Is protein one of the biggest things to take to build muscle and gain weight.
If so how much protein should I be taking in each day I weigh 156lbs I'm 24 years old and looking to weigh 185lbs

What kind of workouts have you tried before?

I would suggest "madcow 5×5" if you're just beginning strength training.

I've tried 5x5 when I worked out before and had awesome results

How long have you been training?
And how tall are you?

If you want to put on weight, you need enough total cals in, not just protein. But aim for 1-1.5g of protein per lb of bodyweight.
Don't try and put on 30lbs overnight. If you want 30lbs of muscle, it will take time to grow it.
