They are both bile salts. One is expensive, the other one is cheap. Sodium choleate is a dietary supplement that helps improve bile secretion and digestion. It is the purified part of the ox’s bile acquired through the evaporation of the concentrated bile’s alcoholic extract. It is soft solid with a yellowish green color and a slightly bitter taste. Liver diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatitis may be treated with a regular intake of ox bile extract. Cirrhosis is a liver disease often resulted by high alcohol intake, but also may be caused by hepatitis or heavy steroid usage. According to Baseline of Health Foundation, a supplemental dosage of ox bile extract with food is needed to compensate for the lack of bile in the digestive tract.

So what is the difference between the two when it comes to liver protection. Are they both as effective?


Bile salts + s-adenosylmethionine is probably the most effective combination out there when it comes to liver protection.

"Plenty of studies have been carried out to compare the compositions of biles derived from other animals with bear bile; particularly attention was paid to bile acid due to its vital role in pharmacological activities. The bile acid compositions of several animals, including snake, pig, cattle, chicken, and rabbit, were preliminarily studied to compare with bear biles [19, 73]. Remarkably, the variants of chemical composition of the animal bile were observed. Pig bile contained a great deal of UDCA, whose taurine conjugated form is TUDCA. Snake bile acid was primarily comprised of TCA and rabbit bile contained a great deal of glycodeoxycholic acid (GDCA), whereas cattle bile acid mainly consisted of DCA, CDCA, and TCDCA, a series of DCA-based chemicals."

Isolated TUDCA (or UDCA) has a lot of good data on it with actual clinical use in alcoholics - are there any "swallowed by humans and showing a real world, practical effect" for all these animal biles? Checked out 'Baseline of Health'... not really convinced of their scientific chops. This leads me to believe that there are only test tube studies :https://www.hindawi.com/journals/ecam/2016/4305074/ - which is where I assume you pulled the quote from.

This is what I was wondering. I would be more interested in some practically studies. TUDCA is not that expensive when found on sale.
At the recommended dosages in studies it sure IS expensive, look it up.

The big bonus of TUDCA over bear bile is that TUDCA is only water soluble while regular bile salts are both water soluble and fat soluble...bile acids can back up in the liver (due to being fat soluble) and destroy membranes in the liver, while TUDCA does not.

Both TUDCA and UDCA increased concentrations of UDCA in the bile and improvemed the bile composition, with TUDCA being more effective due to its solubility.

There was a insignificant dose-response, with 1500mg being the most effective at reducing liver enzyme levels but 500mg being most economical; total cholesterol was reduced with 1000 and 1500mg.Diarrhea was the only side-effect noted.

If using TUDCA for treating an alcohol-abused liver, be aware of the temporal relationship needed. Co-incubation (same time) or rehabilitative (after the matter) usage of TUDCA may be protective of the liver while pre-loading TUDCA before drinking may be harmful to the liver.
