Selaginella Tamariscina In the… WILD

Ok ok it wasn’t actually in the wild but I’m still nerding out. Me and my wife took our little Angel Gianna to a Nursery just for fun and to have a little adventure. Well after the 2nd time we were asked for help, I got the wild idea of asking if they had Selaginella Tamariscina plants. The employee said yes…. I almost sh*t my pants. He took me over to them and it was like I was star struck lol (I am a massive fan of Amentoflavone). I understand there is different strains of plants and this may not exactly be the same plant but the employee told me it was so i was going bonkers. I took photos I will attach in replies because I’m afraid of messing up everything I’ve typed. If anyone knows anything about the raw plant and if there is benefits like the extract, well, ya boys about to be a botanist and grow one!

I love gardening and growing stuff but mostly vegetables and pot 😂. Do these flower or are they a medicinal plant. Just curious, the old Google machine gave me a blanket description.

I miss my kids being that innocent age, now there in highschool and college and there dickheads 😂

When I retire, I can assure you, I’ll be growing some devils lettuce lol! I don’t believe they flower, and I haven’t studied extensively but ChatGpt says it’s mainly for anti-inflammatory, but it’s got a list of claimed benefits including antiviral/immune health, liver protection, blood sugar regulation. I take it for blood flow/pumps, which I really do think it works. I still haven’t ran it 100% alone to tell you for sure, but I’m loving it. I think there was a study showing it was substantially better than caffeine at releasing calcium in the muscle (do not quote me on that one though)

It really is a beautiful thing, lol you and many others have warned me so far, and thinking back about how my sister and me were through puberty, well I’m not super thrilled thinking about it LOL

It sounds like a cool plant, I'm definitely going to research. Anything that has potential inflammation relief benefits I'm interested in, anything that increases pumps or blood low is a bonus as well.

As for the devil's lettuce, I started early this year 😂

Pretty soon I'm going to make a bunch of clones out of these and then I got a transition them outside into a greenhouse. Peppers, tomatoes and this stuff all do well together and I like to plant herbs and spices in between the plants to ward off bugs.

The selaginella appears to do well with very high humidity and can do good in 50-85/89° so I think I can throw some of them on the shaded wall of my greenhouse

Bubba I almost broke my nose on my phone screen trying to get a wiff LOL they look amazing.

And yeah chatgbt said it could grow well in Florida. I’m moving there next year and I’ll need a new outside hobby. So I’m thinking plants/herbs. I live in Texas right now and the winters are absolutely brutal, and it also gets dry af here in the summer. Me and my wife started some various kitchen herbs last year and the only thing that made it was our rosemary plant, and I’ll be damned, most resilient plant I’ve ever seen, was neglected for 4 months and still survived in brutal Texas weather. So with Florida’s nice weather, ima take a crack at it. Also which strain are you growing, Indica or sativa?

Living in Texas you would probably need to grow indoors with humidifiers running,

The 2 tall ones are gorilla glue #1 (Indica)
The bushy ones are sour Diesel (sativa)

Typically their appearances should look the opposite of each other The gorilla glue or indicas is normally shorter and bushier and the sour diesel or sativas are normally taller. I trained the Sour to be short by tying down some of the branches, and the other one I just let go for no real reason other than I wanted to just make them look the opposite of the way they were supposed to lol. Eventually I'm just using these plants to make a bunch of clippings and then all of those clippings I'm going to make clones and all of those clones are going to be the ones I actually use to grow and flower/harvest. I genuinely enjoy the whole process. If I couldn't smoke any more I would still grow it.

Yeah indoors sounds like the move, but we have zero space for it. And DAMN ok we do have a botanist already haha. And I’m guessing clones produce better quality? Yeah I was a major pothead in grade school, kinda miss it. Texas will probably be the last damn state to legalize it. Florida made it medical, and my father in law is actually prescribed, so I’m extremely jealous lol.

