The New Wave of American Metal

a good band that can appease all here, those who like nu-metal and those who like metal metal is Fear Factory, there new cd is coming out soon. That dudes voice when he sings is totally hypnotic. Him and the guy from Soilwork have the best singing voices I have ever heard. The singer from FF has a side project called Ascenion of the Watchers which is just him and the keyboardist of FF doing new age kinda music, and it still fucken awesome.

FearFactory rocks!! Ive been a huge fan of theirs since Demanufacture...Their last album (Archetype) was awesome - but had the overall feeling that the band was trying to formulate their sound after kicking Dino out. Im looking very foward to 'Transgression'

Thanks for the tip on Ascention of the Watchers, I didnt know that was available. The samples off their website are really cool, Im going to have to pick this one up.

FF is on tour this summer with Megadeth, DreamTheater, and Nevermore - make sure you check out that show!

takes you to two sample from trangression. There definitely heading in a different direction, less double bass, its more melodic and more experimental. I personally think its fucken awesome.

Downloaded demos by the Haunted and some group called NMSO4..I think? Some people label stuff wrong so I'm not real sure if that's their name...anyways both are worth a listen IMO. Good, deeper thrashy stuff.
 
Devildriver's Fury of the maker is great..singer sounds a lot like Coal Chamber which is a big bonus in my book. Good rec Ex!

I like FF a lot too. My favorite album is Obselete...decsent is a bad jam....not too heavy, but not too pansy. :D

I went to ozzfest a few weeks ago, and for the most part it was good I guess...I just wish there wouldve been better headliners. I gotta see if the FF tour is coming to my area, if it is, then I'll be going ot that too, as long as the tickets aren't too pricey.

Yeah, I like them all a lot, but Obsolete has a special place in my hard. My favorite on that album is 'Resurrection'. I remember seeing FF at the Rosland Ballroom in NYC during the Obsololete tour - that was a very memorable show!! Saw them again opeing up for Lamb Of God last year...

Im a big fan of Inflames and Shadow's Fall, but after SF played we left. I felt bad not staying for Maiden and Ozzy, but it was so damn hot out all day we had to get out of there. Plus I wanted to beat the traffic.

Archetype was their best album since, well, their best album Demanufacture. Much heavier than the albums in between as well. This makes kicking Dino out make even less sense, since he is the one who always preferred that they play heavier music and currently plays Death Metal, which is how FF started out anyway. I didn't like Obsolete much, well produced but not heavy enough. Digimortal was a little heavier but had a lot of filler. I saw it as kind of weak when they played New Wave to get mTV to actually take notice of them when mTV was totally ignoring Metal. Come on, "Cars"?

Oh damn, I haven't heard that name in a while! About 15 years ago my band played a show with them. It was a small hardcore show, probably 50 people. I loved Pain of Mind and Word as Law (still do), but their next release, Souls at Zero, lost me. I'll have to check out some of their later stuff.

When I saw them in NYC, they started to play 'Cars' and everyone started booing:)

Sure - some new bands are lame. A lot of newer underground rock/metal is very innovative and is constantly pushing the edge of the genre is terms of melody, technicality, and talent.

most 80', 90's and current rock is garbage...take it back to the late 60's & 70's...when groups like Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd just to name a few ruled

Those bands broke new ground, and developed entirely new ways of writing and experiencing music. Heavy distortion, walls of 4x12 cabinets, etc - all that stuff came out of the 70's and its the foundation that a lot of modern metal is based on. Of course it sounded different and unique - there was nothing like it before then.

I dont think you can compare modern bodybuilding to modern bands, they are two entirely different disciplines and methods of thought. Sure, some aspects are related - like the dedication and practice it takes to excel in each area, but that's about where the similarites end.

Im sure if you actually listened to some of these 'new' bands you can't stand you'd find something you'd like musically. Seriously though..10 years from now and for sure 20 years from now I doubt anyone will remember all these new bands..but bands like Zeppelin and Floyd and Hendrix ...they will be talked about a century from now.

They were of various ages, irritated because FF was playing a cover of a song that had nothing to do with their normal sound - it was done to basically get airplay. It was a good cover - but not a FF song for sure.

