Simplify the algebraic expression:

4 (2x-8) -4x+10

Is it:

1. 12x-22
2. 4x+22
3. 4x+42
4. 4x-22

Also, can you please show me the process to get the answer here.

Problem # 2 is:

Simplify the series of additions and subtractions.

-2+12-(13) + (-1)

1. 0
2. -2
3. 24
4. 22

Same help here as the first.

Thanks

first one...

4 (2x-8) -4x+10

distribute the 4 ...8x -32-4x+10
add like terms.... 4x -22

second one...

-2 + 12 = 10
10 -13= -3
-3 + -1 = -4
...Might have a typo, pretty sure the answer is -4. If you forgot the negative inside the parentheses with the 13, the answer would be 22

q1:
4 (2x-8) -4x+10
8x-32-4x+10
4x-22

q2:
i got -4 for this, so i dunno what i did wrong

Could it be that -3-1 equals -2 as the 1 is a postive number?

no because you are subtracting a postive number from a negative number(or think of it as adding two negative numbers)...so to get -2 you would need -3+1=-2

I think there must be a typo in the equation for problem 2.

Not sure why there would be parens around the 13, there would be no need for them, unless it should read: -2+12-[13 + (-1)]
...it's a stretch I know, but that ends up -2

Parenthesis are there because its being multiplied by -1, but normal notation ignores the 1

-1(13) = -(13) = -13

if the problem was -(-13) the answer would be 22

These problems are just to make you familiar with the rules of algebra.

1) Us distributive property to distribut the the 4 to the 2x, and -8
Making it 8x-32-4x+10
Then collect like terms, leaving 4x-22
2) -2+12-(13)+(-1)
You can write this like this, dont let the parenthesis fool you
-2+12-13-1
the negative in front of the (13) is implide to be -1(13), so negative 1 times 13,
leaving negative 13, as for the (-1), you can factor out the negative,
effectively changing the sign to -1
so answer is
-4
So there is an error in problem 2

Someone gave me a negative rep point on this thread, but left a comment "thanks for the help" or whatever :wtf:

That would have had to be me but I swear it was postive rep. Can a mod change that? Sorry if I hit the wrong button.
