Sean's Powerlifting Journey

Nope.

My buddy owns it, it's a warehouse gym (we both compete in Strongman).

We have a good amount of Strongmen that come train here, and 2 pro's that come train regularly.

I usually don't see many other people in your vids, so I thought it was a personal gym.

Yeah, he runs S+C classes in the A.M. and P.M. so I typically avoid those times and come when it's empty.

Plus, most people don't want to train in a non air conditioned warehouse that's full of squat racks and weights. Not enough TV's, the music's too loud, and they don't want to work hard.

Which one did you pick? I can give you the real scoop on Denver gyms from a competitors standpoint.

I was looking at Iron Warrior. Seems like good facilities, nice equipment and keypad entry to go whenever I want. What one would you recommend?

Iron Warrior is good shît, but it's way out if the way on the west end of town. Depending on where you'll be living that may not be an issue.

Rocky Mountain Powerlifting Club has keypad entry, and is the best powerlifting specific gym I've ever trained at, but they don't have a monolift like IW. I didn't care so it wasn't an issue for me.

Colorado Pro Gym is very PL and Strongman friendly (Mike Burke trains there occasionally), but is equipped with some machines for other training modalities. Several bikini, fitness and men's physique competitors train here alongside the PL and strongmen. Owner is a cool ass dude as well.

You'll hear Armbrust, simply because Phil Heath trains there. This is almost 100% bodybuilders and physique/figure. I've found it to be not very PL friendly, and it's more drama than a reality show IMHO. Still, well equipped and very popular.

I've trained at all 4, I call CPG my "home" because that's where I got my start, but you can't go wrong with IW or RMLC.

Hit me up when you know where you'll live and work and I can help you out more.

Thanks for the run down! I'll have to look into all of them and figure it out. Armbrust is close to where I'd be living but I've heard it's more bodybuilding orientated so I was gonna avoid it. If I get a job down in Denver I'll be staying at my parents off 38th and Tennyson or my brothers house off 13th and Speer but I'll hit you up once I figure everything out.

Nice squatting, Sean. No sickness can keep you down long.

Oh they weren't easy. I'm still hurtin from getting back into things on Monday lol

My shoulder whining might cease soon. I squatted with a straight bar, a day after training my upper body, and my shoulder is still mobile.

That's some serious reps man. Gonna be awesome to see where your squat is next time you test it.

Lookout, 1500, Sean called and he said his shoulder's feeling good!

I still want to try that pallof press... Is there a particular knee sleeve you like, sean? Mine will not stay in place and is always slipping down...

Pallof Press is good stuff. Also look up the Half-kneeling Anti-rotation Cable Press.

I have EFS sleeves. They're comfortable and they have held up but they're beginning to bug me for the same reason: they keep slipping down. I'm researching other options.

Hmmm...maybe that's just the nature of them then. Mine is a shock doctor sleeve, and when I first bought it, the fit was great. Now, after several months of use, it has stretched a bit and will not stay put when walking.

Yeah. I'm looking at Titan sleeves right now. Still debating.

I wanna get sleeves and power shoes come tax return. Sean, feel free to buy first and review for me :P

My buddy really like his nikes but he doesn't move the kind of weight we do. You don't like the adipower?

Thought about the red Adipowers but then a chick had the Nikes at my gym. I checked them out and they seemed good. Reviews say that the construction is durable and you feel anchored to the ground. I like the addition of the second strap as well, which I have on my VS's. Stillllll researching.

I can only speak for the Adidas powerlifts which I have, which are the budget friendly version of the adipower you could say. They haven't given me any issues with my pulls as far as deformation or shifting, nice and tight on my feet and awesome grip to the floor. I'm the the adipowers are only better. I know you definitely need something sturdy with your squat though.

Yeah I'm looking for something that will last long term, regardless of price. I like the sole on my VS, but everything else has worn down and is loose. I'll most definetly not be using them to pull in either. I'll get something eventually.

Yeah just keep looking and reading.. would be nice if we all had local stores that carried powerlifting products for us to go and try... like a dicks or dunhams for PLers.

Did/does dead or squatting bother your AC joint. I am more and more convinced this is what is wrong with me. I want it to heal but don't want to put off pulling/squatting, but don't wana make it worse and have wasted all the deload time I just spent. Might go see the PT here at school next week just to get an eval done and figure out what it is/treatment. Nice thing about being direct access is I can skip the doctor and just find out what's wrong.

Deadlifting doesn't wasnt/isn't an issue at all. At the worst of my discomfort, getting the mobility to get under the squat bar was an issue. Loosening up my pecs with the lax ball solved that problem. You may need to inch your grip out a tad depending on how close you are. I've adapted a false grip since then as well.

That's kinda what I was thinking/hoping. But just wanted to check since you obviously have experience. I think that getting under the bar will be annoying for sure. Thanks boss.

It's not even painful for me, really. Like I can think of many things more painful, It's just like a dull ache... when it's warmed up I don't even feel anything. When I sleep or lay still/sit still it doesn't feel anything. Just when I'm moving around or super internally rotate.

Off topic here: saw "Lone Survivor" tonight....go see it, you will wanna either cry or go kill Taliban....or both in my case. Been too long since I blew anything up!!!

The bar speed between my sumo and conventional is absurd now. Good session. My weekend is screwy and I won't be able to deadlift at work next week so tomorrow will be upper, Thursday squats, and Sunday night deadlift.

Reps are yucky. Something we all need to do more of though. Nice work today. And I agree lone survivor was very good.

Loved Lone Survivor...

And I know I am always a broken record with this..........BUT my adipowers were possibly the best purchase I made for anything lifting related of all time. Just saiyain.

Oh and screw all those reps hahaha

Conventional block pull should be awesome for your lockout, buddy. I was thinking of suggesting to the girl in my crew to do sumo from the floor and block pulls both sumo and conventional and put deficits on the back burner. She has all kinds of speed off the floor, not enough hips yet, used to have a narrow sumo stance, and her back rounds.
