Dont know if anyone but myself has been following this story, but in short, Duke University Medical Center 'mixed' up blood types and gave a young girl the wrong set of organs, a second surgery to fix the mistake cost a 17 year old gril her life

Hospital: 'We very much regret these tragic circumstances'

Family spokesman Mack Mahoney visits Jesica Santillan, 17, in the hospital after her second transplant operation.

DURHAM, North Carolina (CNN) -- Doctors at Duke University Hospital declared Jesica Santillan dead at 1:25 p.m. Saturday and removed her from a respirator soon after. The 17 year-old girl had two heart and lung transplants this month, the first of which used organs with the wrong blood type.

"As of approximately 5 p.m., she is no longer on a respirator," a hospital spokeswoman told CNN. Santillan was declared dead by doctors after a series of tests determined she had no brain function, the hospital said in a statement.

"All of us at Duke University Hospital are deeply saddened by this," said Dr. William Fulkerson, chief executive of the hospital. "We want Jesica's family and supporters to know that we share their loss and their grief. We very much regret these tragic circumstances."

Santillan had been clinging to life since shortly after her first transplant February 7, when she was given organs from a donor with an incompatible blood type -- type A, which did not match her O-positive blood -- causing her weakened body to reject them. The hospital has acknowledged that her surgeon, Dr. James Jaggers, erred in not checking the blood type before performing the first transplant, according to The Associated Press.

Another heart and lungs became available, and Santillan underwent her second transplant Thursday.

On Friday, the hospital said the Mexican teen's new heart and lungs were "working well" but that the results of a CAT scan performed at 3 a.m. EST revealed she has experienced "significant swelling and bleeding in her brain, which is life-threatening." Doctors inserted a tube in an attempt to relieve the swelling and repeated tests Saturday morning.

The critically ill teen had been at the center of a dispute pitting Mack Mahoney, Santillan's self-proclaimed godfather, against Duke University Medical Center.

Doctors believe the brain injury was caused by time she spent on heart-lung machines, Mahoney said.

Mahoney maintains that after the unsuccessful transplant, he was forced to battle the hospital's administration because it didn't want unflattering publicity about the error.

He claims the hospital was more concerned about protecting its reputation than trying to find suitable donor organs from a compatible blood group.

The delay damaged Santillan's brain and might have cost her her life, he charged. The administration needed to say it made a mistake "and not let a child lay on life support 10 or 14 days knowing that it's ruining her brain, it's ruining the other organs," he said.

The hospital denies the allegation, saying it did everything possible to correct the error and give Santillan the best possible care.

Doctors had said the second surgery would give the teen a 50 percent chance of survival. Without it, she would die, doctors had said.

Two and half years ago, Mahoney set up a foundation in the girl's behalf after reading a newspaper article about how she needed a transplant because of a heart deformity that kept her lungs from getting oxygen into her blood. He has acted as the family's spokesman because Santillan's parents speak only Spanish.

I have been following this, very sad indeed. Unfortunately everyone has got to CYA, and this girl's death may have been the result. :(

That's really a shame. The poor girl barely got to live a life, and what little chance she had was robbed from her by a hospital concered about their reputation. :(

I have to admit it is very sad. But for a family that got free medical care they sure are mean to the medical staff.

Don't get me wrong. It was a mistake that should have been avoided. But you have to accept the fact that every blue moon mistakes will be made.

What happend was a series of mistakes.. the surgeon that was doing the 1st transplant called to find if they had a set of heart/lungs.. they did but it was the wrong blood type.. supposedly he was told. So he did not check the blood type when the organs came in, mistake 2. Then he proceeded to transplant the wrong organs.. so overall, it was the surgeons mistakes that caused this. The hospital is now talking of putting in at least one other person to check to typing of organs before transplantation.

I could write a paper on this luckily I do not do transplants. This is a serious matter in which someone really fucked up on the checklists. I have been following this story too and it really pisses me off to see that it happened. God what a **** up and at such a high cost. Too pissed to comment anymore.

agree with Dar on this one. sucks balls all around, tragically sad... unfortunately the few unsuccessful instances or mishaps get splooged all over the news for weeks at a time and the (by comparison) much larger numbers of successful, accident free high HIGH risk operations go unnoticed every fuckin day... but no one watched happy news right? (unless it's the 5 second blurb at the end)

nothing good came out of this , such a waste . negative feelings toward hospitals , wasted life, wasted organs, just a total waste.

I'm sure they would have paid every last dollar they had to save her instead of having them **** up. A rather unfortunate story...

true but not the point , they experienced a loss and are lashing out at the persons they percieve responsible

i followed it too and its really sad that this girl got such a bad deal. i agree with mattd...its a series of mistakes that led to this....seems to me both the hospital and surgeon are to blame. but one thing's for sure, nothing will bring her back or ease her folk's grief. such a waste.

Umm first of all, they deserve the free medical care they got for the mistakes that happend. And second, you say that you have to accept the fact that mistakes happen because it didn't happen to you or to any relatives or friends. If it did you wouldn't even say that. Mistakes like this DO happen once in a blue moon, but the people that have to accept it is the hospital, which are responsible for not letting this 'once in a blue moon mistake' happen again.

Very sad for the girl(no questions asked), but the family needs to get booted back quickly. They had the nerve to not let the organs that she recieved go back into the organ donor program to save another life. Laughable. Selfish morons need to go back their own country now and come back legally if they want. They should also be forced to sign organ donors card if they want to come back.
