Topical Ibuprofen Benefits/Risks

Are the risks reduced with topical ibuprofen cream?

This stuff is extremely expensive and very hard to come by. The FDA is putting out warnings against all companies making it (probably because its great stuff and they haven't had a piece of the action yet).

I ordered some for my elbow arthritis. I do not like to use Ibuprofen because of the decreased protein synthesis, liver impairment, and GI-tract issues that occur. Instead I currently use Alflutop, Fish Oil, Cissus, Celadrin, and Glucosamine.

When it really flares up, the only thing that helps is ibuprofen.

I hope to use the topical to dodge any negative affects. What do you guys know about it?
 
I'm not sure about that particular product but I'm skeptical of any Ibuprofen type gels/creams as I had that prescribed a few times when I had bad tendonitis/rsi in my wrist and it didn't ever make a difference to me personally.
 
the only thing i use is Voltaren gel and tabs for my joint pains.. i apply em directy.. it is the only thing that gets me through the rigors of my football season!

I've been considering the same thing for my shoulder and knees.
Would like to see some more info on this too.
 
I use devil's claw extract instead of ibu. Works pretty well up until the point where I get severe inflammation then I use the big Guns of Ibuproferone.
 
the stuff I ordered has 15% USP Ibuprofen, devils claw, lidocaine, and a few other herbs in it. Sounds amazing and the posted customer reviews were 5 stars claiming it worked better than pills.

Ill let you guys know when I recieve it and try it out. This could be the next big thing!
 
Is it dissolved in DMSO or some other medium to transport it across the skin?

Lidocaine (another ingredient you listed) has a topical effect due to the presence of voltage-gated Na+ channels which exist throughout the body, including in the epidermis, and are partially responsible for nociception (pain-transmission).

NSAIDs such as ibuprofen function by inhibiting COX enzymes which do not occur atop the dermis. I cannot think of any reason why an NSAID such as ibuprofen would have a topical effect unless dissolved in a transdermal medium, however I have seen this for sale from certain Japanese distributors, where it is sold as a topical anti-inflammatory cream for the treatment of treatment-resistant acne.
