REVIEW: Cissus strengthens stomach lining

I have been using USPLabs' Cissus RX for three weeks now at the recommended dosage (2 caps twice daily) with calcium/mag taken on an empty stomach. I originally purchased it to lessen the stingy pain in my rib area (either a fractured rib or torn cartilage).

Results:

To date the acute rib pain has lessened considerably and rarely/mildly interferes with my workouts.

In addition all back pain and tendon/joint aches have dissappeared.

However the most surprising result appears to be a strengthening of my stomach lining. I have no ulcers but I do have a stomach that gets irritated easily from coffee specifically and food generally. My Gastroenterologist has me buffer the stomach with prescription Sucralfate prior to each meal & lessen stomach acid with Prilosec OTC. This worked well but I was still unable to tolerate coffee.

After reading the abstract from The Journal of Medicinal Foods, Effect of Cissus quadrangularis on Gastric Mucosal Defensive Factors in Experimentally Induced Gastric Ulcer: A Comparative Study with Sucralfate I had some hope that Cissus would help my problem. I am pleased to report that it appears to have done so after three weeks at about 5g per day. I can now drink coffee without any ache/pain/irritation. In addition I am now able to forgo buffering with prescribed Sulcrafate prior to drinking protein shakes.

I will continue to take Cissus and monitor the effects but so far it has produced a very happy tummy.

Cissus quadrangularis is an indigenous plant commonly mentioned in Ayurveda for treatment of gastric ulcers. The ulcer-protective effect of a methanolic extract of C. quadrangularis (CQE) was comparable to that of the reference drug sucralfate. Further, gastric juice and mucosal studies showed that CQE at a dose of 500 mg/kg given for 10 days significantly increased the mucosal defensive factors like mucin secretion, mucosal cell proliferation, glycoproteins, and life span of cells. The present investigation suggests that CQE not only strengthens mucosal resistance against ulcerogens but also promotes healing by inducing cellular proliferation. Thus, CQE has potential usefulness for treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

This couldn't lead to some kind of growth of the gut, could it? I wouldn't see that as a plus... The GH/Slin gut isn't all that sexy.

I doubt it would. Excessive doses of GH cause growth in all of the internal organs. This CQ study refers only to the GI mucosa resisting erosions, not to any actual growth characteristics. Need futher study to confirm.

I'd like to see more input from ulcerative colitis and Chrohn's sufferers as to whether this has helped them at all. I know CEOSM gifted some Cissus to someone with UC. My wife has UC but she's reluctant to take "anymore" supplements that I throw at her lol.
