The Unofficial Ice Cream thread

Am I the only one here that doesn't like a lot of mix-ins in my ice cream? If I wanted a cookie in my ice cream, I'll just break a cookie into it.

You're not alone. I can appreciate somebody more that can produce a well made base, than somebody that just throws in a bunch of stuff.

I'm taking a chance and going to grab some this weekend. Who knew Kroger would be the one to carry it here.

Kroger has nearly all the unique brands. Their house brand has some amazing flavors as well. Kroger is far and away my fav of the "normal" grocery stores

Yea, I was spoiled with Kroger, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, etc., when I lived in Columbus. Here in Akron we just have Giant Eagle, but at least there is a GE Market District close to me

Totally agree with ratings on GF DCSSC. I loved it and for those cals - unreal!

Since there are no mix-ins the quality should be pretty consistent pint to pint.

7-Eleven GO! Yum Double Cookie Dough Ice Cream

While this 7-eleven offering was not shy on the mix-ins (which I love) the base did not help this pint out. The weak base was a let down from the start, one of the weaker vanilla bean bases I have tried in my time. If they would of spent a bit more flavoring on their base to upgrade to something better like a Ben & Jerry, or a sugary vanilla base like Greater's offers this would be an easy A. The amount of mix-ins started to resemble that of 2nd street where it was loaded. The cookie dough pieces are not as large, but in a greater amount than most pints. From top to bottom this is loaded with chocolate, cookie dough, and a 2-3 pieces of brown sugar cookie dough. For cookie dough lovers this would be worth a scoop, for those who don't really care for cookie dough this is an easy pass.

GNO did you ever review cheese crown from Graeters?

Thinking of scooping mine soon
I bought two pints...
For the 1st pint I had a half at a time which I didn't feel like I got the full experience from. Base was a step above their regular vanilla and the cinnamon crust pieces are great. I didn't really notice much fondant. I'd say B+ and I'm hoping for more mix-ins in the 2nd pint to elevate it to an A.

Hopefully I get more
Mix ins than what I got from Cincy pig tracks

Jelly of your fudge swirl

those both sound awesome... for 80 cals too... who wouldn't want to try that?!

did you actually buy it or just see?

Oh, I bought both. Ate both tubs already

Base is dense for being fat free. Both flavors are great, mix-ins on the brownie sundae are pretty sparse, but the fudge stripe was plentiful.

The toffee caramel bad a ton of toffee bits in it and the caramel stripe was similar to the fudge one in the brownie sundae

Awesome. I'll be looking otu for these now for sure

Steve's Blackberry Crumble

Overall it is a good pint, but did not exceed expectations of Whoopie Pie or Cookie Butter which could be Steve's best offeringins. The Jam had a decent taste to it, but nothing over the top. I would relate the blackberry jam to a blackberry jelly with a very mild flavor. A few bites had a bit of an artificial blackberry taste to it which threw me off. The Cinnamon Oat strusel has a nice cake texture and cinnamon aftertaste, but I also got a bit of a buttery vibe to it. After eating this Pint I would say its good, but not one of Steve's best. I would much rather opt for Jeni's Brambleberry Crisp which has a stronger fruit flavor, and also a denser oat streusel.

Does your whole foods not have:

Gelato Fiasco & McConnells. Steve's or Coolhaus?
I know location plays a huge factor
I did send you over some of the better flavors for those lines.

No GF or McConnels. I have had the Speculoos and the whoopie pie. Wanted to try something new

New Orleans Ice cream owner just sent me an email about sending me these PO Boy's for review. Eager to see how they are compared to other sandwich cookies:

Gelato Fiasco Maple Sap Tap Gelato

Maple Sap Tap was a good pint, but not a great Pint. If I could rescoop some of the previous pints I had in the past I would rank the PB, Almond Butter Chocolate Chunk, Sriracha Peanut, & S'mores a higher grade than this one. The Maple Base did not have enough flavor in it to get an A grade from myself, but the walnut toffee mix-ins really helped raise the overall score of the pint to a degree. With a loaded mix-in pint and a decent base I would probably consider re scooping other flavors off their line before this one. I would not even include this in my top 5 off the Gelato Fiasco Line.

7-Select Toasted S'mores Ice Cream

Invalid Link Removed

Do not sleep on this pint, if you are ever near a 7-11 pick this up instantly. The Graham Cracker base provides a heavy graham cracker flavor and tons of mix-ins with an incredibly creamy base. If you like heavy and thick swirls of marshmallow and fudge with chocolate chips mixed into a perfect graham cracker base you need to look no further. If you like a stronger cinnamon base and less mix-ins Gelato Fiasco may be your cup of tea. If you are looking for a heavy marshmallow base with graham cracker swirls + Chocolate Chips then Wegmans will be your go to S'mores Ice Cream. These would be my top 3 S'mores Ice cream offerings.

