Sean's Powerlifting Journey

Inside of my son's right eye is permanently bloodshot.

I was most likely set up under the bar crooked, which is why it leaned to one side. That would cause everything to come off balance, such as my left hip sinking in more. My squat still needs some work. Lost some of my groove I think

I feel like you would have had some off balance issues coming down. Perhaps not though. If you have an issue next session we know it's not setup. I hope not.

We all need form work, forever. It's never perfect. And when we think it is and when we let the form get looser.

When going for a max...the stars need to align. Lol

Going down is the easy part, so an imbalance wouldn't be as noticed. It tipped when I was in the hole. Had a slightly higher bar position too. Didnt sit back far enough either. Plus it was 35lbs over a PR. So, I'm over it lol

When you are lifting numbers in this elite area, jumps of 35 Lbs is a lot to ask. I still think that if you had dialed everything in before the lift you would have nailed it.

True. 565 was 15lbs over my last PR 550. 585 would have been a big jump in just a few months.

You guys are making me feel bad for going for a 50 pound deadlift PR. But yeah that's a very good point. Idk. Although it was a big jump for you I think it was realistic based on your numbers lately.

It's possible. I went from a 485 pull to 575 in about 9 months once I incorporated heavy amounts of good mornings and rotated my pulls between sumo and conventional. Sumo was my strength tester, but conventional was my strength builder.

I'm contemplating pulling Monday before I fly out of town. If not, I'll use my 525 PR for training purposes. I hit it fairly hard, percentage wise, the last few weeks and feel its catching up.

Good point on switching between convo and sumo. I lost convo strength. I still plan on using SG to supplement as well

Standby for some bench videos later tonight. Gotta figure out how to not suck!

I lost a huge amount of conventional strength. I struggled to get a few reps of 405 last time I really went heavy on them. Even if it's just some rack/elevated conventional pulls, everyone should always implement conventional work.

Upper

Bench Press
225x3x8 (rep x set)

Pendlay Rows
225x8x5

DB Curls/Standing N. Grip DB Press
30x12x3/50x15x3

Banded Tri Pulldowns
x20x4

Banded Facepulls(Light)/Pullaparts(light)/3Ds(mini)

DB Side Bends/Banded Crunches(strong)

Shoulder was tight and bugging me a bit so I just did low rep bench. No video unfortunetly. At work..too many people in the tiny room. Felt good though. Decent leg drive, sunk into my chest and held it for a competition length pause and powered through.

Body is feeling 10x better than it was yesterday. Will do some more mobility drills and mashing later tonight. Hopin to pull Monday morning if I get off work in time. Then it's a week of no lifting/diet. Boo

You might be surprised how good you'll feel after that week off bubba. I would stay on the mobility routine if that is possible though.

Almost forgot...nice Pendlays!!

Yeah I'm going to take the lacrosse balls and an average and mini band with me. I just felt "blah" in the gym today. Monday if, if I have time, I'll rip up a few deads and call it good. My dad has an Olympic platform in his basement and a rack so I might do a light weight fully body on Wednesday. Def keeping up with the mobility work though. That, and Boulevard Wheat Ale and BBQ every night.

Thanks, man (Pendlays) My favorite back exercise. I used to do them bodybuilding style (Yates?) but I feel a much better lat activation if I explode off the floor how Pendlay teaches it

That vacation sounds like some quality time champ. I agree on the Pendlays also.

Boom

Dude that 565 squat looked so easy there's no reason you shouldn't have gotten the 585 other than mental block and your setup.

Also, why don't you use the mono right next to you instead of wasting energy walking out 1rms?

Thanks, man. I didnt want to chance not having someone work the lever for me on the mono. I can rig it up solo with a mini band so when I unrack it, the arms swing out, but didnt want to mess a ghetto rig. Normally I lift before noon and the gym owner is to BS around with.

I shut down my pulls at 405. I knew I wasn't going to pull too much today...threw up my carb up last night and I'm not a morning person.

I got the same pain (high on my adductor) as I did last week when I pulled. I describe it as a scratch type feeling on the muscle. Maybe some adductor mashing and stretching my relieve that?

Pulling conventional or sumo?

Here's a video for you:(you probably already do this)

Sumo. I'm a weak mofo conventional now.

You dirty ol man. That video is so much better than watching SuperD. I want her to foam roll her groin on my face.

But yes, that used to be a part of my daily regiment. Pre/post and evening. Ive neglected it when working on other issues, now that one's become the issue. I'll hop back on it.

Selling my Inzer Hardcore and Max DL, both size 34 (195-210lbs), single ply. I'll go multi when I get into equipped lifting again.

Lemme know if anyone is interested.

Lol..just prefer watching that as opposed to some dude rolling out his junk.

My .02: I think you need to put in some mileage pulling sumo before the heavy loading comes in. Build up your work capacity with it to get the groove and let your body adjust to this new form of stress. You had to build up doing conventional in order to get to those weights right. You just jumped right into heavy loads with the sumo.

Very very good point. 5/3/1 will do well with getting me acclimated to it. Ive done zero volume with sumo. Week 1 will total 25 reps at 75%

What's the training max for sumo?

Have you guys seen the inzer power ratchet belt?

Would post a link but Idk if it's legal

Don't see why it'd be a problem posting. Who knows.

Thing looks crazy. I like the idea, as my belly fluctuates so much. Fairly indxpensive also. I don't wear my belts too tight though either.

I don't see how I could get that through my pant loops...

I wanna new belt for Christmas or b-day, I'll keep this one in mind when the time comes. Seems pretty cool. I like a tight belt on squats and sumo pulls, loser or deads and GMs.

Solid article for sure. Your back looked thick in that vacay pic in the other thread bubba.

Thanks buddy, tryin to get it thick. Been doing some thinking while on vacation. Just going to get big and lean, weight won't matter. If that means cuttin 10lbs overnight to be a 198, or bulkin up to be a big lean 220, so be it. Jumpin back on carb cycling again Monday. ****s gonna get serious!

That being said-I'm plowing some Kansas City BBQ burnt ends and ribs.

Never get enough protein champ....carbs can definitely be monitored though.

I liked what the article had to say about coming out of gear and getting stronger. There's only so much you can gain from gear whoring and learning to work the gear. At some point, you've got it down and the only gains coming are muscular. Kind of like Dave Hoff going from 425 to 8-something in the same bench shirt. Look at that sumbitch and tell me he couldn't total 2200 raw with one raw training cycle under his belt.

sunk into my chest and held it for a competition length pause and powered through.

Then it's a week of no lifting/diet. Boo

I've been doing the same thing lately. In the past I always stopped an inch or two above the chest then pressed but I'm trying to get into the habit of training for competition lifts. As they say, train like you fight, fight like you train

That week's gonna pay dividends brother

Agree w this.

On weds I was touching my shirt for a 1 count then going...

Ezekial, Tuna (Italian dressing, paprika, mustard, pickle, onion), brown rice sweet chili chips. Giving Slinshot a try.

Conditioning/mobility later

I'm about to be a gym goer for a living :D

Although, with no pay (except for unemployment....)

Lucky

I wanna get out and work with CBP or the staties but for my kid to get my GI Bill, I'll have to extend 4 more years, which will put me at 12. Be stupid to get out when I'm more than halfway to retirement. My wife was supposed to go to OCS in a month and I coulda gotten out, but that's not happening anymore.
