Hey all, relatively new to the site (I've been on the forums a fair bit but never posted anything before..). I've had some issues with supplements that I thought I might ask for some advice on.

I've been working out fairly intensely for the past 8 months. I started gradually, having a whey protein shake post workout, and worked my way up to using BCAAs/ N.O. Explode pre-workout. Somewhat out of the blue about two months ago I started getting really nasty stomach aches after taking whey. My question, as such, is if anyone knows what is going on. Is it possible to develop an allergy to whey more or less out of nowhere? I have no issues with soy/hemp/pea protein or foods high in protein for that matter, just whey. Is there anything I can do to get over this? If not, what proteins should I be using instead post-gym, and before bed?

Thanks

L

so allegeries are dose dependent. Example I am allergic to grass so if I walk on grass I'm fine but when I mow the grass watch out I'm going to itch from head to toe without my meds. Another thing to consider is the brand. Have you stuck to the same brand the entire time? If you have has the formula been altered in any way? The long and short of it is anything is possible.

try not using whey for awhile and then start using it again for a comparison....

I've never had any trouble with dairy. When I mix the whey with some form of carbs (oats) the stomach aches aren't as bad, or don't occur at all. Could it be that my body can't handle large amounts (26 or so grams) of protein at once?

It could be your body is just not yet accustomed to digesting that much protein at once. I am pretty sure you will get used to it. Or perhaps you are just not used to digested that much of one type of protein. I don't do well with casein protein, whey I can handle as long as it's not more than 2-3 scoops (40-60g) a day. I do MUCH better on just eating meat though.

Have you tried other forms of protein like a PEA or cassein? Have you tried not taking it for a day or two to see what happens? And by way there is much better preworkout supplements than NO explode in my opinion.

Im trying to finish up my last bit of NO explode, then im going to try Assault..

As for other proteins, I've tried pea protein, just dont like the taste and I dont know how well it digests.
I've tried multiple different whey proteins, as well as protein blends. Anything that has whey as the primary ingredient is upsetting. If it is just the protein Im using, could you guys recommend a higher quality whey I could take?

Also, as far as protein before bed, what should I be taking, or am I better off just having a bunch of cottage cheese?

Thanks.

I got really bad stomach aches after taking protein. Come to find out it is because its really hard for your stomach to break it down and digest it and so you get bloated and feel sick. Id recommend not taking it on an empty stomach that really helped. I also got the COMBAT by muscle pharm and it has enzymes in it to help digest easily so you can take it on an empty stomach.

Cottage cheese is acceptable because it has casein, which is a slow digesting protein, if you want you could buy some casein and use it but Cottage cheese will do the trick. Anyways I think your body just isn't used to the amount of protein from a specific source so i'd cut down on your whey shakes then gradually work up to it and combine it with some oates or another form of carbohydrate to help it digest. What protein brand are you using now? Gold Standard Whey is one of the better quality proteins with a good taste and reasonable price.

P.S.- I just bought Assault and personally wouldn't recommend it. It gives you a mild jittery feeling(which i don't like), and no pump or focus… although it does taste good and give you a sense of well being. I look for pump and focus in my pre-workout supps so Assault isn't for me. Craze has a very good reputation, and i plan on trying it next.

Btw Combat is good, but it's time released which isn't the best for pre or post workout.

The new Myofusion has probiotics in the blend.

Or you could just take some papaya enzymes with it to help your body digest it.
