In 2004 president bush signed into effect the Anabolic Steroid control act of 2004. This was the second of two acts and was put into place to update the first steroid control act which was put into effect in 1990 . This second act added another 26 new steroid compounds to the list, and also gave 15 million dollars for educational programming to teach children the dangers of steroid use. The bill also directed the U.S. sentencing commission to increase the penalty for possession or selling of any of the band substances(Collins 1 ). Though the U.S. government has made repeated attempts to rid the country of steroids they have all been useless and a complete waste of time because it is impossible to illegalize the future.
Many people think since the 2004 ban on anabolic steroids that the problem has for the most been solved, or at least the problem of being able to buy steroids in a common health food store or online. This is simply not true since the 2004 ban there have been multiple new compounds that have been released onto the market. These substances are now being marked under a new name or class known as prohormones which are described by Author L. Rea as “A prohormone is simply one that requires an enzymic or other chemical interaction before becoming an active hormone” which simply means it’s a legal substance out side of the body, but once ingested turns into one of the many band substances on the steroid control acts ( Rea 1) . The major flaw with any law banning steroids is that you can’t ban a substance if it hasn’t been created yet. There is always going to be someone post ban willing enough to pay a chemist to create a new substance that will make people faster, stronger and bigger, and also a large enough market of people who want to buy it to make it worth there while to produce the new hormones. that’s why it will always be a useless cat and mouse game for the government with to many holes and never enough traps.
The main reason for either of the anabolic control substance acts was to maintain the authenticity of U.S. sports. People clamed to think it was only a few rogue players who were using these drugs, but in all honesty pro and Olympic athletes suggest that more than 75 percent of participants take these drugs. Which if really thought about makes sense considering the average wait of linemen in football used to be 215 pounds where as in now the norm is 330(Blechman, Fahey 144) . Sports organizations are now implementing drug tests to try and impede the ongoing use of anabolic drugs in sports, but with the invention of the now designer steroids like DMT it is impossible to detect these knew substances without first ever having a sample of them ( Blechman, Fahey 145). Most sports enthusiasts lament over the now steroid scandals in pro sports, and say how they long for the old days when sport where about the heart of the game and not “just juicing to get the big money” . If people really thought about it though wouldn’t they think these player are really taking hormones to better them selves past there genetic potential for the betterment of the game, and wouldn’t that thing that’s pushing them to the point of if they were to get caught bring a life time banning from there sport and or career. Wouldn’t that be heart, or for the love of the game.
One of the number one backers of the steroid control acts are parents concerned about there children getting involved with steroids. Many people back it and say how great this anti drug law is and how it will save thousands of junior high and high school kids. We here about it all the time on the news sports, kids and drug abuse yet a article written by Muscular Development said “a survey of 3248 junior high and high school students from 12 states showed that only 1.6 percent (2.4 percent males and 0.8 percent females) had ever used steroids. During the past 20 years, no study reported that more than 4 percent of students have used these drugs.”(Blechman, Fahey 128) which shows it has never really been a problem to begin with yet one of the governments and school districts top priorities is to get random drug testing into high school and junior high sports, yet this is one of the least funded areas of the public school system and one of the first areas to be cut when funds are low.
In 2004 steroids had seen there second attack and it wasn’t going to take the fight lightly .Since then people have seen many of the victories of the government through the news media, but on the other hand no one has really seen many of there falters .The loopholes and sciences that are on the chemist side are to great for the government to be able to handle . Even if again the government were to update the list on band hormones it wouldn’t matter because after a few months when all the dust settled there would be new compounds coming out to replace the old, for as long as there is a demand for a product there will also always be a supply.