They werent booing because the music sucked - they were boing because the song they were about to play wasnt heavy enough...lol. Have you heard of Fear Factory before? You would know exactly what I was talking about in that statement if you did.:D

Ummm...if you listened to a lot of these 'screamer' bands you'd find that the lyrics arent really paralleled with gangsta rap:)

Some bands will be remembered and some will be forgotten. Zepplelin, Floyd,Rush etc, will always be remembered because they were the innovators. There were a lot of great rock bands in the 70's that many have sadly forgotton - Steppenwolf, Grand Funk - you'd be hard pressed to find a kid today that knows who they are. Dosent mean they sucked now, does it?

Seriously though - to each his own. Death-metal type music isnt for everybody. A lot of people can't get passed the 'screaming' and blast beat drumming, etc. But just because you dont 'get it' doesn't mean it's bad music!

Hell, I can't stand country music, but I dont trash it. There's definitely something to it that attracts so many fans, but I dont get it what it is:)

Make sure to also check out some HED PE...I'm sure some of you guys have heard of them...they can tear it up, although they're kinda in a different metal "category."
 
you're right....the gangsta rap is usually about the streets and money and how big the black guys joint is and the white hoes...the death metal is usually about some devil **** or getting even or killing someone's ass or dropping a girlfriend...boo fockin hoo...all negative crap..and that's if you can understand it to begin with...Rap is just as difficult to understand as is the deep devil growling in death metal.

Well...really either genre (rap or metal) isnt 'mostly' about the things you describe. Im not a huge hip-hop fan but I do appreciate and enjoy listening to some of it. A lot of that music is written by people who are just as passionate about what they do as the guys who write and play our precious death-metal. Or your revered classic rock. Music is great because its a form of expression, and some people understand what the artist is saying and latch onto that. Others dont understand so they hate it because they can't connect to it.

Having a myriad of diverse genres also greatly contributes to the music you listen to. As a musican myself, Im influenced by the things I hear and experience everyday. Whose to say that a particular vibe from a rap tune or a melodic phrase in a country-solo wont be the seed for the next great metal epic? You never know - and that's why its important that even if you hate something, you at least respect it as a form of artistic impression and don't try to impose your thoughts on others.

As far as death metal being oranges or apples compared to classic rock...yes they're different genres of rock..but all of it originated from one era and now it's all just modified and copied and mostly unoriginal material.

Can we get back to band recomendations? :) This thread has been a big help to me lately. My only other source has been the Roadrunner Records website and Uranium. I just don't have many friends into metal right now.

Check out the new Trivium CD, 'Acendency' - freaking incredible. That's all I can say - one of the best metal CD's to have come out in a while.

Speaking of Death Metal, Vital Remains - Dechristianize is an amazing album. Pure brutality mixed with technical virtuosity. I swear Trivium lifted one of the melodies on Ascendancy from VR. (A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation/Rush of Deliverance)
 
Yeah, Trivium is just another in the dozens of examples of why I respect RR records so much. It seems they have grabbed most of the decent up and coming metal acts for the past, decade or so. I don't get their signing of Nickelback, though.

I was jamming to 36 Crazyfists' "A Snow Capped Romance" for a while there. It's about a year old and I think it's a good cd.

There is a new Clutch CD out and I listened to it once. Gotta say that it is not a favorite. I can dig their constantly doing new things and their straying away from a hardcore past, but "Robot Hive" is way too jam-bandish for me. Sad, because C! is my favorite band and may be overtaken by Soulfly in October when "Dark Ages" comes out. I don't know if there is a Soulfly album I havent enjoyed.
 
Yeah, I like Clutch a lot too! I only have their first 2 albums - but 'SpaceGrass' has to be one of my favorite songs ever:) I saw them live last year and they were really good, I dug a lot of the newer stuff they played.

Yeah, it took me a long time to be able to find harmony in the discord and chaos of death and black metal.

On a similar note, most of the highly lauded artists in any medium (particularly writing though) went unappreciated in their day, only to find immortality in the timelessness of their creation. The artists who garnered immediate popularity are all long since forgotten.,
 
Sorry for being late to the party, I can't believe I just found this thread. I don't think I saw anybody mention Throwdown. I have their new one "Vandetta" and its off the hook. Has anybody heard of Winter Solstice or listened to the record? I saw it in a record store and it features a track with the vocalist from As I Lay Dying. I believe it is on Metal Blade. I can't believe the consistant quality of music they are putting out right now.

Im really digging Def Leppard lately, I love High N' Dry, Pyromania, Hysteria. I can see why they were one of the biggest bands in the world. They are awesome, just all great musicians.

