I keep getting these damn pop-ups all the time. They're not regular web-sites, its a little window that pops up and at the top it says messenger service on it. Then below that it usually has tiny font writing that says stuff like download this, or download that, and briefly explaining it.

I thought it was from my windows messenger, but not sure. I don't ever use that crap, so I wouldn't know. Anyways, I tried to go into my control panel and the add/remove programs folder to delete windows messenger, but I couldn't find it. WTF??

Btw, I'm runnign Windows XP.

Anybody know what these are and how to stop them? I already have pop-up blocker working as well, so I'm still guessing that its a windows feature?

WTF!!?? I just got another one that said "click here to stop these pop-ups. A new internet wave called messenger service is able to annoy you with pop-ups like these. Its just a matter of time before the e-amil spammers and porn site start taking advantage of this and do this all the time, download today to stop these NOW!!"

Thats more or less what it said, I can't fvcking believe it, those guys are the spammers, WTF??!!

Have you downloaded the latest update to XP? It is supposed to have this feature turn off by default, whereas when XP first shipped, it was turned on by default.

jergo you have spyware on your comptuer, it will get the to the point of a popup every sec if you don't find it and kill it, you get one little app on your comp that makes popups, then one day a popup from that downloads another app, eventually you'll have 1000 popups per hour.

goto google and find adaware Invalid Link Removed use that...if you want to use another app search google for "spyware" or anti-spyware

adaware is a good app, run it and i know it will find stuff on your computer and remove it...hope this helps!

Damn, thanx for the help guys I wll do all of what you suggested and post back.

What a pain in the a$$, I just got this machine back from getting a trojan worm out along with some spyware they found on it too.

Sygate is a nice free firewall. Zone Alarm is the most popular, but I don't care for the intreface. They won't help stop spyware though but if you are on a cable/dsl connection and not behind a router I suggest you get one.

No, I just have dial-up, refer to my Net-Zero rant thread, LOL...

Anyways, I just downloaded that thing you gave me 2gcorey, and then ran it. It said I had 5 things, dunno what that meant. I clicked continue and it gave a list of them. Under the category "vendor" four of the five things were labeled tracking co. I'm guessing those were the spy-wares? I forget what the first thing was, but I went ahead and deleted it too. No prob though, I can always do a recorded system restore if I fvck something up..

NP, I went ahead and looked at my Admin. tools, but nothing to do with the messenger crap, dunno maybe somethings just wrong with it. Cuz when I went into my program files folder and tried to delete it, it said "this will only delete the shortcut, you must go into add/remove programs to to permanently delete it." SO, like I said, i went there but I didn't even seee it listed.

I'm going to download the latest XP now too, hey goldy, thanx bro..

yes delete anything it finds jergo. a firewall will not stop the problem you have. nor will a router. they will stop a trojan, but so will norton and if you need norton anti virus pm me, i'll tell you where to "BUY" it :) !! haha

the adaware or programs like it are the ONLY way to stop popups

also goto Invalid Link Removed and download that and use it instead of internet explorer, it has options under "tools" to stop all popups, then you can set it EASILY to allow popups on certain sites only! i refuse to use mie cause of popups! mozilla + adaware and you should ALWAYS be okay. pm me if you need help or have problems. i use to do internet security and am a geek with muscles :) haha

The shortcut and listing of messenger you are trying to delete/uninstall is part of Outlook Express. It is an instant messenger program. I'm referring to the service running in the background that allows computers to send you popup messages, which by the sounds of your original description you are receiving in addition to the spyware/adware popups.

If you can't find the services navigate to
start
right click on my computer
left click manage
left click services & applications
left click services in the right pane
right click messenger
left click properties
click stop
then choose disable from the drop down box
click OK.
