The Death Metal Thread

Just moved to Payson with my new wife. Lived in Tempe last, San Tan Valley, Chandler, and Gilbert. I get bored in one place too easily.

After the Burial's newest disc Wolves Within is solid for those that can stomach some djenty deathcore.

Pretty damned solid. Kinda puts me in mind of a hybrid between older Winds of Plague and All Shall Perish.

Another one that I've become fond of lately is The Dialectic. The vocalist reminds me a bit of Phil-bo before he started giving up on growl diversity.

Lol well dude I go to shows alone because nobody else listens to death metal. I'm hitting you up next show brother. Lol

Really wish I was going to the Origin show tonight at Joe's Grotto

AtB was solid. I'm definitely more into the traditional and brutal death metal but can appreciate some Deathcore. They were much better than Carnifex in that department in my opinion.

Revocation was fair, a bit let down. But you know who absolutely killed it behind Suffocation, Krisiun. Those dudes destroyed!!

Suffocation can't dissapoint. Never a doubt there. I was worried about Rev since they put out IMO the biggest letdown in 9 years, 'Deathless'. What a pos compared to their last 3 great albums. Carnifex, maybe I'm watered down, but I like metal I can remember, not necessarily due to poppiness or catchiness but just along the lines of Black Dahlia or All Shall Perish. I never go "oooooh, I'm craving that one Carnifex song", but I constantly do that with the other 2 bands. I guess I do side more on the 'core' side than super-traditional , but I still love all of the best, Carcass Surgical Steel and At the Gates Slaughter of the Soul come to mind.

And I would hit a show up bro. I have literally 2 friends that listen to metal and I'm almost 38. One of em would rather just hit a Periphery show and I can't see Veil of Maya anymore if they play one more shytty new song I'm gonna puke.

Yeah buddy!!

Saw Black Dahlia back in May with Disentomb and Fallujah. Also awesome show. Tiny venue though. Like super small for Black Dahlia

Saw em at the Nile with 80 people right after they put out Abysmal I think. They have never released one note of music I haven't totally adored. Almost caught that show too. ?

38 here too bro!! Seriously don't be surprised when I hit you up. Quick drive down from Payson!!

If you miss Phil's growls, check out his new project Scour.

Also Bloodbath's "The Fathomless Mastery." The production makes it sound as if it was recorded in the late seventies and is some abhorrent death metal relic from a bygone age.

Ahhh, my mistake, hah. Check out Scour anyway, they're ridiculous.

Been on a big kick of Origin's "Antithesis" lately. That album never fails to drop my jaw.

I had never heard of Scour before your mentioning it here, so I was listening to them before I saw a picture and realized which Phil you meant. Honestly, it shocked the hell out of me that it was either of them, given how the growls/screams sounded.

Gonna check out that Origin album now.

Hey, I appreciate you giving them a listen. I'll freely admit I'm a fanboy of Anselmo's music, from Down to Superjoint to this. He's done quite a bit for heavy music and I make it a point to check out all his projects.

Origin is a tech death band from Kansas who's premise is essentially that humanity is a tiny spot of dimming light in an infinitely dark and malicious universe, and that death is swiftly coming from above. Their technicality always serves their songs, in you opinion, which is rare in this kind of music.

I'm liking what I am hearing from both thus far.

Something that is almost a bit outside of the scope of this thread, but your description of Origin reminded me of: Mechina, an industrial death metal band who's entire discography (save their first two albums) is a long running career concept of the dystopian variety. It gets pretty damned convoluted, and doesn't necessarily run in chronological order, but there's a wiki in which a guy is trying to break it all down and grasp it all. Since I can't post a link, you can just Google Mechina wiki, and it's the first link.

Plus, their artwork is pretty badass.

Hails, I'll check them out right now!

I miss the James Lee Origin. Antithesis is the pinnacle of their albums for sure.

If you like Origin, check out Omnihility from Eugene, Oregon.

I certainly appreciate Omnihility for their ability, but I've got trouble with the modern clinical production, hah. Definitely a great band, just tough for me to listen to them on record. I'd like to see them live, I bet they slay.

Somewhat agree. Their first release was a little dirtier, less polished production. And my favorite by far. But have been spinning the new disc lately and each time appreciate it more and more.

Yeah, was just listening to them. My buddy and I have a collaborative Spotify playlist that we both throw a ****ton of metal on, and he added some of their stuff. I like them.

There are a couple of metal sites I check almost daily, one is Angrymetalguy.com and the other is Yourlastrites.com. Some excellent writers on both sites, and they keep me in touch with new releases. AMG recently had a retrospective piece on Cryptopsy's "None So Vile" and I consequently rediscovered an old favorite, hah.

Man, I had forgotten all about Cryptopsy. Have they even released anything in recent years? I assume so, and that they just fell off of my radar.

They released an EP about a year ago called "Book of Suffering - Tome One" that I honestly think is the best thing they've done in years. It's concise, relentless, and vicious. Worth checking out, IMO.

I'm a fan of EPs in this line of music, as forty minutes of pummeling can get old, but fifteen can leave you craving more, you know?

I thought their self titled Cryptopsy a few years ago was a return to form as well.

Cool band I've been digging for a couple years out of the Baltimore area, Inhumation. They have 2 EP releases. Self-titled and Verdant Decay. Good groovy death metal

Checking them out today.

In the meantime, for this back sesh, " Disposal of the Dead" by Defeated Sanity.

Dude, just bought it on BigCartel literally before clicking back to AM. Pretty stoked for this and Unfathomable Ruination's new release.

YES. This band is crushing. I could listen to the drummer alone all day. Throwing Unfathomable Ruination onto my look into list.

Just a bunch of crappy noise LOL

Some more spacey indecipherable noise...

I'm not all that into Slam, but this album is so unique.

Listening to the Idiosyncratic Chaos EP by Unfathomable Ruination and I am digging the hell out of it.

Dude, you have no idea how happy that makes me LOL. So rare to actually find someone who digs the same music. I know he's taking a break from the forum, but when he comes back Hastur needs to find this thread.

Couple tunes that came through the shuffle this morning at the gym that I thought were worth a share...
