I've recently been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, that my doctor thinks will need life-long medication to fix... Which I'd rather avoid.
I've been trying all of the things he recommeded, like supplemental Iodine, Selenium etc, but my levels haven't budged. Does anybody have any experience or supplement recommendations for this?

Has your doctor tested levels of TgAb, TPOAb and TRAb?

Obviously without further context, nobody is going to give you decent advice.

What bloods results do you have so far?

Sorry,

TSH-16m U/L
T3-1.8pmol/L
T4-6.8pmol/L
Yeah your TSH is very high, strongly suggest doing follow up testing noted above to determine if Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Your doctor should also order more comprehensive thyroid panel.

Unfortunately with a TSH that elevated, things like selenium, inositol etc is pissing in the wind.

I have another blood test in five weeks time to give the things the doctor recommended time to kick in/start working.
I just wondered if there was another type of, or better, supplement to help me fix this issue.

Hey 👍

I honestly don't think a supplement could fix this tbh. It could improve it but to actually get those thyroid numbers into a good range. Medication would seem your best option.

I have seen some supplements that definitely improve the thyroid. The best one I've seen is the supplement needs thyroid stack. Contains a variety of ingredient that would definitely help.

What puts you off thyroid meds? If your doctor does bring it up he/she might only offer t4 supplementation. Tons of people just can't convert t4 into t3 very efficiently. Anytime I read thyroid stories most people feel best with a combo of t4 + t3. Even just 5mcg of t3 added to a protocol can make someone feel much better. I have heard that dialing in thyroid meds does take time.

Good luck on whatever path you eventually choose 👍

I agree ^ my wife had half her thyroid removed. Did no meds to see if other half would catch up. They were at the bottom of normal and she decided to go on a low dose and she said it made all the difference in the world in how she feels overall. Best of luck though I know lifelong meds is a a hard choice

Yeh that decision to say I need to take a medication for the rest of my life is definitely tough.

Going into my 30's my hormones were always trash. Testosterone always sat in the low 300's and I felt garbage. My doctor was like 'Your fine'. I eventually just self prescribed TRT and made the decision that this is it for life and went for it. Best decision I ever made.

If it gives you your life back though. Definitely go for it. Never feel ashamed or anxious of relying on a medication to balance your life out. 50% of the world does it. If I knew my thyroid was operating at 30% as it should I would be on that medication tomorrow. I would rather swallow a pill and feel good than not take any and feel horrible.

Low dose levothyroxine? What differences were there in how she felt day to day?

I'm not against lifelong medication, I'm already on prescribed TRT and ancillaries for life. It's just that my doctor mentioned a bunch of bad side effects of levothyroxine and why he said that medication would be a last resort.