First thing I have to say is...For those who think they like Shadows Fall or Killswitch Engage, have you ever heard Overcast? That is Brian and Mike's band before the two current bands, and Overcast is probably my favorite band of all time. Seriously...if you think you LIKE SF or KE, you will LOVE Overcast! I'd highly recommend dropping everything you are doing right this moment and searching eBay for anything you can find by them, trust me you will NOT be disappointed!!!

OK some of you may know me from other boards, no offense to this board but I only have so much free time to read forums and I just have not had much time to spend exploring Anabolic Minds...well those who know me don't know much about the music side of me...AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...that I am a bassist seeking a band!!! I admit I have not played much in the last year due to my old band breaking up, and I sold my Mesa Boogie gear, but I still have my axe and a decent amp, plus all my effects left over. I live in central Massachusetts and due to military assignment would not be able to travel far for practice...BUT...you will never find a more enthusiastic musician than me!!! My girlfriend also happends to be a photographer for REVOLVER magazine, so any band lucky enough to have me in it will have guaranteed lots of publicity! I have been playing for 16 years and was raised in the music business in the Boston area, so I have lots of contacts even through my mom (now how many metalheads can say that...my mom's real cool, she's retired but still rockin'), and I have actually played in some bands that went on to become big.

I am into all kinds of stuff, hardcore, metal, industrial, etc.

To name things I listen to at least weekly, if not daily: Misfits, Poison, Jag Panzer, Motley Crue, GnR, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Ministry, Slayer, Black Flag, Mindless Self Indulgence, etc etc etc.

The newest bands I am listening to (have to plug them because they are cool) are Beautiful Creatures and Throwdown.
There, that's my intro, now time to read this whole thread to see what I missed...............
 
OK for those of you mentioning Vital Remains...is that the same Vital Remains that's from Rhode Island? I am not really into that vein of metal right now so I don't follow that band, but there used to be a pretty good bunch of fellows from RI called Vital Remains, maybe 8 or 10 years ago.

Any of you into Type O Negative? They've been one of my favorite bands for years - every album is unique but still has that signature sound. I live in NY state, where Autumn is the best time of year, and nothing beats driving around in late october cranking Type O...

Check out Carnivore, Type O negative was founded by the same guys, has a slightly edgier, more sardonic touch to it, with songs like "jesus hitler".

I guess they (TON) have a new album coming out early next year, Im looking foward to it. Their last one, Life is Killing Me, was excellent. Peter Steele is going to be playing a vampire in an upcoming film. (can't imagine anyone better for that role:))

Im listening to Mastodon's 'Leviathan' right now, its pretty bad ass...very progressive and wicked heavy at the same time.

Just picked up the new Opeth 'Ghost Reveries'...this is a must have.

I heard the new one from As I Lay Dying and I have to say it is definitely going in my Mp3 player for the gym. I can see my bench going up on this stuff:)

Lately I've been listening to a lot of Behemoth and Belphegor. In particular, Belphegor's album goatreich-fleshcult is one of the best death metal albums I've ever heard...
 
Thanks for the tip exnihilio...Behemoth is definitely one hell of a band. Did you read the liner notes? Those guys actually go around and attempt to summon ancient gods and whatnot. From the sounds of their music I think they succeeded;)

Lately I just can't get enough of The Old Dead Tree's latest album "The Perpetual Motion". This is a masterful progressive/death release right up there with the best from Opeth, Katatonia, etc. This is a rich, atmospheric album which is dripping with finely crafted melodies, melacholic in places yet breathtaking in it's positive vibe in others. Two thumbs up Plus+++ for this album!
 
Another recent favorite of mine is "Orgia Daemonicum" from Thou Art Lord. Thou Art Lord is a black/death/thrash hybrid, which to my ears sounds very similar to Rotting Christ's later releases, (hauntingly dark melodies, raspy vocals) with hints of Morbid Angel (rolling riffs and rhythm section) thrown in for good measure. Overall result is some seriously evil death metal.
 
Last but certainly not least is Norther's latest release "Till Death Unites Us". Anybody who enjoys Children of Bodom should seriously check this band out. They play kickass melodic death metal to near perfection. Twin guitar melodies shred start to finish, and the album contains a great mix of growls and clean vocals, which is a bit of a change for Norther. Very accessible, insanely catchy, and satisfyingly heavy makes for a great workout album in my books.
