Sean's Powerlifting Journey

Jebus Sean, I've never seen anybody change their grip mid set w 550 on their back! Depth looked great...

lol I know right?. I forgot to chalk my hands and they were sweating pretty good.

Bumped my stance out and still hit depth pretty easily. Got dat der mobilitiness back.

Nice session. The hands moving scared me.

I know what you mean about those days where not a lot gets done on paper but you're still shot. You're getting to the point with squat weights where you can't (and shouldn't) do too much assistance work. There was an article about it on EFS about a month ago or so, a Reno Hardcore article. Forget what it's called, though.

Hm I'll look for it

Who needs pansy assistance exercises when you squat with a million plates on the bar? ;)

Dinner..with leftovers for a few more meals

Contemplated multiply unlimited. I train solo too often though. I have a 700lb lifetime raw goal, regardless of bodyweight. Someday I'd like to be in a suit again tho

Seeing guys walking out in multi ply gear in training is always quite the feat. If you have the safeties in place, I think you could make it happen. No shame in continuing to build that raw base, though!

It is interesting. I find the absolute best strength(in my young PL timeframe) to be knees out, but not far out. Kind of like the recent Dan Green video where he discusses a strong point out of the hole with the knees right around the parallel or slight out of the foot.

I think a problem with doing this or that experts way without them being there to critique it is PEOPLE MAY BE DOING IT WRONG haha.

Nice read Sean

A little food for thought, when I teach my wife to squat I have to watch her placement because she is hyper mobile so it is easy for her to over extend to a vulnerable position.

Funny how they didn't discuss that Starrett's cue is not knees out. I believe it's discussed in BASL about that specific cue being ineffective. I don't even cue people with "knees out" because it results in a half-assed effort (pun intended). When you cue like KStarr and say screw your feet into the ground, the glutes get activated, the knees go where they should, and the whole lower body system is tight.

Yea that in turn keeps the knees from collapsing. Hard to collapse the knees when you're squeezing your ass cheeks together like you are in a prison shower. We don't kneed that ****!

I guess I never saw the cue of knees out as actually putting the shins at a plane other than 90 degrees perpendicular to the floor, but more of a tie in to "spread the floor" and keep them from swimming.

I used to be like that. Maybe stabilizers? I never really knew why. I only use bb now cause I don't like getting into position with db

Same here Sean. I was going too deep w the DBs. Did some banded Rc work and seems better now as long as I only go to normal BB depth and go slow down at the bottom.

I get that too. I can flat but once I start getting heavier it feels uncomfortable...yet inclines always feel fine with DBS

Also, it hurts doing flat dumbell press but not incline. What does that mean?

Tight thoracic generally. It's easier to create tension in the mid traps and hold it with incline. I actually taught myself how to get and hold tension and "push" with the mid traps with incline.

So..I've stayed consistent with giving myself 15 minutes a day for shoulder/hip work. Even if it's sitting on the couch and working on internal rotation. My hips are still good after pulling sumo and a slightly wider squat stance. Glute medius is tight but that will free up easily.

I followed the second link yesterday, except I exchanged the barbell Cuban press for dumbells, and I completely forgot to do the second exercise.

Nice squatting Sean, what meet is next? I say stay raw or single, no multi.

I'm thinking maybe hopping into single again...

Thanks bud. I don't have any meets planned out. I don't really want to take things serious until after the holidays. Now is my **** around time (though I secretly want to do another meet ASAP). Possible RPS meet in March though..

I won't do multi, or probably even single ply again, unless I have some more time on my hands and people to lift with...and that'll probably never happen. I can go to a well known PL gym in the area that's affiliated with EFS, but they only do morning and evening crews, and my times are sporadic. I may throw the suit on for ****s and giggles though. I definetly didnt know how to use the suit, considering I squatted raw what I squatted in the suit.

You have any meets you're looking at?

Agreed, I want to do the same since I'm now beating my single ply squat and DL raw.

Most likely something in January, then May. Both with my club. Several of my lifters got invited to LA Fit Expo and want me to go down there to handle them, but I didn't get invited to lift.

A guy here got invited as well. Dunno if he's gonna lift or not

Gotta be top 10 in your weight class to be invited is what I was told.

Yup. They pick em off PL watch I guess.
My training partner told me I could go DL only and try to pull 660-670, lol, don't know how I'd fare DL only.

I'll just do a local meet in Jan, try to total 1500+

Just to lift on a big stage with some powerful dudes would be pretty awesome, though. 1500 is just an awesome number to be talking about. Elite at 198! You're right in the ballpark, you'll definitely hit it sometime in 2014.

If I ever end up built like Duffin, I'd be able to die a happy man.
