Ruck

Hello, fellow AM members. As a 51-year-old individual with a rich history of engaging in various forms of cardio exercise, I have come to prioritize efficient training methods. Recently, I have had the opportunity to explore rucking, which has had a profound impact on my overall wellness.

By incorporating a 20-pound weight vest into my routine, I have noticed a decrease in joint stress, accelerated fat loss, and improved recovery times, ultimately leading to enhanced performance. I would be interested in hearing about your experiences with rucking, if any. Thank you.

I've never heard of rucking. But I've used weight vests on and off since high school. "39 now" but I have always found that Exercising with a weighted invest on makes everything feel better when the best comes off. It's like you become used to carrying around this 20 pound heavier person and when you take off the vest it's like you're walking on air

There is a Facebook group called Seek to do More. He prioritizes rucking or farmers carries through the woods! I started out using a hex bar carrying 135lbs for 1/4 mile. The goal is to eventually work up to your body weight for a half of mile. Creates mental toughness/gritt. I did it twice a week for 3 weeks and then I got the freaking Gout for the past 3 weeks for the first time really bad. . I think I am finally recovering so will continue with the program soon.

I like the sound of that

Sorry but rucking is horrible on your joints. Being Army, we would ruck everywhere with 75+ pounds rucksacks for miles and that **** took a toll on my knees and lower back which I am suffering from now that I am 46. Yeah sure when you are younger it's not a problem but that **** adds up over the years and wears down your knees. I advise not rucking if you want to have healthy knees and lower back when you are older. Ask any Army veteran about rucking and they will tell you.

The military is kinda intentionally trashing you guys, but theres ways to do it better, at least the way I see it/experience it. In the military your using those 75lb sacks while your probably over trained and underfed, your cns is definitely over trained, nothin they make you guys do is optimal training, it's the opposite. They want you to perform in horrible conditions needed, and of course there trying to break ppl.

Someone using reasonable weights, training intelligently and getting proper rest and recovery isint going to take the same beating. Try going hiking with a 20lb vest on instead of that sack. Now I dont know if you still would call that rucking, but I can tell you that doing some light to moderate intensity stuff with a weighted vest wont beat you down the same way. At 40+ I wouldn't want to be doing much if any high impact stuff under loads.

In the military, how often would thay have you ruck like that? And how often would you run? I'm assuming both were done at high frequency and not much time for rest or recovery

While I never associated with rucking, I used to train with a weight vest when I was in pre-season for rugby and training a lot of martial arts as it made everything feel easier when I didn't have it. But, it didn't take long to realize how bad it was on my joints and the recovery time was getting longer. I personally don't think it is a good thing, same as carrying around a bunch of extra weight. Ended up dropping it and wouldn't go back.

Like him or not, Andrew Huberman prescribes to rucking. Never done it myself. For my cardio, I mostly enjoy road cycling in the warmer months and HIIT when there's snow.

All I need to know is that Huberman prescribes to it and I know it's not good, despite my own experiences.
