First of all I do not suggest doctors to test for this as 90% of the world has one copie of either c677t or a1298c. In a nut shell if you are hetero or homo for the 677 then you are at a potential higher risk for cardiovascular disease if one has 1298 gene mutation rate of neurological imbalance may be higher with less cardiovascular disease. Mthfr had its 15.minutes of fame. When ever any one.mentions it I just roll.my eyes "here we go again". Just because you have the mutation doed not mean you may be expressing it. One needs to look at family history as well as current symptoms to have a better understanding. If any doctor is recommending high dosage of methyl folate with out checking other gene expression does not know what they are taking about. They may be doing more damage then good not understanding the deeper biological pathways. I have been studying this for 10 years, have lectured to many medical professionals as well as now doing one on one training with them. I have the honor of doing radio shows with a good friend and colleague Dr Ben Lynch who is well respected in methylation and nutragenomics. Just becareful as practitioners are waving the methylation flag who have no clue of what they are doing, but claim to be experts in the field by taking on line course. I attended seminars and spent hours and hours with Dr lynch researching these complex metabolic pathways as well as seeing the most complex methylation cases referred by doctors. Just be careful if you go down this pathway because from clinical experience it can be a big rabbit hole. If you doctors address the foundational work they will effect the factors which are causing the gene expressions. I see it on a daily basis. Do not treat the snp address the person...this is biggest mistakes practitioners are making because they are using protocols which are recipes for disaster and push a lot of dangerous supplements to their patients. Remember less is more ...
