to use private clinics or whatnot.

The problem isn't vein walls, its defective veins. My varococele was the same size when I was 16 and never lifted as it was when I first started lifting 16 years later, and was still the same size when I was deadlifting close to 500 lbs.

I think the cause of varicocele in any one individual is a unique combination of factors.

In my case, I am convinced it was self-inflicted, because I remember straining and I remember feeling the strain in my scrotum. That's how hard I strained. But I didn't know at the time I was causing harm. None of my three brothers nor my father have varicoceles. I was the only one who struggled with chronic constipation and I'm the only one with this problem. I think the vein valves became damaged and you can't fix damaged valves. But you perhaps can strengthen vein walls so the veins won't stretch any more. Maybe this is junk science, but it is what I am thinking.

I think there is no harm in taking a few safe supplements if it even offers a hope that things won't get any worse.
