It blocks testosterones conversion to dht by inhibiting the 5 alpha reductase enzyme. One of the functions of testosterone is to convert to dht as dht serves critical functions as a sex hormone but also has neuro effects.... some people need dht lowered however because of hair loss or enlarged prostate and thus propecia is prescribed.

Propecia is the brand name for finasteride. As state above it inhibits testosterone converting to DHT. High DHT levels can cause issues but DHT is also one of the best drivers for gaining strength which is why most compounds derived from DHT yield great strength gains.

Something to keep in mind when using ancillaries such as finasteride which will alter the way the hormone is utilized by your body. It is user dependent but the bodies androgen receptors can only handle so much of a given hormone, in this case testosterone. That means when those receptors are full your excess test will convert to DHT or estrogen. So keep in mind if using something like finasteride you may cause elevated estradiol levels due to having a higher amount of free testosterone that has no receptor to bind with. This is why blood work is so important precycle as well as during your cycle.

This is the very quick down and dirty version. If you want to know more there are great articles on this subject with more coming out as hormone therapy is becoming more widely accepted in the US. Also there’s an outstanding video series on YouTube where Dr Rand McClain answers many questions about using exogenous hormones.
