Olympic WL to Bodybuilding

Repost due to recommendation:

Longtime gym junkie and competitive Olympic Weightlifter, who is used to moving the barbell for explosive power— getting into the sport of Bodybuilding as a novice and really excited to push myself into something new and difficult.

I’ve built a strong foundation of strength and some muscle mass as a 5ft 122lbs female, around 25% Body fat currently building.

Has anyone tried to transition from Oly to BB comp?

I’m aware of the basics and cautions of bodybuilding, and am shooting for competition in Novice Wellness. Reading forums, websites, and youtube have been a big help, but any resources or experience helps!

One of the biggest differences is in bodybuilding you want to work the target muscle or muscles as efficient as possible. You can still be explosive, but in a much more controlled manner. Control the negative, get a good stretch and make sure to contract the muscles being worked. With your background your ligaments and tendons are probably a lot stronger then your average Joe, your strength is probably significantly more then another female your size as well. Your probably going to need to dial back the weight and focus on form for a while.

Body by O and team atlas specialize in women's bodybuilding and wellness.

Fit body fusion has also produced a lot of pro female physiques as well

Also, look for other females who have switched from PL or OL to bodybuilding

Thanks so much for your reply, brother! It is much appreciated.

That’s awesome insight— I’ll definitely check them out. I’m currently building right now, tracking my macros (which I do in Oly, but more fine-tuned toward gains not just performance), and giving myself about a year of programming to build and see where I am from there.

In your opinion, what is the time frame to start prep and compete?

It's going to be different for everyone, but a lot of good coaches don't like there clients to have to diet more then 20 weeks. Bikini and wellness are the softest looking categories, 12-15% bf, figure is a little lower and bodybuilding wemons are like 7-8% which is really rough on a female.

If your starting at 25% with a good base of muscle and trying to get to 12-14% you would probably need a 16-20 week prep.

I'd imagine that switching up your training style with a focus on hypertrophy is going to change your body composition in a more favorable way. You may find yourself recomping the first few months and be leaner when you start the prep
