TGR's Modified PowerBuilding v2.0

Lol. I have to deadlift on a carpet for footing at my gym. Im sure a bear rug would suffice for ya reg.

I have to bring my own mini rug for deadlifts so that no speckles of non-transferable chalk or baby powder fall from my hands/quads.

Serious.

Lol. Im just imagining you carrying your own rug into the gym everyday deadlift day. Ive heard about some old school powerlifter that used to bring his own deadlift bar into the gym on deadlift day, so i guess it's not that bad.

I've thought about buying and bringing my own bar in. It's funny to imagine, but not so much if it's a necessity.

Agreed. I just think it'd be funny seeing someone roll up to the commercial gym check in desk with a deadlift bar in their hands. But, if ya gotta do it, ya gotta do it. I'd consider it too if i still trained at LA Fit. Thank god i dont though.

Haha yeah I might have too at some point. I'm currently limited to 1/5 bars for squats and deadlifts.. Bull****. Supposedly putting weight on a bar bends it..

Lol. Do they just have the bars there to look pretty or what? What people do with the other 4 bars is the real question though.

Serious.

you could try liquid chalk, there's no mess with that stuff and it works just as well

That's what I use. It leaves slight traces behind. The baby powder now makes most of the mess. Again though, it's not a lot. Just enough for the a-holes to say something.

When I used to go to a commercial gym I was told the same thing. Anything over two plates a side bends their bars.
Talking to management he said they buy the cheapest bars so they aren't made or safe to load with any real weight! I said I would think the lawsuit liability of a bar bending/breaking would outweigh the cost of quality bars. Apparently they didn't agree as they didn't change the bars.

That's ridiculous. What're they using PVC painted pipes as bars? That's a seriously flimsy bar if 225 bends it

Reg, have you tried grrrip yet? I switched to this stuff called hand armor.. Decent, better than the brad liquid chalk, I think. I usually get four sets (4-9 reps) before I have to even think about reapplying the chalk.

When I went a few times to LA Fitness a few months ago their bars were like that. Felt flimsy and bounced with only bar + 200. I have to give my gun credit. They don't have amazing specialty bars, but they do have bars adequate for squatting and deadlifting. At least at my current level.

You recommended that to me a while back. I have a full bottle I haven't used yet; was waiting on my current stuff to run out. I gave it away this week, so I'll be using grrrip here soon.

Speaking of painted PVC, the local used sporting goods store paints their bars with thick gloss black paint. It's hard to hold a bar with no weight.

Those cheap bars mess me up on bench press. If my gym had flimsy bars I'd carry my own in. I've got an old 1950's York and I think it weighs 55lbs. I've had 700lbs on it before for rack pulls and she still didn't really flex!

When I was traveling for the holidays I went into a local gym to get a squat session in. It was later on a Sunday and pretty slow in there so the desk gal let me have at it for free. Turned out all of the bars were identical and had no knurling in the center. I squatted up to a 455 single and did a bunch of back off work, and that bar was cashed afterwards. Embarrassingly flimsy. What amazes me is none of the other bars in that gym were bent yet.

Commercial gyms really don't have very many serious lifters sadly! Out of the 8 years I've been at my gym...I've only seen a handful. Now, there are plenty that will quarter squat 225-315 for 3-4 sets as well as quarter benching 225. Don't usually see much more than that. I enjoy watching and learning from the few I've seen though! Would really love to train/learn at a real gym with more serious lifters.

You know you're in a bit of a hotspot! Go try it out sometime.

I bet Monday morning the gym goers were talking about how someone abused the bar. How are they to bench 185 with a bent bar!! Luckily I go to a pretty good gym. I can't complain as the equipment is pretty good and they do maint on everything.

We have a few that compete. The owners compete too. So it's pretty good at the one I go to. Not powerlifting competition but at least BB. Although one of the owners has gotten more into PL but does his training for it at a buddy's.

We have lots of Bb competitors. I guess that's why our equipment is pretty ok, and also why they hate chalk and such.

BB use chalk too...lol We have a few that squat in the 5-600 range. Deadlift 6-700. At least based on the 1000 plus club board. Although they don't workout when I'm in there I have seen the remnants of the chalk and recognize their names as ones that compete.
I think some gyms hate chalk because people don't clean up after themselves and then it ends up on the benches and equipment.
You go to a large gym with lots of members so I could see a bunch of those yuppies complaining. I bet the gym I go to only has 100 or so members. Maybe 200 since they have a separate building for aerobics and tanning etc.

It's true. My gym is right in the middle of yuppie central.

I'm behind on logs but still lurking.

Wife has been in bed sick since lunch yesterday and I threw up right after laying down.

This might become an interesting week.

I didn't have time for SLDL. In hindsight I should've lowered the weight on squats and lessened my rest time. May not have work, I was winded more than hindered by strength. I ain't no Liftandswim, for sure

I forgot how hard it was to squat after leg curl volume, however, I also remember how well they warm you up.

Thanks y'all, I did rest in between sets.

Damn! Hard and heavy out of the gate!
Squats of 10 with 315 and then more sets! Great volume.
No wonder you needed to catch your breath!

On a side note of resting and intensity I have been starting to play with heart rate as a gauge. After a set taking as long as it takes to get heart rate down to whatever rate you feel makes you ready for the next set. The duration of time that takes goes down as fitness goes up.
Playing with this idea now. Don't know if this sort of thing is of interest to you.

Agree 100% on HR. A year of limited volume has me huffing and puffing.

It would probably help to back down my Stimul8 as well.

Gonna be good for me regardless.

Your squats though! 315 for 10 is excellent.

6 minute rest? Did you bring a pillow and blanky too...lol
Just kidding man!!

For someone who had stomach issues last night that is one heckuva dedicated workout there!
A little HiiT would take care of the huffing and puffing some. I noticed I get winded a little easier myself...

Thanks man. Yeah, 6 min on the last one. That includes attempting to unrack but having to reset because the bar was lopsided.

I need some HIIT in my life for sure. Plan is to add cardio if i have time.

Before I started doing high volume stuff I sucked at anything over 5 reps. Now I'm doing pretty good. It's just something to get used too.

Yeah, time just seems to be such a premium any more. Good luck finding some time!

Hell yeah man! Nice session. And i hear ya on getting out of shape. Like i mentioned in my log, I'm winded after a hard set of 5 these days lol. Pretty sad

Edit: and oh yeah, pretty ballsy of you to go in for leg day with the potential of the stomach bug hitting you in the middle of it. Living dangerously eh

Dude I feel you on the squats. Had rep squat on Cube other day and it called for 335 for 3 sets of 8, beltless. Then 4-5 backup sets of pauses and fronts after, then some hams and abs. The exhaustion was real.

But what doesn't kill you...

I slept like a rock last night. The torrential downpour almost kept me in bed but I'm up.

Walking is going to be hard this afternoon and tomorrow. I'm already feeling it.
