Pinched nerve loss of strength on bench press/overhead push

So I'm wondering if anybody's ever had this I got a pinched nerve in my back about 4 weeks ago and the pain is still there. I also noticed my strength in my left arm has dropped about 20 lb compared to my right arm. I have a doctor's appointment but it's a few weeks out, that's the soonest they could get me in, any ideas?

Sounds like you need a quick chiropractic adjustment. See a chiro that adjusts lifters. I bet the problem will disappear immediately. Physio would probably get it resolved or not and u may go numerous times without the adjustment happening by itself. Imo your dr won’t help you. I am a seasoned powerlifter of 57 yrs old who has experienced this kind of stuff dozens of times.

I had 9 visits with one. Adjustment, some neck machine with them also, it didn't help. Is there a particular type of adjustment or something I should ask for. 48v years old and first time to a chiropractor and muscle strength due to a pinch. Having been then first time to one, I guess I'm a bit lost.

There are lots of chiro's who want you to keep coming back and never get anything done. They want your $. I would talk to the meathead powerlifters at your gym and find a real chiropractor that does manual adjustments and who adjusts lifters in the area. This case sounds like you should have major relief after one (probably mid / upper back) adjustment.

I really appreciate it, I'll see what I can find. Thank you.

I woke up in the morning after lifting the day before and I felt the pain under the bottom of my left shoulder blade. I didn't notice the weakness till I tried to bench. So it has effected my pressing movements, bench incline, decline, flat, shoulder press. And yesterday about dropped a db on my head getting in to skull crusher position. So I had 8 manual adjustments and no luck.

What movement or experience do u think caused the issue? If your unsure, what was (roughly) your workout the day before you noticed the issue?

Look to see if you can find a Physical Therapist with actual experience with athletes and lifters.

Being manipulated isn’t guaranteed to bring relief and is definitely not going to prevent issues from creeping back up if the underlying issues that led to the problem are not addressed.

You can still see your primary for a meeting, but that may mostly be just so you can try to get authorization if your insurance needs that to help cover some of the cost, but be prepared knowing many PT may just be cashed based for the kind of care you’d actually want or find useful.

Good luck!

Real Chiro’s also do physical therapy (deep tissue, scraping, ART etc..) within the same appointment. Plus providing movements (a path forward) to resolve the issue for the long term. I have always seen them as much better value than physical therapists.

I’d disagree a PT with a real degree and who isn’t based in a field of pseudoscience is more valuable.

Plenty of PT do all those things as well, the good ones just tend to be less burdened by poor pseudoscience and quackery.

Saying they “also do PT” misses the entire point when things like deep tissue, scraping, manips, etc aren’t “PT” those are just tools a person can use as part of their plan. “A path forward” through movement is just Chiros trying to be more like a PT and move past their actual “field”.

In any field you’ll have good and bad, I’ve known trash PTs and amazing Chiros, but as a whole and based on their foundations I’ll always default to PTs.

If I remember right the day before was chest and back, and I'm at a new gym that has different pull-down machines so i have been using those. So my only other thought was maybe I pulled something underneath my shoulder blade but then it moved up to the trap far as pain. So for example if I do dumbbell presses I can have a 60 pounder in my right hand and a 40 in my left hand and my left hand is still shaking as it's trying to push up.

Go to PT, there are some that are really good at fixing nerve problems ie entrapment, neural tension, etc. with dry needling, Astym, manual therapy. You might need an emg from a doctor. Good luck to you.
