Eating onion to increase testosterone may seem like a joke, but in a study that was conducted on rodents by Iranian scientists it was shown that onion can increase testosterone levels in rodents as high as 300 percent. According to a research done at Tabriz University in Iran, onion juice can raise testosterone levels as much as anabolic steroids like nolvadex or clomid.

Onion ( Latin: Allium cepa) has a beneficial effect on treatment of various diseases worldwide and has been used since ancient times as a pharmaceutic and also a food source. Recent studies have also shown that onions are a high source of antioxidants and antioxidants can increase production of testosterone and sperm in the genitals.

The study was conducted on three groups of rodents for a time period of twenty days.
The first group (control group of 10 subjects) was given ordinary food, the second group (10 subjects) was given 0.5 g/kg of fresh onion juice a day, and the third group (also 10 subjects) were given 1.0 g/kg of onion juice every day.

On the twentieth day, sperm samples were taken and testosterone levels measured. It was determined that serum total testosterone significantly increased in all the test groups, and levels of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) significantly increased only in the group that received the high dose of fresh onion juice , but the level of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) did not differ between the experimental and control groups. Also sperm motility and viability was significantly increased in both test groups.

So what is the mechanism behind this success?

It is believed that antioxidants neutralize free radicals in the testes. This information is a result of the decrease in malondialdehyde concentrations that occur when high doses of onion juice were given to the subjects. The researchers suspect that the antioxidants in question are probably selenium compounds found in onions, and phenols such as quercetin and isorhamnetin. Isorhamnetin is also made in the body when enzymes convert quercetine with the help of S-adenosylmethionine.

There is already a long thread on it in here. Some people tried drinking raw onion juice to replicate the effects.

The idea seems like a joke but keep in mind that bulbine was launched after it raised testosterone threefold (347% is what gets quoted) in a rat study.

Who will come out with concentrated onion pills? :)

Very interesting. Onions are delicious so if this is true, nice added benefit.

i eat onions anyways, so if there is any added bonus to t levels (not to mention the other health benefits) all the better.
