Good ol' caffeine informer, haha. Absolutely - poor reporting IMO. The way something is written completely alters the impact, but knowing that Energy Drinks actually spike BP higher than caffeine alone is cause for concern (at least to those susceptible)
so...if it had been chugging a quart of jack that killed him would the conversation be different?
n
who isn't an idiot when they are a teenager?
lots of stuff I did as a teen I would not even consider today!!!
it is not the governments job to regulate things because a teenager might abuse them, imo. if so they should start with drivers license's.
Yes, this interesting to me and I did not know about that study. Wonder what exactly causes it as usually they us Tyrosine, Taurine and gluconaurolactone which are all fairly reasonable compounds.
Well, if it was a quart of Jack that killed him it wouldn't even be "news". It would be accepted as stupid and maybe not even tragic. In this case, the kid wasn't even being stupid IMO. He was well within the safe limits of consumption. Heavy consumption? Sure. Deadly stupid? Not by a long shot. That is what makes it tragic.
What makes it more tragic is the news reporting jumping on caffeine and acting like that is the reason and they are doing everyone a huge favor by making us stupid people aware of the dangers of caffeine. Only, nobody died from caffeine alone here, I almost guarantee it...and if they were actually concerned about helping someone else avoid a similar outcome they wouldn't blame caffeine when another outcome, like what jigzz pointed out, is far more reasonable and likely.
But this is just, "look at this substance that all you stupid people take every day and think nothing of. Look how deadly it is!"
And if they repeat this lie in enough articles, it will become truth.
I wasn't an idiot as a teenager, quite the contrary. I knew EVERYTHING. I wish I knew today half as much as I thought I knew then.
And you are right, the government needs to stop trying to regulate stupidity.
actually I bought a 4 pack of redline at kroger's just last week, they require you to be 18 to purchase.
A large McDonald's iced latte has: 178mgsI'm sure people have realized this, but that can't be over 400mg of caffeine. I'd even go so far as to guess that it's less than 300mg. Unfortunately this will make a lot of people freak, as it should because death isn't something to be taken lightly, but labelling caffeine the enemy as a result of something like this is really just ignorant
A large McDonald's iced latte has: 178mgs
20 oz mnt dew: 90 mgs
Original 16 oz rockstar: 160 mgs
Total: 428mgs aprx
I chose the rockstar because it's very common it may have been something more potent though.
I have no problem with an age requirement, don't really care either way right now, but I don't think that a problem to refuse stuff like that to someone under 18.
I wish we had more info... The article from CNN only said it was a McDonald's latte a mountain dew and a energy drink. I just went with the worst case scenario for the latte, and I thought that a original rockstar was a good choice because they are common.
I have 400mgs before noon lolI feel ya, thanks for doing the research. But even at the worse case scenario of ~400mg, most of us on here do that on a regular basis. To say that caffeine is to blame is like blaming DMAA for the deaths of the soldiers who were taking way over the recommended dosage. A normal person under normal circumstances has no reason to fear dying if they take this amount of caffeine
I've been buying rock star monster refill etc in Idaho since 8th grade
I've been using caffeine heavily since 13. As someone who has dealt with a lot of things, it has helped me immensely. I also got a prescription for adderall last october, which has changed my life for the better.
Adderall is WAY stronger as a stim than caffeine (although a lot of the time it stims me out but calms me down and sets my mind at ease). I still use caffeine. For example, today I had my 25mg adderall with a scoop of bloodshr3d on an empty stomach. Then helped my dad with some work on my house outside for about an hour, and took half of a redline as a preworkout. About 4-5 hours after my workout I had my second scoop of bloodshr3d. This exceeds this boys caffeine intake and I mixed it with adderall. Not a single side effect, no jitters, palpitations, nothing. That is an average day for me and has been for the last 6 months. Before I got this script, I was downing anywhere from 500mg-1g caffeine depending on my workload at school/work. I've even gone as high as 1.3g (spread throughout 12 hours. Not at once), and never had an issue. There has to be more to the story than what is said here. I may be an anomaly in my stim intake, but I know many that would pop 40-60mg adderall with a monster and were fine(although I think that's too much). It just blows my mind. It really sucks that this boy had his life taken so early, but honestly, how could this be the sole cause?
Definitely something underlying with his heart or nervous system. I consume around 500mg+ caffeine over the course of 2 hours before the gym. Not to mention the ~1200mg throughout the day with other stims.
That's what my co-workers keep telling me...You're going to die.
did you have any of the tingling sensation or nausea from the 1.3 gram dose, i will never go upto the dose i did previously over 1 gram and it feels like **** for me.
Surprised no one said this yet (or I missed it, sorry): The Coroner could be an idiot. How many Investigative programs have been on over the years, showing some Coroners to be complete, slack-a$$, lazy, morons?
Well, that could be the case, but the journalism stands out quite a bit
I think, if the coroner is blaming ONLY 400-600 mg of caffeine for the death of a teenage boy, then you are probably 100% right. He may as well say he drank too much water and died from that...since too much water can kill you too, and since we're not going to pay attention to lethal doses, toxicological data, etc.
I used to enjoy many highly caffeinated pre-workout drinks through out the years however, I am now 43 and I can measure the difference in my BP and reduced anxiety when give up caffeine completely, I have been caffeine free for a while now, I definatly miss the feeling or "buzz" but my workout are the same with a caffeine free pre-workout like Megatron by S.A.N. If you have borderline high blood pressure giving up stimulants is very important unless you want to go on BP meds.
c'mon now, look at you getting all scientific....here in Indiana you don't even need to be a MD to be coroner, it is an elected office and anyone can run.
no medical background of any kind is required!!!
