SQUATS and DEADLIFTS makes hips thicker??!! WTF

Hello all. A respectable bodybuilding enthusiast friend of mines that's in the fitness industry told me that he purposely avoid squats and deadlifts (even though his form is perfect and he's strong as hell ) because those hip dominant lifts make your hip muscles hypertrophy. This would ultimately affect the "taper" when you go on stage. Is there any truth to this? I mean, I've been doing squats and deadlifts for years because they are so fun. When I look at myself in the mirror, I do realize that I do not have a slim hip whatsoever (kind of thick actually). Could that be the cause? F.Y.I. I'll still continue to squat and deadlift forever; just curious on this topic. Help would be appreciated. Thank you all.

Interesting. Not sure if I could ever give up squats or deads though regardless. I would imagine if there was any difference it would have to be minimal and over such a long period of time... Hopefully some much smarter guys than myself chime in.

Look at dudes like dexter Jackson and Ronny Coleman. Both had tiny ass waists. There's always a huge debate to it I guess it is up to you to decide if you believe it or not.

Sounds kinda like what Vince Gironda used to advocate. Squats cause turnip thighs. Whatever!?
Sure working an area will most likely beef up the muscles, but it may depend on your build also. See Casey Viator as opposed to Mike Mentzer.
If you are looking for simple aesthetics and the perfect Zane waspy build, I guess you can watch your progress on them, but I would also guess the vast majority of guys will just look better using squats & dead etc. etc. with a well developed all round physique and just keeping the waist in line with the other body ratios.
ie: I would much rather have a huge DL or even squat, than worry about my big hips, but that is just me. YMMV

I don't know if 'hips' is the correct term. I notice squatting and deadlifting heavy that my abdominals/obliques get stronger and a little thicker, maybe making the waist appear a little thicker above the hips, but the actual width of your hip bones doesn't increase unless you're taking significant levels of GH.

I think a lot of it does have to do with genetics, though. I'm squatting/deading just under 2.5xBW and my waist is never over 30 inches even when I'm eating a large surplus in the offseason. Last time I competed it was about 27.

I don't think it should really be an issue when it comes to the v-taper come competition time. Unless you're one of the few who can get away with it, training above 90% within a few weeks from a show isn't a great idea, so I wouldn't be concerned.

I trained and strong and shapely in Nj for many years. Lots of bodybuilding competitors, they may not have squatted heavy and deadlifted at that point in their careers, but most did at some point when they were putting the size on. Was friendly with one of the national level amateurs and we were squatting one day and he unracked 505 and buried a set of 15.