I have not tried 7-11 S'mores, but the best S'mores ice cream I had was Lake Effect (from Buffalo). mkretz was nice enough to take me to the scoop shop to grab it.

They use their hot chocolate ice cream as the base with marshmallows and chocolate covered graham pieces. Not a ton of mixins but the stellar base more than compensates for that. I like it better than GF Toasted Marshmallow, NO Mardi Gras and Wegmans S'mores.

Graeter's Cheese Crown

Overall this is a win-win from start to finis.. The unique blend of a cheesecake base, cinnamon pastry pieces, and an icing flake makes this different on the Graeter's line. Not many ice creams offer a cheesecake base, or can provide the richness Graeter's does in their ice cream. Take a new york style cheesecake, add a vanilla icing (icing flakes), and a strong blend of cinnamon sugar pieces like a graham cracker crust. Man this was awesome. Graeter's is known for the signature chocolate chips, but after trying this. They need to invest in more Cheesecake Bases with sweet complimentary mix-ins. Hands down a top 3 flavor next to Buckeye & Cookies and Cream. Black Raspberry may have moved to my #4 overall flavor.

Sorry for your loss. How was the ice cream though?

Stellar. The new select is a very creamy texture and flavor. Compares spot on to legit vanilla ice cream flavoring. And it was extra thick even for a blend. Far and away the thickest of the select flavors. Not sure what's different about the vanilla but it's certainly a bit heavier.

I also added in some chopped pumpkin spice almonds which was an epic combo.

Dude you completely manipulated my comment, I feel so violated lol.

What I wrote was I have not tried 7-11 S'mores, but have tried NO Mardi Gras and Wegmans S'mores. My point was Lake Effect "He Shoots He Smores" was better because of the stellar base.

have you tried Gelato Fiasco S'mores? Similar to 7-11 with the massive GC base. 7-11 just has more swirls than other mix-ins (fudge/marshmallow) which are thick.
If you like a GC base like Gelato Fiasco this will be a huge hit for you.

I did and was a bit disappointed in it. The mixins were mediocre but I did enjoy the base, yes! I will be picking up my share of the Handels haul that my main man mkretz grabbed me a couple of weeks ago.

I can always grab a 7-11 S'mores on the way out of town, but I just have to manage my overall pint inventory because I am anticipating I will have to move for work early in the New Year

Moderation has its limits so I have heard ;)

this is called moderation? clearly you had more than 2 pints within a 48 hour period when you were with Mkretz :)

Another cheat-gasm in Buffalo with mkretz last weekend.

I picked up some donuts in Niagara Falls and got started solo with a strawberry/chocolate cream & donut holes

Main course was sweet and sour pork & General Tso's chicken & a gyro (each).

Mkretz had a burger (chicken I think) and then we each had a slice of homemade pumpkin pie.

We split a tub of Turkey Hill pumpkin pie and made sundaes with caramel sauce, candied pecans & whip cream.

I cracked and only finished half :( the sundae but he finished strong.
Turkey Hill is a quart so thats a pint already

We finished the donuts (above) in the morning. Mkretz had oatmeal with pb and candy bars broken into it.

Post workout we each had stinger subs

And Lake effect 3 scoop sundaes

I got blueberry pie, chicken & waffles and bourbon pecan tart (left).
I can't remember what mkretz got lol

Next meal...
I got a double pig out (bacon cheeseburger)

Mkretz had homemade lasagna & a chicken parm sandwich

We then split a funfetti and pb&j cupcake, a snickers cheesecake bar, turtle torte and pumpkin whoopie pie.

bbartsche needs to get in this too.
GNO .. who says 2 pints a week cant work :)
Certainly not me. I do have 2-3 pints a week.

Since I have like 8 pints at home, 6 waiting for me in Buffalo and plan to get TH pumpkin too I don't want to buy much more unless I have a move date.

Oh and I have a free coupon for BnJ I have to use in Canada by Dec 31.

Handels Tin Lizzy Cheesecake:

Invalid Link Removed

Overall this is a good flavor. After sampling it I knew I had to pick up a pint. Tin Lizzy has Outstanding cheesecake base that is loaded with flavor. The butterscotch ripple is dense in flavor, thick in size, and goes hand in hand with the base. The Butter Pecan Toffee Pieces offer a thick crunchy compliment. The small aftertaste of caramel that corresponds with the butterscotch ripple makes this a killer combination. Cheesecake, Caramel, and Butterscotch if you love these 3 things you need this right away.

Score: B

We might have to do a video series and just have each of us post our day. Not sure we'll be able to all get to the same place. bbartsche where are you located?

He is NJ
We should all start with a 10k challenge, and upload it. Make a series out of it. then bump to 15k, 20k . I think we may have to invest in some OT to afford all of this.
