Soy Raises Estrogen? Research Says Otherwise

Soy has been a hot topic for years. Some claim it messes with hormones, while others say it’s packed with health benefits. But what does the science actually say about soy raising estrogen?

I know one thing is for sure: gym rats and bodybuilders have been steering clear of anything soy for many years now. In fact, we have been avoiding it like the plague in fear of increasing estrogen levels.

A new study, partially funded by the United Soybean Board, suggests that soy doesn’t act like estrogen in the body. Instead, its bioactive compounds have tissue-specific effects.

I guess that’s good news, right?

this part sorta cracked me up. I don't remember the details anymore largely because I don't care enough to look it up anymore but IIRC studies did a 180 on soys effect on estrogen about the time soy became the #2 cash crop in America. interesting coincidence.

I looked through the research and it appears that the various trials were related to women only. This would be a lot more useful to me if these studies also included men as well.

Maybe even more useful if they weren't funded by the soybean company

Sorry to break it to you but your wrong

I take 2 tbsp soy lecethin extract because of its high phospholipid content and have never noticed anything with gyno or high estrogen. My test levels are 710ng/dl as a natural and my estrogen is 26x lower than that. I take soy because I have gallbladder issues and it helps fat digestion.

If anything the phospholipids found in lecethin products that’s a food additive in a lot of foods (for fat emulsifying) helps maintain healthy testosterone levels.

If you eat a significant amount of soy every day it may be a different story, but if you don’t then continue eating soy. It’s really nothing bad and it’s very healthy for you.

the answer most likely, like everything, lies in the middle somewhere. Japan consumes possibly the most soy in the world, also has one of the highest rates of dementia, and some studies have linked soy to dementia. However other studies have linked soy to lower dementia. Add to that Japan the fact that Japan has the most centenarians and you get even murkier waters on the dementia scenario.

The fact that soy has been (seemingly) a net positive for you, doesn't mean that it is for everyone. But it also doesn't mean that it's a negative for everyone else or that it's causing dementia among the aging Japanese. I think the main idea here that people have rightfully pointed out is that soy was linked to negative side effects for years until it became the #2 cash crop in the States and now soy bean backed studies indicate that it's perfectly healthy. Maybe that's true, however people are not wrong for questioning the legitmacy of biased studies.

I'm curious how I'm wrong when the only thing I said was maybe it would be a more useful study if it wasn't funded by the soybean company. Which isn't wrong. But regardless, Not a single thing in your post has anything to do with anything I said.

So please tell me what I got wrong.

Do you happen to know what part of his post has anything to do with what I said? Am I missing something?

There's potential for a conflict of interest but it's not a given that every industry funded study is automatically bogus.
Another thing I didn't say. I said it MAYBE EVEN MORE USEFUL if it wasn't funded by the soybean company. The two of you are implying what you assume I'm implying.

And whether or not that may be the case......

If you're always looking for something to be angry about, you'll always find it.

Have a nice day fellas;)

I didnt mean to offend you, Im not sure why you got so defensive. Sorry about that.

From what I understood some of you guys were heavily insinuating that Soy is bad for you and that it raises estrogen, and that the soy industry has a chokehold on these studies and sponsors them. all I did was try to prove thats not true. For example Jeremy said the soy boy lobby was funding the studies when thats not true for a lot of them.

You said that it would be better if the studies werent funded by soybean companies and I replied with proof that a lot of them arent, which is perfectly relevant. Almost everything in my reply was completely relevant to the topic at hand. I think what I said is perfectly relevant, it wasnt only targeted towards you, but also other readers in this sub.

I really dont know why your so defensive about it, everything that I said was pretty relevant. Im not trying to offend you.

My sleep hasnt been the best so I have been running on autopilot a bit and probably could have said what I was trying to say differently. Again, sorry about that.

Im honestly not even sure what your trying to say. Max was just trying to be helpful, you really need to stop taking so much offense to this stuff. You may not be saying it but your implying it. None of us are one bit angry at all. Have a nice day too.

I'm not being defensive at all, I made a simple comment in a thread and my comment was 100% correct, a study funded by a uninvested party maybe more valuable then one funded by invested party. I said nothing more and nothing less and then you just told me your life story about how you react to soybean products which has nothing to do with anything I said. I never once said the study was useless or bogus.

So I'm not sure what you're going on about in the first place?

Interesting studies, I’ll read more into them later. Like I said in an earlier message. I’m not saying theres absolutely nothing wrong with soy, anything that’s healthy could be unhealthy when over consumed. I’m simply saying in regular amounts, soy has little to no harm on the body and endocrinology.

In that study it claims that “excessive” soy intake can lower testosterone, I never disagreed with that.

I never said anything about soy and Alzheimer’s, never even heard of either of those things being connected. In that study it also doesn’t make any strong correlations to soy causing Alzheimer’s and that’s quite a stretch. Comparing entire countries with millions of people’s Alzheimer’s risk and then trying to connect it to soy consumption is kinda weird, there’s many more reasons a country may have higher Alzheimer’s risk. That other study does link soy increased Alzheimer’s risk but basing a conclusion on one study is also not the best.

I haven’t read those studies entirely, I will later today hopefully.

Thanks for not being disrespectful or anything, I know you disagree with me a bit on this and I appreciate you breaking down why you think what you do appropriately.

I just think a lot of studies that come out are biased, and I believe thats what caught the attention of people in this thread. Like I said before, the answer probably lies somewhere in the middle. Soy pops up here and there in my diet, but infrequently. I don't run from it, but I don't over indulge in it the way I do meat.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I don't intentionally eat much soy as I do believe there is potentially a deleterious hormonal effect on males, but I'm not scared to ingest some tofu or other soy products on occasion.

I mean its possible to find a study to support anything you want to, nicotine, alcohol, soy, etc. so I just always come back to assuming the answer is probably moderation. Even though I meal prep semi-identical meals every week for the past 1.5 decades, my wife and I utilize our dinners for variety.

It's just like everything else, moderation. I had a Cliff builder bar for breakfast this morning which is a soy protein bar, and I use soy sauce and eat edamame here and there. I'm not worried about it. No matter what the topic of discussion is, you can usually find studies that back up both sides. People get sensitive over diet like politics and religion. Vegans and keto p seem to be the most sensitive of the groups it's like they ride or die to the death that their way is the best.

But just like I think eating 2000 calories every day from soy products is a bad idea, 2000 calories from steak and eggs and butter probably isn't a great idea either.

I definitely will enjoy the steaks more then the tofu tho