No not better quality, but the clone is basically a exact copy of the plant it comes from. So growing a bunch of clones together will give you a end product where every plant should be exactly the same. When you grow every plant from seed they all can be slightly different variations of each other, sometimes drastically different variations. Every time you pop a seed it's just like a person having a baby it could have more treats like the mother or the father, And just like if you have multiple children they all look a little bit different and they all act a little bit different and it's the same with plants. So just to ensure that my end product is all the same thing and the same quality you grow a bunch of clones of one plant. I'm not always the greatest that explaining things so I apologize if that's a little unclear

Learn something new everyday, it was extremely clear to me, probably because I too am horrible at explaining things, so we speak the same language. Very interesting though, I do have a question that’s kinda side note, which region of the world grows the best naturally? I know science and extracts obviously makes some crazy lab stuff, but grown naturally outdoors? I’ve always been curious about that, I remember back in the day a lot of people told me the Middle East, which I thought was kinda wild. That’s obviously all hear say though.

Afghan mountains or Humboldt County depending on which stoner rabbit hole you go down haha

EDIT: at this point though, its probably kind of a mute argument because the plant has been selectively bred to the point where certain strains will grow better in certain areas and theres no true answer to this haha

lol sounds like you have, it’s just wild to me that it can grow tropically and then on the side of some Middle East mountain. Yea that makes sense, Well my new answer now is “Smonts basement” lololol

Ya I was going to say it depends on the strains but if we look at the landrace strains which are the original strains that only come from certain places, those are the best places to grow. Ideally anywhere that it's 65-85° and 40-60% humidity. Indicas can handle colder climates and shorter summers and sativas like warmer and longer summers. Because I live in Connecticut the outdoor flower begins around the second week of August so When I'm growing outdoors I need to pick strains that will be finished flowering and ready to harvest in about 8 weeks from mid August. Some of the sativa's take 12-16 weeks to flower and it's too cold here. Last year I made the mistake of growing a mystery strain. By November 12th it was in the 40's and it never finished. I still chopped it down and harvested it but it was a much lower quality smaller bud product and a lot of it I had to chuck because it got bud rot from the cold damp weather. This year my sativa's will be in a greenhouse so I can let those finish better but I won't be picking anything that takes longer than 10 total weeks of flower

Totally want some pictures when they are done!

CT has had some decent growing weather recently... my plug has a little 'community' going, a couple people really love growing, one of the girls had this monster StrawGuava plant going last summer. I think it was ~8.5ft tall when she finally chopped it down for harvest. That fucking tree she grew survived all those crazy rain/wind storms we had last year hahaha

A little tip, if you remove the leaves from the bottom 1/3 of the plant before it flips to flower, All the extra energy goes up to the buds and produces a much better product and the plant being less bushy allows for better airflow and less chance of getting bud rot.

Here's a good example on a smaller plant, this is not one of mine I just pulled this off the internet but when you clean up the bottom of the plant basically you just end up with a bunch of big beautiful buds on top and you eliminate all those weird little fluffy popcorn nuggets.

This is the last couple buds from the blueberry muffins I grew last year I wish I had more came out so good. I did save some seeds though

IIRC that was her 'plant it and let it go' experiment last year haha

Theres a few guys in the group who have some pretty legit indoor setups and treat the plants like their children. One of em had a hell of a Trop Cherry haul this past fall

Ya, that plant was trained up nice and it's beautiful 😍

That particular guy has been known to give away clones, so if you're ever looking, can put you in touch lollll. It's an interesting little crew I found, true lovers of the plant.

I'm good but thank you, I have a couple buddies who grow for the dispos in Rhode Island. The send me seeds and give me clones all the time. If I had to take a guess I probably have 50-60 seeds right now and I just made 20 clones last night. My problem is I start too many plants all the time lol. Last year I pulled about 3lbs of finished product from the garden and lost another pound to bud rot. I don't exactly abide by the 3 plants per person rule lol

I got all kinds of experiments going on too. Some hydroponics, some I'm trying different kinds of lights. Some plants I'm just letting him go into giant bushes so I can use them to make tons of clones.

I Don't sleep much so I do these things to stay busy.

I see purpleeeee 👀
Thats a strawberry banana autoflower from fast buds, the stems on both plants turned pink as soon as they got out of the seedling stage. To be fair it was a little cold in that room and that can kind of make it happen as well but I have seen other strawberry bananas before and they all kind of had that pink stem and lighter green leaves
